Watched this just before new year and wtf is that moie, nothing happened in 2 hours. Such a shitty film, like whats the purpose of movie? It has no plot?!
20 hours of static during her 2 second journey, she has to rely on faith in people to believe her - good concept
ayys taking on the form of her father and speaking english to make the first contact more bearable, plus the fact that they are clearly benevolent - good concept
>they wanted to see what the alien looked like.
I'll never not find this funny.
They spend all this time watching this movie, but apparently didn't absorb anything, or get engrossed in what it is trying to communicate.
The movie is more about faith than aliens. >devout christian knows god is real because god has spoken to him, but atheists don't believe him >Jodie Foster knows aliens are real because they've spoken to her, but nobody believes her
It wasn't terrible, it was just written by people with zero scientific knowledge. Contact was written by an astronomer. The difference is night and day.
Deciphering a language without a primer
Language letting your break causality and see the future
You know, small stuff like that. Nevermind the aliens ships; sufficiently advanced technology appears as magic and all that.
Arrival is visually a very interesting movie; unimpressive otherwise.
i don't think the language thing was necessarily unscientific, they started with nouns. it just would have taken a really long time and obviously a movie isn't going to show all of that

>they started with nouns
how do you know? a noun is a human concept, based on human thinking. how do you know they use nouns? how do you know they would know what a noun IS?
hieroglyphics were made by humans, and they baffled experts for centuries before the rosetta stone, a primer, was discovered.
there is no reason to expect the alien language to make any sense whatsoever. all the computer shit villeneuve throws on the screen is nonsense. it's pure aesthetics. you can't really learn anything about an alien script with nothing to compare it to, because you are starting from a position of total ignorance.
there's some great sci-fi novels about bridging this gap in knowledge across species, i recommend them. even when both parties are alive and deeply invested in reaching a shared understanding, it is incredibly difficult because of the nature of language. about all you can be sure of is that their language might contain concepts.

nta but why wouldnt a species that uses writing as a way of communication not use nouns? i feel like they still HAVE to name things, and if they use writing they can do that pretty easily, and is probably why they have writing in the first place. are you telling me that if I show them a tree alongside the word tree 100 times they wouldnt grasp that? if they cant grasp that then ill have an even harder time believing that they were capable of space travel to begin with. if they dont use writing or verbal communication at all then i get it, but in arrival they do. also you still have the aliens themselves to try and help you understand what theyre writing. its not at all like the rosetta stone because you have ACTIVE speakers of the language to guide you. you start from a position of ignorance but you can still point and repeat until you or they get it, especially if they also use writing. any super intelligent being making an effort is going to understand eventually.

they could communicate via smells. and you seem to be very fluent in their language already
> Contact was written by an astronomer. The difference is night and day.
It was a good movie till the reveal, it retroactively ruined the film by making first physical contact happen in a dream world as an alien taking the form of HER FRICKING DAD.
Same way interselller tried to pitch a very scientific rational future tech sci-fi movie then coped out with the dad going into a 2001 style falling portal dream scope controlled by future humans reaching into the past via black hole gravity, so he can still in the dream like gravity well, reach back to the past and tell his little girl the formula for gravity control,
I’d rather watch a Star Wars movie about the force, if I am just going to be told in my dramatic films, actuhullly it’s just the power of love that runs the universe!
At least Starwars ran with that message instead of doing a rug pull
Just reading your stupid ass description of Interstellar makes it sound good. I’m so tired of how much hate that movie gets, it’s so frickin good and gets better every time I watch it I mean god damn. That is a good movie
Noone has THAT exact opinion it is too specific
These movies arent even alike, you read it on Cinemaphile and repeat the same thing because you are a moronic npc waste of space that should kill himself right this instance
or maybe it's actually a common opinion since the movies tread extremely similar ground on a surface level but contact manages to stick the landing due to its diverging different themes.

he comes off as a weird, troubled guy to me. the podcast gets into a weird part where he reluctantly talks about how he thinks the aliens have been watching him ever since and have intervened in his life in certain moments but i think he realises he sounds crazy at that point
>The Fourth Kind
Thought this was based on a true story with the therapy footage being real the first time I saw it, since they pulled a Blair Witch Project and marketed it that way. Spooked the shit out of me
Bros, what’s your take on all the stuff coming out of the US government whistleblowers lately?
Very peculiar timing for Congress, the DoD and the media to take a serious interest in ayys so I’m leaning towards disinfo to make the Russians and Chinese waste intelligence/military resources. They did this type of shit to eachother all the time during the Cold War
the media isn't taking an interest though.
i've got a buddy who genuinely believes aliens are here. i WANT to believe so i started following the news a few months back. seems like a whole lot of nothing like always. more people are faking stuff now because it's easier and that's about it.
i dunno bro, i guess my and your definitions of being "all over the media" differ. for the proof of alien life, i'd expect more than 1 blink-and-you-miss-it story
Google ‘new york times UFOs’ and you’ll see that they’re pumping out a ton of articles about UFOs/UAPs every year for the past 5+ years. Switch new york times out with any other big media outlet and you’ll find the exact same thing
well no shit, google literally anything and you'll find a ton of articles.

Because before when people said they saw lights and shit, there was no evidence. The military films as much shit as possible, so they have evidence of very weird "phenomena". Some of it is unexplainable without resorting to wild speculation.
There's probably something mundane at work here that we don't understand, but I'll keep an open mind.
>Epstein goes to prison >Covid starts 3 months later, Pentagon UFO video released when summer starts and Covid declines
C'mon, people. We're supposed to be conspiracy theorists on this website.

wait is this the film where they find out earth is basically a zoo or something?
The pi times hydrogen bit? I always took it to mean the frequency was determined by two of the fundamental things a technological society definitely would have had to discover.
The very end? Is it in the film, I can't remember, essentially in the book at least the aliens indicate that the universe was designed by other aliens who left their mark in transcendental numbers
So Jodie calculated pi to a ridiculous number of decimal places and finds it makes a happy picture or something, proving that aliens made pi lol
arrival is a better movie
contact was cool, until the whole plot fell apart in the last 20 min
was the terrorism angle in the original sagan script or was that added by the studio or something?
I rewatched this a few days ago and I think it still holds up. By the by, I noticed this redhead extra and really liked her. I figured I'd bring it up, seeing as this thread popped up and all. I doubt anyone knows who she is.
I really liked this one the girl in it has a hot 70s style thing going one. all around perfect mix of horror and inclusion of UFO lore the ending is wack though
how have I never heard of this movie? looked into based on your screencap and I was not expecting to see so many big names in the cast, it's actually kinda crazy
Since apparently the James Webb may have found life and they're gonna tell us later this year, you think there will be a resurgence of alien movies? They're kinda forgotten.
Whatever one had the scene with two guys getting pumped for semen side by side. I never saw it, but I saw the scene being replayed on a history/discovery channel “documentary”. My family had recorded it and I’d jerk off to replaying the clip in the basement with the TiVo. Never got the name.
What's the one with the Ayy peaking around the corner? Something about something so extraterrestrial doing something so mundane always struck me as comic and horrifying at the same time.
this is a great movie. i like jodie. just about all of her movies and this is one of my favorites. i actually feel hopeful after watching it. at this point it's all entirely speculation, so why not go with the optimistic take?
that doesn't make the new true detective any less woke trash, however.
Literally me and my dad's favorite movie to watch together. This and the directors cut of Finch Dune.
Beautiful story that filtered millions. Ending was kino.
Have it on VHS to watch with my kids when they're born. Optimism sci fi is needed.
>"I just couldn't in good conscience vote for a person who doesn't believe in God. Someone who honestly thinks the other ninety five percent of us suffer from some form of mass delusion."
Only midwits and fedora tippers on both sides hate it because it affirms that either side might be right
because technically the movie is very agnostic and making comparisons with the belief in alien lifeform to religious belief and how similar they are, right? thats what i got from it when i watched it for the first time somewhat recently during a little scifi surge.
It's PP for the "Two More Evolutions" model that Blue Beans is going ultimately take The Fake and Gayys will "rapture" more and more people who will all tell the same story. Once ttptb feel that enough people have bought into the New Religion of Green Cult Finger-Waggers From Space they do an official "arrival" OP with the singular objective of informing the public who the "correct" leaders are we should gather behind. It will be a big impressive vehicle or portal and they'll "meet with scientists" and then world leaders, by their BEHAVIOR and who they greet and whom they reject will they illustrated what is now expected of the people of Earth if dey wanna be gettin' in on this galactic utopian network of wokeism.
It'll all be smoke and mirrors and special effects, holograms, undisclosed mindfrick tech etc.
It will follow all the patterns of a religion, but specifically sell the idea of a Science-First (Institutional Consensus, Argument to Authority) Reality. So Jodie calculated pi to a ridiculous number of decimal places and finds it makes a happy picture or something, proving that aliens made pi lol
the ending of this movie is embarrassing
I'm glad Sagan died
ok to go
What the frick was this douchebags problem?
didnt you know? fundementalist white christian males extremists are the ones holding us back from contacting ayylmaos.
Seething because he thought he had locked up the role of Raiden in the second MK movie after Lambert bailed
aliens existence would be a huge threat to religions
Not to all religions
Scofield Reference Bible dimestore israelitery isn't most religions
imagine if aliens pulled up and then said they believe in God too
why?
arrival is a better movie
contact was cool, until the whole plot fell apart in the last 20 min
was the terrorism angle in the original sagan script or was that added by the studio or something?
Can't remember if it's terrorism but its in the book that the first machine breaks and there's a secret second one
ok
they should've just removed that whole part "oops it's gone... jk there's a second secret one"
I rewatched this a few days ago and I think it still holds up. By the by, I noticed this redhead extra and really liked her. I figured I'd bring it up, seeing as this thread popped up and all. I doubt anyone knows who she is.
Looks like the woman from American History X.
I really liked this one the girl in it has a hot 70s style thing going one. all around perfect mix of horror and inclusion of UFO lore the ending is wack though
For me it's Mars Attacks
how have I never heard of this movie? looked into based on your screencap and I was not expecting to see so many big names in the cast, it's actually kinda crazy
maybe youre a zoomer
based
Rewatching Will Smith movies is hard after he became a supercuck
>humans fire a nuke at the aliens
>aliens suck the explosion into a pipe and smoke it
Every time you rewatch it you find something new. Hilarious movie, I keep forgetting that Jack Black was in it too which was weird.
Since apparently the James Webb may have found life and they're gonna tell us later this year, you think there will be a resurgence of alien movies? They're kinda forgotten.
No there's also Alien, E.T. and Arrival. And Outlander. The movie, not the series.
>lists garbage like arrival
>does not list a classic like fire in the sky
Fire in the Sky isn't a classic. Not to say it's garbage but it's not that good.
Arrival isn't garbage either, and works with a different idea than Contact (how you communicate is how you think, how you experience things).
>nobody mentioned bowiekino
arrival is better
Bait or zoomer. Either way opinion disregarded
Predestiny shit. Into the trash it goes, along with Interstellar.
there weren't any ayyy's in interestellar if I'm not mistaken? just 5th dimensional space chuds
Whatever one had the scene with two guys getting pumped for semen side by side. I never saw it, but I saw the scene being replayed on a history/discovery channel “documentary”. My family had recorded it and I’d jerk off to replaying the clip in the basement with the TiVo. Never got the name.
>Evil alien masks himself as her dead dad and admits it's an attempt to manipulate her
>He's the good guy and we're supposed to trust him
Frick that
what was the one like the Blair Witch but with ayyys? I used to enjoy it as a kid
REC maybe. Or the remake with the Dexter twig.
Original name was The McPherson Tape
its not good
What's the one with the Ayy peaking around the corner? Something about something so extraterrestrial doing something so mundane always struck me as comic and horrifying at the same time.
Signs. That scene is kino. Funnier if you think of them as tourists annoyed by the locals.
Communion i think. The ayys weren't hostile in that.
The fricking 'I AM THE QUEEN OF FRANCE' dancing at the end made me laugh so fricking hard.
this is a great movie. i like jodie. just about all of her movies and this is one of my favorites. i actually feel hopeful after watching it. at this point it's all entirely speculation, so why not go with the optimistic take?
that doesn't make the new true detective any less woke trash, however.
Literally me and my dad's favorite movie to watch together. This and the directors cut of Finch Dune.
Beautiful story that filtered millions. Ending was kino.
Have it on VHS to watch with my kids when they're born. Optimism sci fi is needed.
Here's some Jeff Bridges ayy kino
director by john carpenter
Carpenter fans ignore Starman too much. Its his most beautifully shot film.
source?
Communion
much obliged
this quote made me a religious person
>"I just couldn't in good conscience vote for a person who doesn't believe in God. Someone who honestly thinks the other ninety five percent of us suffer from some form of mass delusion."
Such a person would be correct tho.
Contact is Interstellar done right
>vegans are the superior beings
Good movie. One of Walken's best.
When will the book be read by Carl himself (ai ofc)
So… He was moronic, right?
Schizophrenia is not the same as being moronic
just admit that Spielbergslop is the best ayyyshit
Contact is not only a midwit filter, but a dimwit filter. I use it as a test for personality. Great movie.
>read book
>female american president
LOOOOL
i dont understand the hate for this movie. i guess christ and atheistcucks hate the ambiguity of it
I think atheist hate it because they aren't validated
because technically the movie is very agnostic and making comparisons with the belief in alien lifeform to religious belief and how similar they are, right? thats what i got from it when i watched it for the first time somewhat recently during a little scifi surge.
>believing in aliens takes faith bruv
>also btw we did have conclusive proof the government just hid it
Only midwits and fedora tippers on both sides hate it because it affirms that either side might be right
Foster is a credible smart woman
It's PP for the "Two More Evolutions" model that Blue Beans is going ultimately take The Fake and Gayys will "rapture" more and more people who will all tell the same story. Having seen a dead loved one who tells them comforting things, but advises that we're "not ready yet" (we're not slaves to a carbon credit system of breathing tax). Once ttptb feel that enough people have bought into the New Religion of Green Cult Finger-Waggers From Space they do an official "arrival" OP with the singular objective of informing the public who the "correct" leaders are we should gather behind. They won't appear on TV or anything.
Were sin and virtue can be metered in real time (tracking SIN that you DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THAT YOU WERE COMMITTING), but this handy little device that we want to inject into your brain, goy. And Cardinal Sin Number 1 is refusing to take the SinGuard Chip.
