I feel like Paul has become embraced in an ironic way largely because even by his first appearance, he's someone they knew the audience was gonna hate no matter what and it feels like the artists are going out of their way to draw him in the smuggest way possible in any panel where he faces the audience.
It's weirdly admirable how far his design goes to mock the audience, everything about his design from his glasses to the way he has both a soul patch and a goatee that don't connect, to the pencilling of his mustache is designed to make you want to punch him and then they gave him a really big nose just to give you this perfect punching area.
The crazy thing is that I seem to recall the script for the first issue saying something about Paul having a kind, friendly face. "We like him." Also, he now has a man bun.
