I just think that while they redeemed them by the end, the two extra leads just bogged things too much and took up too much space. The atmosphere, the songs, the overrall plot are kino but those two just debase the season. Ray and Frank investigating the conspiracy and it would've been as well regarded as S1. I can't overstate how much those two did damage to this season's reputation.
For me Ray is the MVP by a long way but I don't think Ani and Paul bring the show down. Enjoy both characters and I think they're well portrayed. An extra couple of episodes could have made the season better but I wouldn't get rid of any of the leads. Its already arguably the best season for me as it stands.
