I watched it yesterday. I'm still not convinced just learning a new language could give you the power to experience the future past and present all at once.
you're right. the problem is that the movie fucked up the concept. in the short story its based on, the way it works is more logical. the language simply changes the protagonists' perception of time, rather than literally allowing her to do the impossible.
i like denis but this movie was dumb. you can't expect me to believe that learning a new language unlocks humans' innate ability to see through time
when the book was written it was based upon the outdated theory that mastering a new language rewires the brain so the author wondered what would happen if a human mastered an alien language made by beings who experience reality and think in a totally different way to humans. this idea carried over to the movie.
But in the book, the character learning the language only perceives time differently, because the aliens have a different perspective on cause and effect. Its still in the realm of the reasonable. The movie changes it so that learning the new language gives her the magical ability to have premonitions of the future. The movie really cheeses it up, probably because its harder to convey the idea in movie format, and probably because the explanation in the book is kind of complicated
Great movie spoiled by a shitty attempt at making the ending more meaningful than needs be.
If they just went "here's like a nuke but better" It'd have been better. Any benevolent tech would have been better.
But no, they gotta taint one of the best depictions of aliens with a ridiculous anti scifi justification for human based touchy feely shit to justify a woman being a selfish cunt who brings a human into existence knowingly to suffer.
Miss me with that shit. Why are all writers halfwit
I mean come on sperm is forever recycling if you know you're about to conduct a future cancer patient literally just wait 10 minutes you silly xunt wtf
Yeah I remember having one huge issue with this movie and it disappointing me, but I can't recall what it was. I think it was something towards the end.

The limits of your language are the limits of your world. Also, Abbott is death mode.

the entertainment industry is geared towards vaginas so there is no way to have good movies now
The book was better.
