It's a messy image, symbolically. The little shelf that the rat is walking across, it has some space underneath. Like its thin, I suppose that's hell underneath. The bottom thing usually represents hell. I mean it could just be, you might fall. And it's really thin, so it's like a balancing act. The big beam in the middle. Is it supposed to separate the court house, I guess, from the big glass building in the back there? Does it matter. The rat is like walking into the courthouse. Clearly, its like, corruption, rot, in places of government. Why divide it like that? Is it maybe just, heaven on the other side? It's like, the contrast. It's separated from heaven, that worldly dome. Maybe. I don't know. It's messy. I don't know. Its a real perspective in the real world where they weren't thinking about visual story telling when they were building it, so who knows what Scorcese was going for. Probably just the rat going into the seat of government, and the rest is to just try to make the shot halfway interesting, would be my guess.
I am not sure what this is from. I would note, however, that the cross is higher, at least in perspective, than the I guess demon. And I think you would call that thing some sort of demon. The three. The trinity. It's aping the Trinity. Its winged. Unattached to the Earth. So like angels, something heavenly, but definitely evil. It is coming out of an apex, which is on fire. Ostensibly a volcano, but its like Hell has risen up, and is torching creation. The lightning bolt is from heaven, but unlikely to make the situation better? Maybe? But like, God is angry. Everything is angry. It's an angry image.
