I bought the whole series on DVD recently. I'm only a handful of episodes away from the final episode. I have enjoyed every single episode of this series, even the weaker ones are still really enjoyable.
I'm glad that when they switched from Sharona to Natalie that it didn't tank the series and that the two assistants have distinct personalities. It sucks that they had to drop the Sharona/Randy romance subplot they were clearly building to.

Except that the show doesn't depict it as a fun "quirk" and instead devotes several episodes to just how debilitating Monk's severe germaphobia is and how much he wishes he were normal.

The show pretty clearly demonstrates that monks mental illnesses have left him a miserable shell of a person who can barely function

The tune of the show is fun and quirky and this seeps into the characters. Monk seems to work around his symptoms more or less effectively, has good friends that are always there for him and a job that he loves. It's classic Hollywood bullshit

Mate have you even seen the show? His OCD is constantly impending him, people ridicule him non stop, he has no friends he has a full time carer and a couple of liaisons with the police department who half the time can't stand him, he's presented as a miserable sad person and his detective work is the only thing that gives his life any purpose

          >Monk seems to work around his symptoms more or less effectively [...] It's classic Hollywood bullshit
Or it's an accurate depiction of people with long term mental illness? I have pretty severe germaphobia, along with other mental issues after experiencing my own breakdown and I've learnt to adapt my life around dealing with them while working to overcome them. I found Monk to actually be a really relatable character. You've clearly never properly watched the show if at all.

he's in anquish for 99% of the duration of the show because of his illness

    A WORD OF WARNING
If anyone decides to read the novels, which are actually good and eventually they take place after the series is over and continues the plot in a respectful way that actually makes sense, whatever you do, do NOT, read the final novel. The final novel basically undoes EVERYTHING because it's by a new writer who hated all the development of everyone's character and wanted it to be like how it was back when Monk was airing on TV. Even things that happen in the final episode of the show are undone to make it go back, it's complete shit and can be skipped because it killed the whole line.

      Anonymous

You actually have to stop reading it when the main author changes, the old author did things like develop Monks relationship with his daughter, having him work on being less OCD like the final episode implied while still keeping the humor of the show, had him visit Randy with a whole novel set with him, even had him get a new relationship with a woman who ran a store that sold products made of shit as the ultimate frick my life for Monk. New writer got rid of all that and had Randy move back to San Francisco because they're a bastard.

Did the creators of this show want potential viewers to think it was about an actual monk?
Perhaps the title is a play on the tenacious repetitive obsession of the monk. Adrian is the absolute opposite of zen and literally requires himself to be a machine of obsessed focused repitition to be able to even have normal calmness and in that obsession he sees through things people would miss at a glance.

Status quo episodes were good, but then they made an arc with his wife and it FRICKING SUCKS.
They write themselves into a corner, the show is fundamentally so stupid jesus christ
    >Monk is this quirky dude that dreams about being a sane policeman again
    >Quirkyness started because his wife got killed
    >Quirkyness is unhealthy.
    >Resolving his wife murder ends quirkyness and allow him to become a sane policeman again
    >But this kills the quirkiness, the one thing that the show is marketed for
