It was about a toxic father-son relationship. I don't think anything actually gay happens in the movie but there's a reason why homosexual bottoms call the tops "daddy".
>Nothing in The Lighthouse is about a father/son relationship.
Of course it is. That's the dynamic. It doesn't stem from relationship by blood but it's there.
What? It's quite literally about two Greek mythological characters personified against each other.
The ending shot of the movie is literally an homage to Prometheus Bound.

It's about a narcissistic father and an unrepantant son.

It is not. I'm glad you found meaning in it though.

It's there. Not saying it's the only thing but it's there. Strongly. That's the psychological dynamic there. I welcome you to tell me more about the Prometheus interpretation (I got the final shot referencing that but I took it mainly as the Pattinson character falling/failing).

tbh I get Pattinson as Prometheus less than I get Dafoe as Proteus, which is why I assume that final shot is there -- I didn't even catch anything until that shot and was like "oh this is a famous painting" (also the transition is jarring as frick)
Dafoe as Proteus makes perfect sense, he completely believes everything is up to Poseidon, that he's superstitious about everything, can "prophesize" the future, literally is "old man", and why he doesn't fold for Pattinson at all (or I'm reading into this one too much and he's just crotchety)

I took it as Dafoe being a completely narcissistic father (figure), lying and dragging down others all the time, while never taking responsibility for anything. Pattinson has commited a horrible crime he hasn't found forgiveness for. Pattinson can't confess his guilt to Dafoe because Dafoe is a snake and would only use it to hurt him. He copes via masturbation (which is something Dafoe's character tempted him into) and later alcoholism (again Dafoe's character tempting him into). Guess the light in the lighthouse represents some secret of Dafoe's, maybe something unbearably evil. Pattinson's character wants to know and when he realizes he won't get off the island and after confronting Dafoe and humiliating him he decides that is his only way out. He ends up killing Dafoe in self-defense and goes for the light which utterly burns him. The solution for how Pattinson's character could have gotten through the ordeal was prayer. Ironically Dafoe asks him whether he prays at some point where he more or less says he doesn't. He chooses masturbation, alcoholism and lastly the hidden thing in the lighthouse.

Proteus, literally "old man of the sea"
That's why Dafoe is so superstitious about the seagulls too
If I had any idea what was going on in The Lighthouse on my first watch I would consider it a banger
Northman also falls off towards the end unfortunately
I like his style and welcome a lot more of his takes on folklore
Has our boy Denis had any flops? Only seen Sicario, Enemy, BR2049, Dune, Arrival, Prisoners, but they were all bangers. Maybe not so much Dune cause of the short runtime
Nope, even his early French language stuff was all acclaimed in Canada. I'm soft on Incendies, gotta be one the bleakest films I've ever seen and I've recommended people not to watch it, but even that won a bunch of awards.
Munchausen got fricked by the studio and it's still kino
Parnassus got fricked by the lead actor dying and it's still kino
Don Quixote took 30 years to make and it's still kino
Colossus is pretty generic
Noah Baumbach
>ruins every single one of his films with unbelievably bad ADR
Sorry, this makes them unwatchable. The fact that no one has made a concerted effort to go back and fix this is absurd.

so?
The lighthouse had kino cinematography but the gay shit ruins it.
