The Romans were prudes in public but behind closed doors anything was permitted. The rest of the ancient world was even more open minded, germanic men were supposed to resist women and stay virgin as long as possible while their women were extremely promiscuous. A Roman who loved his wife and stayed faithful to her was a target for gossip and ridicule.
If a typical ancient Roman could be time-traveled to now he'd look at the whole idea of "safe for work" images with incredulity. Even Augustus would be amused by our prudish standards.
And then you show him free, unlimited internet porn with every conceivable fetish the mind can possibly conjure. Or you show him a music video of a popular children's artist and it's all half naked men and women grinding on each other
Absolutely BARBARIC
Depends on which era it was. Cato the Older once admonished another senator for lack of public decency because he kissed his wife in public. Augustus also despised moral and sexual depravity and actively pushed laws to punish people for such behaviour. Honestly the whole uberdegeneracy of Rome stereotype seems to be mostly an invention of 70s shock dramas like Caligula and I, Claudius.
>70s shock dramas like Caligula and I, Claudius
I, Claudius isn't a shock drama (a few moments are shocking), Caligula certainly is though. But the notion of unchecked sexual immorality is something the early Christians were already saying about Rome in the first few centuries AD. Things were certainly different in a few ways >Men can have extramarital affairs no problem, women can't though >Sex slavery is normal, even little boys were desirable, particularly in the upper class >Concerns about bawdting it up are pretty much for women, your wife ought to be unspoiled, be sure your children are yours, but it isn't a religious concern for pagans
There's also embellishment of infamous and semi-legendary orgies like Caligula's palace brothel or Messalina's competition which helped create the notion. Obviously orgies were still happening, there was more freedom to do so and less moral question about doing it. Centuries before, the Greek symposia were also basically orgy parties where the hired entertainment were also prostitutes to service the guests. Augustus was an autist who wanted good Roman matrons to make lots of legitimate babies.
These are my two favourite books but I still haven't seen the series. The casting is just so different from my mental picture. How tf does a midge like Picard become head of the Praetorian guard? Am I missing out bros?
>elite combat unit
Don't make me laugh, it was a refuge from the army for the sons of the wealthy. You think the hardest man on your street would be the leader of a company of soldiers? Men chose leaders for leadership ability not for their physical stature
Sejanus is not a tough guy, he’s a puppetmaster, a schemer brought down by his overestimation of himself and his own ambition.
Stewart is also great in the role and you’ve admitted yourself you haven’t seen it so be quiet. Your opinion is worthless.
Sejanus got to where he was through nepotism and manipulation. He was the quintessential example of being in the right place at the right time. Until he wasn't useful anymore
I had serious trouble with the LOTR films on first viewing for the same reason, but it was worth biting the bullet. the only issue is that as you know what's going to happen events might not hit as hard.
Sheesh man How have you not watched this?
It is one of the best TV series ever, the entire cast is fantastic
its a bit cheap, and looks like a stage play but that is entirely fittng for the subject matter
n-no?
Julia was a fat pig so I don't know why so many dudes wanted to sleep with her anyway. Bragging rights maybe?

They weren’t prudes in public; they hates Augustus’ moral reform efforts

He'd find the hypocrisy about it a bit much.

implying you can deny the wishes of the daughter of the emperor
Emperor's daughter

Pure charisma, generous to his men, ruthlessly ambition and patient. Men don't just choose the biggest guy in the room as their leader you brainlet
The Praetorian Guard were an elite combat unit you fricking moron, my point is that picking a midget to play a tough guy is poor casting
Point
-------------
Your head
>elite combat unit
Don't make me laugh, it was a refuge from the army for the sons of the wealthy. You think the hardest man on your street would be the leader of a company of soldiers? Men chose leaders for leadership ability not for their physical stature
You do know it is very easy to make people look taller on Television don't you?
So maybe the show should have done it for the midget they hired to play Sejanus?
So why didnt they do it for the midget they cast as Sejanus?
Sejanus is not a tough guy, he’s a puppetmaster, a schemer brought down by his overestimation of himself and his own ambition.
Stewart is also great in the role and you’ve admitted yourself you haven’t seen it so be quiet. Your opinion is worthless.
I've watched scenes. Didn't like Blessed as Augustus either, come at me
gayGITVS ANONIMVS WHERE ARE MY FRICKING YOOOOOOOOUS?!
Sounds like you have shit taste. What sort of autist are you? Blessed is kino.
>B-but he's slightly too fat!
Who fricking cares
you're a homosexual in his 20's
Sejanus got to where he was through nepotism and manipulation. He was the quintessential example of being in the right place at the right time. Until he wasn't useful anymore
>Am I missing out bros?
Yes, 100%.
I had serious trouble with the LOTR films on first viewing for the same reason, but it was worth biting the bullet. the only issue is that as you know what's going to happen events might not hit as hard.

>Don't touch the figs.
MOMMY
>I marked them both down for a range ban
w-w-why?
>They were both infected with that infantile disorder known as chudism.
n-not slept with, Caeser!
Does this mean he fricked her and left, or she sucked him off?
probably, or pissed in her mouth
This was one of the best things I ever watched. I am old enough to remember when it first aired, and I have watched it again recently
It has that touch of top class theatre acting and inspiration that just isn't done these days.
>woman is evil
>next episode
>woman is evil
kino
>fair, even-handed but mostly unremarkable
>still makes historians seethe somehow
He ruined the Sejanus usurping power arc at the last moment.
That would've been kino.
Think it was all the executions and child rape
probably the second best TV character arc ever after Tony S. even after he's dead you're not left completely sure of how to feel about him.
Like watching an angel fall
Is this Biggus Dickus?
>messalina is the most perfect representation of BPD crazy bawd in television
>look the actress up
>she basically never acted again
???
I hated that b***h so much, I liked that they made the guard obviously hate her too
She was probably a stage actress, most of the cast were
She did a fair bit of TV though
So was the Herod who was friends with Claudius the same Herod who had all those babies and John the Baptist killed?
That was his father iirc
His grandfather, when he's first introduced as a kid he mentions how his grandfather is king of the israelites and executed his father.
I'm the only one.
"not slept, Caesar."
Are these pics from I, Claudius? Been meaning to see it.
