It's pretty fricking good. If it was released in the 80s we'd probably be sitting here calling it one of the greatest movies ever. My point being its greatness will eventually be recognized as time goes on.

When I saw it in theaters a nasty israeli lady would cackle violently when any semi-christian was on the screen
was she viewing it from the intended perspective?

Does it have any other perspective besides an antichristian one?

Yes it is. I’m a PTA hater and even I have to admit it is superb. It’s weird though because it is so superior to all of his other work.

Of course Punch Drunk and Inherent Vice are dog shit, The Master and Boogie are ok but way overrated, phantom and magnolia are good but not great.

same sentiment as you. I think every single one of his films are grossly self-indulgent, yet There Will Be Blood is earnestly flawless. it’s utterly lacking in the PTA ego

NTA but to even have that kind of competition in one year is crazy. '07, '08 and '09 were arguably the last great years of cinema.

I would argue 07 for sure as a definitive last great year for cinema. It's had good ones after that, but 07 would be last great. Also coincides with the advent of social media.

It insists upon itself way too much. There are no women characters and like many of his films there's no third act.

Great flick and anyone saying otherwise is getting contrarian dopamine hits, but it’s not even PTA’s best tbh

I don’t know what was going on in 2007, but for that brief period, ‘70s cinema made a triumphant return. that was the last great year for film
