I guess it's because it was an adaptation of a novel, but I still liked its dilemma around science intruding into the realm of the human psyche.
But you're right it wasn't as "deep" as his previous works, I still think it was his most creative one and definitely the culmination of his editing experimentation, it did improve upon Millennium actress on that aspect
>style over substance
brainlet take, this is a visual medium, style IS substance, especially in the case of a film that attempts to portray the subconscious.
honestly anyone who uses the term "style over substance" loses any respect I had for his opinions, don't bother replying you're not worth my time.
No need to be so dismissive just because someone doesn't share your reasoning anon, some people really do value plot over everything else
You can't control what you enjoy
>some people really do value plot over everything else
yes, those """people""" lack the media literacy required to give their opinion on visual mediums.
since when is everyone agreeing with this? i've always said this was my favorite Kon directorial work and people scoffed.
also i teared up at the Fathom screening in 2019 as some indian girl stared at me.
Paprika is the very definition of style over substance. A picture of the movie poster should be included next to the word "shallow" in all dictionaries.

Cant decide which is best between perfect blue and millenium actress … but i definitely say paprika is his worst film
Fucking this, he went full retard with that vapid movie. I'd pick Perfect Blue as my favoriteb only ecause Millenium Actress is just depressing.
I prefer Millennium actress. tokyo godfathers is probably the second worst.
It's his best movie hands down.
Correct.
why do people hate paprika?
It isnt engaging beyond the visuals, while the rest of Kon's work is.

I loved it
I would sleep with Paprika
It was good that he died when he did. He was rapidly declining as a director. He comes out almost unblemished, which is okay.
You're right, OP. It's his best film. Pic related is his best work tho.
Tokyo Godfathers is unironically his best film
to me it's 2nd to MA. but yeah it's totally underappreciated.
I know.

I only watched perfect blue, but I really liked it, kinda turned off by the artstyle in the beginning but I appreciated how it was used by the end.
Perfect Blue is entry-level pseud bait.
It's Kon's best work, alongside Tokyo Godfathers, of course it is better than Perfect Blue. Magnetic Rose also is.
I don't remember paprika. What made it bad? I think I liked it back then but never rewatched it.
Paprika is the very definition of style over substance. A picture of the movie poster should be included next to the word "shallow" in all dictionaries.
Style is the most important part of any piece of art so you're making it sound good
Its just 90 minutes of pretty colors. Thats fine and all if thats what you're looking for.
>muh substance
go read an encyclopedia. stop watching cartoons and thinking you're engaging with any topic in a meaningful way.

Paprika was better than Perfect Blue. Excited to watch this one though :3
i'm a Tokyo Godfatherschad myself
Cut the bullshit - was Setsuko Hara a dyke, or not? That's what all of this revolves around, fundamentally.
>comparing Kon films
Every single one is a masterpiece, and his death was the greatest tragedy in the industry in the last 2 decades.
not hard being better than that boring schizofest
