I gave up half way on the French Dispatch and didn't even watch this one. I don't think I'll follow him again unless he's makes another stop motion animal film. I no longer enjoy the films of Wes Anderson.

Me too, except I'll judge it on its trailer. Fox was his best, Dogs was a bottom 3.

French Dispatch was really atrocious though. Asteroid looks absolutely hideous in every preview.

I know Bill Murray actually was supposed to play Steve Carells character, but I think he should have played Tom Hanks'. Better than isle of dogs.

yes. he calls up the same two dozen actors for every film and shits out a plot to give each of them 5 minutes of screen time. he tells the cinematographer to make everything symmetrical and the wardrobe/set people are probably the same for every film as well.

He has become one of the 'it' filmmakers who all the a listers want a piece of ever ever since Grand Budapest. Hanks and Johansson pushed out his more reliable regulars becausebthey want ti be in le heckin cute meme movie and I get the feeling he is starting to phone it in as a result of losing creative control.

      >as a result of losing creative control.
oh, you're going with this as the reason his schtick has gotten old?
even though its the same fricking thing in every movie? okay.

It's not the same thing, that the Anderson treatmebt is getting old because his older films are infinitely rewatchable, itnis specifically the newer films that are shifting and losing that Anderson feel.

He didn’t cast Murray due to allegations or some bullshit.

There is a video of the Asterpid City release party ahd somebody asked every single vast mwmber what their favorite Wes Anderson film was. All of the OG guys had intereating or joke takes, all of the new cast said Grand Budapest. Qes Anderson as a genre is getting overrun with Hollywood normies who did not appreciate his come up.

When you can take out Murray and insert Hanks and they still act and talk like the same stock Bill Murray Anderson character, you know it's on autopilot.
He got his Oscar now (even if it's not a feature). I hope he can calm down now.

    >the palpable sentimentality and need for retreat in Asteroid City make it seem as precious and limited as Anderson’s detractors once alleged. And yet, something genuine is expressed here. To borrow a Max Ophuls phrase, Asteroid City is superficially superficial.

It's an unwatchable slog until it gets to act 3 which is actually quite good. I hated the movie while watching it but liked it more and more in the days that followed. If I were to watch it again (though I won't for years at least) I imagine I'd appreciate the first part more.
