Therapy is just modern church for dipshits to absolve themselves of responsibility for their actions by blaming a new "devil" (mental illness) instead of taking accountability for how badly they've messed up their lives.

Therapy is completely useless for men. It's completely centered around the way women think and feel and is built specifically for them.
In fact men typically feel weaker and worse off after discussing their feelings and problems in the open, while women are the ones who typically feel better.
If you're a man and feel like therapy is something that can help you, just go to the gym or a bar. For best results first one then the other

Therapy only works for people who have some capacity for self reflection and critique. Otherwise it just becomes lying to yourself and the therapist to justify and excuse problems in your life. It also requires a therapist who can notice when you are doing this sort of thing which is very rare

If you have the capacity for self reflection you don't need to go tell your problems to a liberal arts graduate to figure them out

If you have the capacity for self reflection, you know that sometimes it's good to talk to someone and have an objective perspective to bounce ideas off of. Especially one who's earned a degree in the matters of the mind and psychology. Thinking of therapy as some cure-all where someone can listen to you whine and pity you is a failure to grasp the idea behind it.

a psychology degree won't help, unless your goal is to become compartmentalized in your perceived problems.
psychiatric drugs have a worse success rate than doing nothing at all

A friend is not objective. You will never be 100% honest with a friend or family because you're always tailoring who you are and what you say to fit an image of yourself within their minds. You care if they do or don't like you.

Pretty much. Therapy's great for clueless people who need help working through the sort of problems that are easily fixed by talking to a random person with an above-average knowledge of psychology. Otherwise you're no worse off chatting with some dude at a bar

This. It works but you need a combination of a good therapist and a client who's actually willing to process and change. The problem with a lot of therapy now is people don't want to change, they just want to go and b***h/vent once a week, and a lot of therapists become lazy and ineffective because that's all they deal with.

Partially correct, it is one of several modern churches.

When I was younger, I was staunchly anti religious, but over time I came to understand that it's not about whether a religion is correct or not, but about whether the people need this unifying influence. Overwhelmingly, the evidence seems to suggest that people do need this, and with organized religion being minimized, they seek an overarching doctrine in other, less savory sources. Religion is necessary to keep people in check, and also to keep them hopeful.

Nta but I was just like him, considered myself an anti-theist but the last 10 years I've really changed my mind completely about 2 issues. The first being religion is more bad than good. It's now just the "state" as you said for these people. It's actually funny how much it's like a religion to these "atheists"

if you're a person who wants that sure... you'll find some of those therapists. but you leave, and find one that doesn't want to put you on meds and just wants to see you get better. they exist more than the other. therapy does not equal instant meds.

yeah except in reality it pretty much does and even without the shrink gunning for that sweet pharma cut he is still a grifter telling people their shortcomings are actually signs of an illness and talking about them will make them go away.
If Psychotherapy actually did work there would be hard statistical evidence, peoples income going up after starting therapy, less divorces, less suicides etc... Never seen anything suggesting that.

when you get traumatized you carry that with you for the rest of your life and there is no "getting better", you just mature and learn to cope with it or/and use it to make you stronger, thats fricking it, venting feels good no shit but everything else is you learning to deal with it just like learning how to keep on living this exhausting fricking life on this homosexual world, talking to some homosexual dataminer isnt going to do shit and you already very likely know what it is you have to do to fix your fricking life, andrew tate is right when he says that you feel like shit because that's your body's natural way of telling you to get your shit together and you just put it off like a homosexual cause you're being a lazy douche, also mentally ill women have no cure because they lack the capacity to take accountability for their own actions and logically solve their problems so they can find closure, they are literally incapable of that, all they can do is latch on to some moid and dump their problems on him and then when they inevitably chop his dick off cause they're schizo they end up in a mental ward for life and thats it

That's part of the point for some of them though. Therapy is generally for when your social/support circle has failed, or you straight up don't have one and need to create one. People always go "but I could go talk to my friends and be fine," and yeah, you probably could because you probably don't need therapy.

It's more that therapy is for people who can't think for themselves or introspect. Brainlets need someone else to unpack everything for them, to dig into their psyche and fix problems that they're too fricking stupid to even realise, let alone understand.

Therapy is for children, and everyone is a child these days.

      >Therapy is just modern church
church still exists. so do many other forms of organized religion. many people who go to church go to therapy and vice versa. there is nothing wrong with faith, and it can often help people with their issues.
      >for dipshits to absolve themselves of responsibility for their actions
seeking help to change your behaviors and negative thought patterns is taking responsibility for ones actions. going to therapy is literally taking steps to live life more intentionally and behave more thoughtfully. if someone didn't want to take responsibility for their actions, they would probably be more likely to just ignore their own negative behaviors, or turn to recreational drugs and other distractions to forget how they're hurting themselves and other people
      >by blaming a new "devil" (mental illness) instead of taking accountability for how badly they've messed up their lives.
you're inaccurately conflating many ideas at once here. religious belief / faith is not incompatible with therapy or the contemporary study of mental illness. this is like saying people watch sports instead of going to church these days. symbolism of evil and negative emotions are also not mutually exclusive with therapy. therapy and the study of mental illness stem from scientific disciplines. if someone had brain cancer and started behaving weirdly, and then had the brain tumor removed and went back to their healthy, normal personality, you wouldn't say that they were just replacing the idea of the devil with science. i think you're trying to be a little susan sontag but you're just a moron.

Not really true, though it depends. My therapist (who I didn't pay any money for btw) taught me a bunch of stoicism and self-help shit, exercises and such. There was no real "absolution" in the sense you're describing, they just tell you to do everything you can to set things right with the people around you, accept the past, and then work on bettering yourself.

the purpose of good therapy is to help you recognize how you've fricked up your life. most people don't realize how they're fricking up. fricking up is all they know. sometimes the frick ups are due to childhood trauma (rape and shit) that they are literally not aware of, or rather: or not equipped to recognize and deal with.

      >therapy is a waste of time and money
can be. It utterly depends. A huge aspect of therapy that has always been a factor is how exploitative and commercial it is. Freud's student Jacques Lacan explores this pretty well but so did Thomas Szasz and others who rightly point out the contradiction and convenience of labeling and diagnosing people 'for their own good' (that is the good of the all-encompassing state politic).
But the more pressing issue (as most people accept that some humans are in fact insane) is the 'soft science' of talk-therapy theory which only recently has left the alienating argot behind and has become less of a money cult. Everyone always regurgitates the benefits of 'mindfulness meditation' and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and these are long studied improvements on hypnosis, active imagination, gestalt and Jungian analysis, other collections of obscure depth psychology, behaviorism, and 12 step programs/group therapy that has become distilled into something that does SEEM to work for people who don't MOSTLY need drugs.
Today, the medical prescribing power of a psychiatrist still far out shines the usefulness of their 'theories' or diagnostic checklists, and a psychologist can be occasionally useful after the medical situation is stabilized, but most if not all 'councilors' and anger management or other specialty (poorly trained) therapists especially outside of major cities are worse than useless. They are harmful and dangerous quacks not much better than homeopathy or chiropractors.
Yeah most therapists are evil con artists.

        Anonymous

I agree, it's hard to even talk about the benefit of therapists when you're talking about an older man who's actually a doctor helping someone get over violet outbursts after being in combat and others hear "therapist" and think a 25 year old woman with an associate liberal arts degree

        >active imagination, gestalt and Jungian analysis
I hate that these get lumped in with "therapy". Cant even talk to people about them cause they have either never heard of them or just dont know the difference. Jung even points out that most problems people have are never gotten over, but simply out grown.

    >People ITT think therapy could actually help anyone
This might have been true at some point historically, but therapy has become hilariously bureaucratized over the last 40 or so years in an effort to avoid liability.
Therapy today consist of a literal questionnaire followed by the therapist asking you 'how does that make you feel?' after everything you say. They're wholly reliant on the idea that simply vocalizing your neuroses will help you. This is true to a certain extent but certainly doesn't require a professional. Having a close confidant is about as affective as therapy, assuming you're not taking some SSRI.
This is what happens when you try to sterilize a field completely concerned with intimate and messy things such as the human mind. It's a field full of artists trying to engineer better paintings, if that makes sense.

People go to therapists to subdue their psychological distress under the materialist assumption that the psychological distress is the problem because pain=bad, yet non materialists understand that the psychological distress is the therapy itself. Lastly if suffering is to actually be overcome in totality one must cease identification with the mind and the body along with the removal of all attachments, which of course requires you to realize you are neither the mind nor the body, which of course requires a vigorous spiritual discipline which of course manually undertaking psychological distress is a default part of.

I was physically and mentally abused by my parents for the first 25 years of my life. When I finally realized that our family wasn't normal, my mom started actively encouraging me to kill myself. My older sister moved to fricking Denmark just to get away from them, and then legally changed her name to a combination of some of the most common Danish names to make herself unsearchable. I haven't talked to my family in ten years, and still have vivid nightmares about it every single night. I can't function normally in relationships, I have massive trust issues, and I'm so pathologically avoidant of stress that I can't get a job or a place to live. All I can do is drink and hide from the world and from my own feelings.
But I'd still rather do shit like learn every little thing about ancient Greece than go to therapy. Therapy sounds stressful, plus I'd have to go get state health care to pay for it, and that sounds stressful, too.

        Anonymous

Yep. The less I have, the less I have to lose. It helps that I'm actually a really good guitarist and singer. I make on average $30/hr as a street musician - last winter, someone gave me $600 in an envelope while I was playing, and I have friends who let me stay with them when it gets too cold out, but I don't lean on that too hard because going to people's places stresses me out, too. I'm generally well-liked in the neighborhood I'm in, but at the end of the day, I'm my own best friend and my own worst enemy, and prefer to be alone. Which kinda sucks, because a lot of people try to treat me like I'm THEIR free therapist. I've had more than one ex tell me that the only person I don't want to help is myself. I literally figured out that this one homeless woman I knew had frontal cortex damage, a missing persons report, and a family back home looking for her, and got her back in touch with her family and off the streets simply because she would follow me around and wouldn't shut the frick up - this was last month. But I'm still out here and I don't have any plans on getting out of this situation. I don't have a shitty boss or a shitty landlord or shitty roommates or a shitty girlfriend and I can just kind of disappear when I want to, to go shitpost here, and I've been shitposting here since I was 18. That's almost half my life.

Therapy is fine, but you need to use it for real things. Not just when you have a bad day. Not as a recurring weekly session with no end in sight; any good therapist will NOT want you to keep coming back, because it means they haven't actually helped you.

I think going to therapy to help get you over your friend's suicide, for example, is perfectly reasonable.

Needing to speak to your therapist because jenny is being a b***h at work again is not

      >it turns out all I needed to get out of my depression was a fricking hobby.
therapy industrial complex grifters don't want people to know this but most depression can be solved by: getting a fulfilling hobby, lots of outdoors and exercise, using less social media and stopping with the self-obsessed naval gazing where you place yourself and your feelings at the center of the universe

      >Happiness is like a butterfly, the more you chase it, the more it will elude, but if you turn your attention to other things, it will come and sit softly on your shoulder.

    >go to see a psych at the local GP
    >essentially get blacklisted because I was actually experiencing a crisis
    >literally told me to "leave a letter with the receptionists after I'm feeling better"
    >go back a few weeks later for being physically sick and spend two hours waiting to see my doctor
    >watched him walk out three different young women with tears in their eyes and pat their backs and give them hugs
I don't think psychology is a meme, but the people who become psychologists might as well be on the same tier as narcissists.

Exactly this. There are people out there legit trying to help others get over their problems and become better people. Then there are jackasses like in your example or pill pushing freaks that want to solve everything in life with a pill.
