40k is a setting built for war and endless conflict and so the optimal form of a 40k story should be mostly charters talking at each other between bouts of combat. You can add some self reflection in during the talking parts but the format is good.
Space King was fine which shows they can make something good otherwise everything else is just a variation of "What if X but violence/porn isn't that so quirky and counterculture of us?"
