Reapers are not there to kill intelligent life specifically just like a lawnmower isn't there to kill grass specifically just hedge the lawn so to speak.. They collect and condense it to birth a new reaper and then the cycle repeats. They're each a gestalt consciousness of their era. I forget how long it takes, but basically, they just upend the status quo every few million years or something to give other dumbshit animals a chance to evolve for the next reaper conciousness.

Not him but the blue ending is basically you falling for a ruse. You make the exact same error the illusive man falls for and ultimately die in the process of sending them away for that cycle.
They're still coming back next cycle. It's a delay tactic at best.

They literally just consumer organic life and spread from galaxy to galaxy by shooting the markers off towards planets which may have intelligent life.

The reapers just want to prevent technology from destroying the universe by preventing a species from going to far

If the ship were on a course to Earth, then the millions of miles would make it really easy to avoid any danger. Altering the ship's course even by a few inches either left, right, up, or down would cause it to miss the Earth by thousands or even millions of miles.

Like, if the game gives you booster rocket boots or whatever, just climb onto the front of it and thrust against it for a few hours.

It has pointless wokewashing and Isaac talks for some reason. A few gameplay "improvements" but why bother if it has to come at the cost of the original vision?

It has good gameplay and it really isn’t as ”woke” as most people make it out to be. That being said, it is 60$ and that’s pretty steep for a game that’s literally just a shinier DS1 with a couple new cutscenes and a new costume or two. You’re not exactly getting HG/SS or REmake 2. I say either wait until it gets on sale or just hold off on buying it for a while. However if you have spare money lying around and aren’t really using it for anything big or important, go for it I suppose.

You don't know that. The Thing could just be good at mimicking human communication without understanding what it's doing. Like letting the brain run on autopilot when it needs to disguise itself, only taking control when it wants to get up to mischief.

it's definitely intelligent anon, moreso than humies. it is perfectly capable of holding a conversation and does so dozens of times throughout the movie, if you are keeping track of who is infected. also builds an aircraft directly from memory if you needed more convincing.

What I'm saying is the Thing is actually running the Palmer.Exe subroutine when it needs to perfectly imitate Palmer's personality. That doesn't mean it has an understanding of the conversations. If The Thing knew how to communicate then it wouldn't even need to transform at any point. It could have just turned into a benevolent alien and negotiated peace, then taken over the world at its own leasure.

Nothing about The Thing suggests that it has the ability for evil. The Thing doesn't taunt its prey nor does it intentionally attempt to prolong the suffering of any of its victims. As far as we're aware it could just be an animal following the basic instructions of life: eat and reproduce.

The weirdest part and something I like about the story is that it seemed like the longer it was alive, the smarter it got. But if it was threatened or harmed, then it split into many new, hostile and stupid organisms. Like Norris was a thing for most of the movie, and he was generally pretty peaceful, even refusing to take command of the group when he could have destroyed them. It was only his human heart condition that did him in, then when his body died, it split into new creatures that attacked everyone. So I feel like the creature would just generally want to leave everyone alone, but can't help what its parts do when it gets attacked.

It's very animalistic, they just transform when they're backed into a corner.

Sure, but how does it act when it's pretending to be a person? There are multiple times during the movie where you can observe someone who has obviously been transformed, and they aren't perfectly right. They have unusual behavior and you can tell they are trying to play a part. Like I mentioned, Norris was nominated as leader, but he had already been absorbed and he knew that he couldn't play the part, so he said "sorry fellas, I'm not up to it". And Palmer did similar stuff. Then Blair did too when he asked to be released. He acted very different, which was a sign.

It has the capability to act differently when playing a human versus playing an animal or when it is immediately attacked and needs to break into multiple pieces.

Palmer was canonically a thing in this scene smoking with Childs where he acted normal. But later, he primarily acted like an antagonist, trying to stir things up and point fingers at others such as Windows. When he couldn't think what to do, he tried looking at Norris-thing for answers, and Norris-thing looked at him similarly.

                Anonymous

Are you sure Palmer is already gone here?
Btw this means Childs is infected? He tested negative, maybe because at the time of the test not enough time passed and he had a low "thing-cells count"...

                Love this movie.

                Anonymous

Yes, that scene is after the initial shadow on the wall scene with the dog entering the room, which looks like either Norris or Palmer, but was revealed to be Palmer by the film makers. I still feel like the "only a few cells needed to absorb" was wrong and just a theory, and it needed to go full bore with tentacles ripping through clothes to take over someone.

From what I gather the more mass is put together the smarter it gets, like it doesn't actually know what brain matter is for or something until it puts a whole bunch of it into one spot. The big mass at the end of the original film was a warform type that was lying dormant whilst the other smaller organisms fed it captives. The second film had an exceptionally intelligent victim in the lead science guy also.

Maybe more intelligent assimilations get tasked with individual goals or outcomes?

Like, the dogs were obviously not capable of high level infiltration, but the humanoid-forms were. Effectively the thing had to choose between lethality (with the doggos) and subterfuge (with the humies). Short term it wanted to infect everyone and take over the base, but when MacReady pulled the plug on that it basically went apeshit.

The big mass was Blair, 90% chance Nauls, 100% chance Gary, and also had dog parts because the camp had part of the Kennel-thing detaching and fleeing, and this one rejoined at the end (this is why is able to manifest a dog-like appendage).

BTW for some reason almost none noticed the Kennel thing losing a part, which flees upstairs. Maybe not even Ager in his mega autism noticed. Rewatch the scene.

the thing doesnt have the type of intelligence you're implying, all it does is lie in wait to predate biomass while 'slaveminding' other organisms so it can blend in. It's a essentially just a very complicated micro-organism and it would absolutely continue to spread until all of earth was consumed.

Also in Who Goes There? it has psychic powers and is pretty blatantly evil or at least appears so.

          dumbass redditspacer.
it had absorbed the aliens and it just dug the spaceship out as a solution to the problem it had ie being stuck in isolated from the group and without food. That is evidence it doesn't have intelligence, any of the other things could have done the spaceship plan at any time but none of them were in a situation where it was required because they still had people to eat.

Not to mention the things dont cooperate with each other or use guns or weapons or poison etc, this is even explicitly explained by mac and the blood scene as fundamental to the nature of the thing. The only apparent evidence to the contrary is the ploy with mac's garments and that's explained by it actually being a slaved human behavior or even just one of the other people like childs who were butthurt about mac taking charge and suspicious of him.

      Anonymous

No he probably wasn't, the thing probably would've preferred to be alone. Palmer was probably the first to get turned, but Norris was the first one to be infected. The thing dog licks his face in the beginning and that probably caused him to be slowly taken over resulting in his heart attack when Mac breaks it.

        Anonymous

        >The thing dog licks his face in the beginning
Maybe but I thought the assumption was that the Thing actually needs to get inside somebody and get a ton of biomass in the process. Otherwise it could just have hidden as the dog and slowly infected everyone through contact without revealing itself. I always assumed the scene where the thing-dog walks into Norris (or whoever it was) room was to show that it was about to attack and assimilate that person.

        Anonymous

If you listen to The Thing commentary, John Carpenter said the shadow you see on the wall is neither the actor that plays Norris or the actor that plays Palmer. He said he intentionally picked someone else (I believe a sound guy) that kind of looked like them both to trick the audience.

I think Nauls, Gary, and Fuchs had the most disappointing deaths. Fuchs is off screen and mysterious, seemingly killing himself? Same with Nauls being off screen and Blair is suddenly a ninja assassin able to silently take out Nauls and Gary one by one when they're supposed to be hyper vigilant and working as a team.

Fuchs got chased outside and before the thing cornered him, he immolated himself. Ending with nauls/gary was supposed to be more complicated but they had to cut it

This and The Thing are the best Lovecraftian movies to exist that aren't directly based off Lovecraft's fiction.
Re-Animator and From Beyond are probably the next best two (yes they're cheesy and not very good but who cares yeah).

The Thing isn't really lovecraftian. It's broadly like some of HPL's stories like color out of space but it's not really got the grandiosity of the "lovecraftian" genre.

contrarianism is a mental disease equal to the troony menace

The thing is.....with global warming it doesn't even matter. At some point the environment will be warm enough for the creature to thrive in our ecosystem.

He saves humanity maybe two to three hundred years

In reality the movie is about the inevitability of entropy. You can fight the chaos all you want but eventually the universe will be consumed by the very Thing that created it.

In the end, all turns to darkness and death

as are warm weather hysterics a form of death cultists

The scale of it gets pretty grim. The entire universe is a nightmare ruin of endless fighting that never stops right up until it collapses and the only hopeful note is sending information forward into a possible new universe. Humans don't even get into a position to understand it in any detail before they're almost entirely wiped out. And by that time, space has been collapsed into three dimensions and the speed of light is 300k. They can only get the vaguest idea of what the unruined universe was like by analogy and never directly experience anything close to it.

It's not an action packed quest, but the moral implication and strength of character needed to sacrifice herself was greater, I think, that solely "fighting clearly big and evil monster"

He hallucinates a necromorph as one of the crewmen from the beginning, gets wounded, snaps out of it, and then pushes it (and himself) into the engine core you get from the crashed military ship near the end of the game. He also looks completely different (like a fricking subhuman, I'm serious). You know how the RIGs make that flatline sound when the wearer dies? Well his still does despite getting atomized. It's moronic.

same, but it's also more clever to me if it was never a malicious creature in the first place, just that it couldn't trust humans, and they weren't gonna trust it. So they could have left each other alone and been fine, but it wasn't gonna happen

Without a molecular forcefield it would be quite difficult. A glass box maybe, but it would still need to be able to breathe, so there'd be an aperture somewhere for it to try and escape.

Whenever it'd been caught in the open it would just shit it's pants and piss itself.

How could you be sure it is sincere and not an imitation of conversation?
As far as i know from behind the scenes the thing wasn't the initial intelligent alien pilot, the thing just got somehow on that ship and assimilated the pilot. Thing initial form was supposed to be more like a virus or plant

        Anonymous

I enjoy the speculation that the pilot deliberately aimed the shop towards the poles whilst it struggled against the assimilation process.

I agree, but the remake is still good. But I do agree with

However if you have spare money lying around and aren’t really using it for anything big or important, go for it I suppose.

for the most part. Unless you love Dead Space, I'd wait for it to come on sale... But I do want to see them redo Dead Space 2. Or maybe I just need to replay it.
