Well it's attached to the first one so people will be unfair to it but it's perhaps second best dinosaur movie after Jurassic Park. Better than the 20s Lost World, better than The Valley of Gwangi. If we count The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms and Gorgo it's better than those as well.

Last time I watched The Beast I noticed more script-related flaws than ever before even though I still count myself as one of the defenders of this movie because it's sometimes accused of being boring. Gorgo is cool and revolutionary maybe I shouldn't even count that just like I don't count semi-mythical Godzilla.

Its the second best Jurassic franchise movie as well. I think it got long in the tooth after leaving the island but it had some great characters and scenes. We never got anyone like Roland in the movies again which sucks.

The whole movie is awesome and giga comfy. Infintely rewatchable. The scene where the RV is dangling off the cliff is also probably the most well executed action/suspense scene spielberg ever did.

I agree super easy rewatch especially if youre having someone over and want to play something light and fun. I loved that motorcycle chase scene with the velociraptors where the music just stops and its all sound effects. Another well executed part that really makes the movie entertaining.

this, it's a cheesy movie but at least the characters were all neutral which is actually quite cool:
    >mercenaries are rough but reasonable with its bald chief having his own moral code,
    >activists mean well but bring chaos, have blood on their hands and are even partially responsible for the last act of the movie,
    >Ian Malcom is in the middle of all and only care about his survival

Jurassic Park is one of those franchises where the movies just get worse linearly. TLW was a good movie, it just wasn't as good as JP and had a few bad scenes. JP3 was a worse movie, but still had some redeeming qualities. Then comes JW, an abomination of capeshit influence, followed by FK which is even worse, and now the newest movie which is an utter disaster.

will never understand the universal hate for Fallen Kingdom. It was a perfectly okay movie. had a bunch of cool sequences like the dinos chasing them all over the upper part of the mansion. Worst part about it is that its connected to the other two.

Annoying buzzfeed writers as characters (who don't even die) and lack of memorable and cool sequences. It only has moments. I'm not overreacting to the new movies as some people there I think JW is ok and FK is just weak but watchable and didn't ruin anything.

Very annoying characters and it’s nothing like old school JP movies.

The problem with the new films is they constantly try to make the dinosaurs black and white, some are nice others are evil. Dinos were a force of nature in the og movies that pushed the narrative forward. There’s a constant sense of dread in the original film since you don’t know if the T. Rex will just pop up and attack out heros again. The dinos didn’t discriminate either l, they killed anyone, good or evil.

In the original JP, aside from Nedry, everyone that died were just normal people trying to fix the park. In TLW, Eddie has the most gruesome death despite being a really nice guy.

In the new films, aside from the babysitter, everyone that dies is an evil dick that’s trying to exploit the dinos. Good people always live.

FK could have been awesome if the nice vet girl, someone wanting to help the dinos and wanted them to live freely, suffered a brutal death like Eddie. It would perfectly show to us how wild and unpredictable dinos can be. Trevorrow doesn’t understand this because he just sees JP the way a child saw it, cool dinos.

Also Chris Pratt’s character sucks. I like the guy, he’s a nice fellow, but he can’t do serious action roles. When he’s Star lord he’s perfect, but a gruff badass like Owen Grady was not the right fit for him. The black dude from JW was more interesting than he was.

JPIII aged better after 20 years because people learned not to expect much from it and just treat it as a small, random movie about dinosaurs with pretty cool raptors. I put JW higher mostly due to the first act, later on it goes downhill and into generic modern blockbuster territory but I like the section where we see the daily life in the park. I was thinking about skipping it but I will watch Dominion this Saturday the opinions I hear are incredibly split so no one knows what person's opinion is gonna be. I've seen absolute buttholes who hate almost everything give it 7/10 there's no logic so I don't know where it's gonna land on my list.
Also the extended cut is possibly coming. For now it's only a rumor but we'll see.

        Anonymous

My main problem with JPIII is that all of the jobbers die within the first 15-20 minutes. You know they ain't killing off Grant, the parents, the kid, and who cares about Billy, so it's like what's the point in watching the rest of the movie really? I admit there's some cool parts and it's nice to see Sam Neill again, but when all of the disposables are killed off so early it just doesn't leave that much more room for excitement.

And that ending really felt anti-climatic where they just run into the army on the beach.

          Anonymous

Yeah only the designated victims die then nobody for the most of the film despite two fake outs. FK and Dominion have the same problem with killing non-antagonist named characters. I think even that cartoon has more grit in this regard.

            >FK and Dominion have the same problem with killing non-antagonist named characters.

Oh for sure. A lot Dominion especially just felt like filler... most notably Pratt in Malta with the velociraptors and Ginger Stink in the woods hiding from Giga-dino. We know they weren't going to die and it did nothing to progress the story so it just made the overall movie felt boring.

JPIII is literally just scene after scene of dinosaur appears and characters run screaming for two hours. It's complete shlock through and though and doesnt even attempt to recapture what made the previous two heightened above run of the mill shlock. That said, its pretty fun shlock and somewhat novel given that there arent that many dinosaur horror movies out there. Sometimes I'll just let it play if it's on tv or something

          Anonymous

I treat it as a tv movie with dinosaurs. It has cool raptors, a few memorable shots and that's about it. I remember I saw the trailer (probably before Toy Story 2? Or something similar) and me a kid obsessed with both movies we had at the time and even owning a cool TLw comic novelization I was totally indifferent. The movie didn't fit to be the end but now that it's not the end it can be accepted as an episodic random short film.

Terminator, Alien, Predator.... all getting worse and and worse in release order

        Anonymous

Feels forced to say it in regards to JP but people have different tier lists. At the very least I feel like JP got off easy. Weaker movie doesn't ruin a franchise but something that for example Terminator did does. I know they're planning to continue but they never said in what form. I can tolerate it if they're just barely related spin offs existing under the brand name that are just fan dinosaur movies.

          Anonymous

I think people are more forgiving towards JP because it’s hard to mess up dinosaurs. Terminator, Aliens, Predator eventually messed with the lore too much which caused the, to go downhill

            Anonymous

At least Predator is something that has no end goal in mind. It's very episodic, no one thought to build up to a final movie where they destroy the Predator planet so as long as they avoid bringing back old characters (so far the only character in more than one movie is Anna in P1 and P2). A shit movie like the last time generally doesn't rule out a successful comeback. Alien and Terminator is something requiring constant partial reboots because they keep messing up the lore and killing off characters they should've kept alive. And Terminator is not a franchise material anyway. It's a two-part story.
JP survived practically intact because it also doesn't fully rely on bringing back the same characters and they never retconned anything that would ruin the original or they never shat on the characters. The closest they came to destroying something that was previously set up was when they made Alan and Ellie and ex couple in JPIII but...

Just rewatched all of them (haven’t seen Dominion yet) and I’ve come to the conclusion that TLW is the worst one

    1) Jeff Goldbum is a horrible lead, Sam Neill missing is very obvious when you watch them back to back. Jeff just screams Reddit character
    2) Vince Vaughn should have been the lead in this, he’s a photographer, he’s a saboteur, and he has more impact on the story than Jeff. Hate how he randomly disappears from the movie when they get back
    3) gymnastics raptor. I love how dumb this scene is but it’s still really bad
    4) the plot holes, especially the one where the T-Rex ate everyone on the boat? And the San Diego part hasn’t aged well imo, he drinks water, causes a bit of chaos and he’s back

JP3 is worse but nostalgia, Sam Neill, and it’s 90 minute runtime make me like it more. JW is great, people just hate Chris Pratt for some reason. FK is two decent movies, first part is action and when they’re off the island it turns into a horror comedy

      >Sam Neill missing is very obvious when you watch them back to back.

Man, when the Lost World came out and I went and saw it in theatres, I was so disappointed Grant wasn't it. I kept holding on hope that he'd pop out at the end and save everyone's asses but nope, huge let down.

What did you think about Ronald Tembo though? I think he's one of the best characters in the entire franchise.

Have you read the original script of The Lost World? If I'm not mistaken (maybe someone here can correct me), they don't go to San Diego at all (that was Spielberg decision he fought with the execs on) but instead stay on the island and all try to escape by hang gliding with Pteranodons attacking them, similar to the scene in JP3.

                Anonymous

Yeah and it feels like for the second time in a row Spielberg made the ending better than originally planned. I prefer the part of Sorna but the ending in San Diego helper in a few ways:
                >gave the movie a more spectacular ending, because originally it ended soon after the Rex attack on the camp and the long grass
                >for something made at the last moment it had some ambitious stunts and good effects
                >in universe it made people aware of the dinosaurs
                >the ending separated the Buck from the baby and when they reunite it reinforces the family theme because we see Malcolm reunite with Sarah and even the Stegosaurus family (the ending with the Hammond speech, dinosaurs co-existing without mindlessly attacking each other and the Pteranodon has genuine movie magic on par with the first movie)

How would you rank the movies? You seem to have a lot of love for the first two

Thanks for asking. Oh man, I really don't know how to rank them other than:

Jurassic Park >>>>>>>> whatever my mood is that day between Lost World and JP3 > The old visitor center scene in Jurassic World > skip the last two films haha.

By the way, if you haven't read Crichton novel of the first one, there's a lot of differences between the film. Here's a small sample someone illustrated along with the audiobook of Nedry's slightly similar but more violent death. It's only 10 minutes but really well done, get cozy:

Same anon who asked you (I think this is the same person) to rank the movies, how’s the game? I remember being interested in it when it came out but never got around to playing it. >how’s the game?

I know a lot of people liked it but I thought it was a missed opportunity having it be a Telltale game with just one cutscene happening over the other, occasionally pressing a button or arrow key every so often. I would have loved to explore Isla Nublar as shit was going down in first person, but we never got that. Again, just my personal opinion. Interesting story though if you want a DIRECT follow up to the first film.

I haven't played the other game you mentioned but I'll check it out, thanks for the recommendation. I'll always have a soft spot for "Jurassic Park II: The Chaos Continues" for the Super Nintendo. That velociraptor stage with the music is horrifying. And that intro is really impressive for the Super Nintendo:

No problem mang. And I'm not sure. I do believe there are pages on the Jurassic Park wikia listing all of the deleted and cut moments of the first three films.

For example, I believe we were supposed to see Arnold's death in the 1st film, and photos exist of more of his body parts. If I remember correctly, they were getting ready to fly Samuel L. Jackson back to Kauai to film it but an actual hurricane completely destroyed most (if not all) of the sets, so they just scrapped it.

It's really fun to dig into those first three films and see what they cut and how the first two differ from the books.

Lost World would be the best one if it didn't have the same turgid hour of setup that the first one does. It's especially unforgivable in a sequel when the majesty of the dinos has already given way to horror, the cloning, biotech company, and theme park island has all been established, etc. etc. Get to the dino action 20 minutes in and it would rule, the cliff and tall grass setpieces are incredible.

When I read the first book I thought it was so much better than the movie on many points (I still love the frick out of the first movie).
So when I got to the second book I was naturally prepared for even more kino (in bookform). But nah.
Dodgson and his minion just driving around the island, stealing eggs, was just fricking stupid. It's one of the things the movie did so much better. I always disliked the San Diego part, but I don't know what else they could do as the ending in the book was pretty lackluster too. And Pete Postlethwaite was just pure kino. It's a shame they deleted so many of his scenes.

    how bad is dominion, really?

I maintain that Fallen Kingdom, despite a dodgy script, is underrated. Barona's direction is kino and the movie has some great sequences + kills, it's just too bad the movie continues the series' shift towards capeshit. Dominion sounds like it's the worst parts of Fallen Kingdom stretched to a 2.5 hour movie and it's barely even about the fricking dinosaurs lmao

Not enough deaths and breakneck speed is not best suited for these movies. But if that's the last one that's ok. Even that "fix" of JPIII felt suitable.

      It's supremely "okay" and forgettable.

I agree with you on FK, the director managed to salvage an absolutely horrid script and made the only JW that doesn't feel like a cheap Syfy movie, some of the shots are very memorable, like the indoraptor creeping on the girl.
Dominion is rubbish. It is that bad, really. A fast and furious movie except even dumber and exceedingly boring. Borderline unwatchable schlock.

Fallen Kingdom was such a mixed bag. The intro was kino, and most of the stuff on the island was fine, if not a little too goofy. It was mostly after they left the island and arrived at the fricking Resident Evil mansion-lab that things properly went to shit. Much like The Lost World, they should have just jettisoned the mainland stuff, and focused on the goings-on on the island. Hell, if they were locked into the plot for Dominion, they could have still done the auction via telecast from Nublar, and started shipping the dinosaurs from the island's port. Still silly, but less silly than what we got in the movie.

        the theme is fantastic

The Lost World's theme is fricking great. That said, I'm kinda glad it hasn't gotten the recognition it deserves, because the original movie's theme has been memed to death at this point. The kino theme gets to stay pure.

          >the original movie's theme has been memed to death at this point.
I'm so sick of JP1's theme song

can't remember a single tune from JP3 except the satellite phone
can't remember any tunes from JW1,JW2 or JW3
michael giacchino is definitely NOT the new john williams, which is a shame because his lost world playstation soundtrack was good, and so was MOH and COD1

Dennis Steals the Embryo chads keep winning. Still never referenced in amy of the movies. Of course the JP theme is one of the best ever (sometimes mistook for and sometimes going together with Journey to the Island) and that live version with John Williams looking so solemn and visibly moved is one of my favorites but his both soundtracks are great and the one for TLW is perhaps even better. The TLW theme, The Trek and Rescuing Sarah especially.

It's basically the Rise of Skywalker of the franchise. Such a bloated, overconvoluted, fast paced mess that tries to appease every single demographic it has no central driving conflict or characters. The dinosaurs are not even central to the plot at all and just pop up on que when the movie needs to get exciting. Also has probably the most insufferable nigress non-character ive seen in recent burgermovies.

It is to Jurassic Park what ALIENS is to ALIEN. Both kino but they set apart to do different things.

    >it's still fun
It's fun when Spielberg had fun shooting it, you can tell every time an action sequence is going on. And you can tell Spielberg didn't give a shit with the rest of the movie and just had his crew follow his instructions for the rest while he was busy working on his next projects.
