This. The IP is too valuable to sell, but licensing it out to companies who wants to make comics, makes perfect sense.
There's no reason to keep DC Comics, the profit must be miniscule, and as for 'idea factory', not only do they have near infinite amount of 'ideas' already, but they will of course have licensees sign a contract where they can use the ideas they produce for a fee.
Shueisha is in bed with Marvel right now so won't likely do that. Shueisha/Marvel apparently released a new Spider-man Manga called Spider-man Kizuna this week but I've heard nothing about it.
Do any of you actually believe this shit? DC is probably WBD's most popular brand.
The video says the opposite of what OP's saying >Explains that there is no way WB/Discovery would give up the DC characters >Only way that licensing out to other comic companies to make comics would work, is if the cost was cheap to the other comics company >Publishing could be in danger, but unlikely as he gave an example that the Halloween costumes for DC characters made back the money that it costs to run DC for a year
There, I saved you a click and now you have confirmation that OP is a fricking idiot
I more or less concur with Perch, the only issue I question is whether WB Discovery really has such unrealistic expectations when it comes to licensing out DC's publishing operations, and would be unreasonable to negotiating a price that would work for the comic industry. In another video he gave an estimate of 30 million up front for the rights, plus 50% of the profits. I don't see why they would need to insist on a price and fees comparable to what they get from industries with far more money such as toys, video games, t-shirts, etc. You think that in a situation where they no longer wish to deal with the hassle of doing things in house they'd be willing to adjust the price to match the industry they're trying to license it for.
They deserve to be sold after they had Zod abort Superman as a baby then had the Flash erase him from existence and replaced by Mexican Supergirl.
They don’t deserve Superman.
That’s exactly what happened, the execs that made that decision paid the price for it, lost their jobs and their company to discovery. And now Zaslav is canceling all their shitty ideas yay
It would a fricking bitting war I can see Sony,Amazon, the mouse and other giants just fighting over it. Batman alone is worth it not to mention the hundreds of other IPs they could farm. It’s to value they aren’t moronic enough to do it………. Then again they did just right off 95million movie and Warner enough is brain dead so idk
Robert Kirkman has wanted to buy DC for awhile; even approached them to buy the comic division and allow them to retain rights to make feature films and television shows out of DC properties.
They will be better off selling their game companies and the DC gaming license to Microsoft. Sony already has the Marvel gaming license, Microsoft will pay good money to counter that.
Selling the entire portion of DC? Unlikely. DC does have some popular IPs. Selling a portion of DC? Most likely to happen. And if they were to sell, it would probably be their less desirable and profitable IPs.
Disney would want it. They can have Batman team up with Spider-Man etc. But they ain’t paying a lot for it. Especially after they paid so much for Star Wars.
That's like having kobe beef on your plate and ordering a side of dog food.
The only DC title that even competes with Marvel's titles is Batman. That's it, that's the only title that you could compare to titles like Spider-man, X-men, Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, etc.
Superman hasn't consistently had a title in the top 50 for years, and Wonder Woman doesn't even have an on-going comic, and neither does Green Lantern.
The IPs still sell thanks to decades of conditioning readers to be only interested in capes. A big official dream Marvel and DC crossover is a guaranteed hit.
Of those titles, the only consistent top 10 seller is Spider-man, and even then, he was only back in the top 10 because Nick Spencer was teasing ending OMD. Now that Marvel has officially stated that Spidey will be in limbo forever he's going to drop out of the top 10 again.
X-men are spinning their wheels, and Thor is a yo yo character that's doing great now, but he isn't a consistent top 10 seller year over year. Iron Man has never ever been a big comic seller and he is basically treated as an easy job at Marvel because no one buys his book and no one at editorial gives a frick about him.
But really all of this is irrelevant because the comic sides of Marvel and DC both solely exist now as IP farms for the movies. You are downright moronic if you think Disney wouldn't at least have some interest in adding the fricking Justice League to their catalog of rights. I guaranfrickingtee Kevin Feige has a contingency for it and jerks himself raw over the notion of getting to add Batman to the MCU. This is also probably why Discovery Warner wouldn't sell DC, they know how valuable those IPs are.
>This is also probably why Discovery Warner wouldn't sell DC, they know how valuable those IPs are.
They're not worth shit bro. Most of their IP:s are a decade away from entering the public domain to begin with. That's not even enough time to establish these characters.
And when it comes to the costs of production, marketing, etc. DC has been a financial burden. Why do you think Warner Bros were so deep in debt before being bought out? It's because DC was a money sink and a loss because Warner thought their IP:s could capture the grandeur of the MCU.
It's time to wake up and smell the sheets. DC is never going to be as recognizable as Marvel.
And why would Disney want to invest in something inferior when they have an entire Universe of characters more popular than DC?
Warner was/is a massive company and DC was worth peanuts compared to the rest of the company. You are out of your fricking mind if you seriously think their debt was from DC.
Disney's already burnt through all the recognizable marvel main stays and has been scraping the barrel for a while. They had Captain fricking Carter as one of their major cameos in Dr Strange 2 for fricks sake.
But yeah dude, Echo, Ironheart, and Captain Carter are so much more valuable than fricking Superman and BATMAN.
>Why do you think Warner Bros were so deep in debt before being bought out?
LOL you think DC Comics has anything to do with their debt ?
WB was $53 BILLION in gross debt, which is why they had to crawl do Discovery+ and ask for them to take over the reigns. This debt was mainly accumulated by going all in on streaming, much like Netflix took on $20 billion in loans to make content.
DC Comics is not even a blip on their debt radar, on the other hand it's also worthless as it doesn't generate any profit.
Public domain doesn't mean shit, nearly every fricking Disney animated movie is based on a work in public domain, yet you mention Little Mermaid everyone thinks of the Disney version not the dozen versions you can find in the dollar dvd bin at Walmart. What really matters is the copyright which will be safe.
Would government or some shit even allow Disney purchasing DC? Marvel wouldn't allowed to get DC license in the early 1980s because of the monopoly shit by the First Comics
I'm not sure who'd make the most sense to buy DC. Microsoft maybe? Turn DC into game fodder and use the publishing portion to make comics for all their series?
Jim Shooter wrote an interesting article detailing his and Marvel's plans for publishing DC books back in '84 when WB was considering pulling out of the comics publishing business
Worth a read. Didn't happen then and i doubt it'll happen now with Marvel or Image or anyone. Now a DC that publishes 20 books a month with a dozen of them being Batbooks? That i can see happening by the end of the decade.
Harry Potter might have it beat out (well until recently).
The top 20 Warner Bros movies (domestic only and adjusted for inflation) are:
The Dark Knight: 681mil
The Dark Knight Rises: 516mil
Harry Potter and the Sorceror's stone: 514mil
Twister: 501mil
HP and the deathly hallows 2: 440mil
Matrix Reloaded: 428mil
Wonder woman: 421mil
HP Goblet of fire: 414mil
HP Chamber of secrets: 412mil
HP Order of the Phoenix: 389
Batman Forever: 387mil
American Sniper: 380mil
The Batman: 369mil
HP Half Blood Prince: 369mil
HP Prisoner of Azkaban: 368mil
BvS Dawn of justice: 350mil
The Hobbit unexpected Journey: 348mil
Suicide Squad: 344mil
HP and the Deathly Hallows 1: 343mil
Inception: 340mil
So 5 Batman movies (1 co-starring Superman), All 8 mainline harry potter movies, 2 non-batman super movies, and then 3 original property movies, 2 other movies from established series
14/20 of these movies came out over a decade ago.
Compare them to Disney
6 MCU movies in the top 20, 4 star wars movies, 2 POTC movies, 4 animated sequels, 1 animated original, 2 live action remakes, 1 live action original (Sixth Sense).
14/20 are from the last decade (7 in the last 5 years), and the barrier to get in the top 20 is 460mil, 130mil more than WB
Basically if they don't find something Harry Potter tier they are kinda fricked
Harry Potter is like top 10 of the most profitable franchises. Batman is only top 20 I believe. Somewhere around there. WB also has GOT.
I don’t see them selling off DC but I do see them attempting to poach up and coming IP to add to their shared universe to use as a way to re-popularize their DCEU by bringing in new fans.
Well, it took WB getting ~$50 billion in debt before they shut down the DC office in Burbank, and instead ushering the staff into rented space with 'hot desks'.
So chances are they will be around for another ten years, that said I'm pretty sure that the CEO burying $90 million budget movies is making the staff nervous.
No, but I wonder when will see a major comic that's been hyped up sell 0 copies, I can see that day coming. if not 0 then at least something funny like 420 copies ordered by comic book stores, that will be the day where the laughter wont end.
Having actually watched the video, which either you didn't or did but posted this anyway to troll people, Perch says it probably won't happen. They won't sell DC because Batman makes too much money, and they won't shut down the comics division and license it out because no other publisher would be willing to pay the money it would cost because due to how small the comic book industry is now they wouldn't make a profit. Not to mention DC comics doesn't cost much money to keep functioning, so it's not even worth cutting for budget reasons from Discovery's perspective.
I'd be more concerned they fricking declare it a loss as a tax write off.
It would be moronic for Discovery selling DC. I can see them shutting down their comic business and goes full licensing the DC IPs to other companies
>It would be moronic for Discovery selling DC.
Discovery hasn't meet a moronic odea it didn't love yet.
This. The IP is too valuable to sell, but licensing it out to companies who wants to make comics, makes perfect sense.

Marvel will do the same.
How much would a power girl license cost ?
And wants a decent ( not great ) artist cost salary wise ?
Sell the Superman license to Shonen Jump.
Shueisha is in bed with Marvel right now so won't likely do that. Shueisha/Marvel apparently released a new Spider-man Manga called Spider-man Kizuna this week but I've heard nothing about it.
Ok then sell it to Kodansha.
I thought Kodansha were the guys currently doing the Superman/Batman/Joker Manga right now
I guess they already have a deal worked out with DC.
I am not watching your israelitetuber.
The video says the opposite of what OP's saying

Oh no.
Not DC Comics!
Now who will turn all their straight superheroes into homosexuals and replace all the White superheroes with blacks?!!!
Boo boo. What a loss.
Is this how whites pretend too be victims? lol pathetic.
Brazilian wonderwoman is hot
We're not racist anymore. Have you heard about the Rippaverse?
Hey!!! One of those is worth saving and you know the one I’m talking about
this, who the frick cares anymore
DC has been dead for over a lifetime now
Are you saying black people don't make up 3/5ths of the American population, bigot?!
Sell them to Microsoft.
They deserve to be sold after they had Zod abort Superman as a baby then had the Flash erase him from existence and replaced by Mexican Supergirl.
They don’t deserve Superman.
I-is this real?
No it's fiction you dumbass.
That’s exactly what happened, the execs that made that decision paid the price for it, lost their jobs and their company to discovery. And now Zaslav is canceling all their shitty ideas yay
Zaslav is a walking shitty idea.
To who?
Who would buy DC comics?
Literally anyone with half a brain.
>Literally anyone with half a brain.
Says poorgay anon with no education or basic understanding of finance.
DC will never get out of Marvel's shadow. It's just the bootleg version at this point.
Batman still sells. The rest are just bonus. Plus Wonder Woman is feminism. And any hero can become successful if given the right director.
Sony. Then they can have the Spider-Man/Batman movie.
Marvel.
>Mickey Mouse's "ha-Ha!" in the distance
Robert Kirkman has wanted to buy DC for awhile; even approached them to buy the comic division and allow them to retain rights to make feature films and television shows out of DC properties.
Probably Sony
They won’t sell DC unless they can get 57 billion dollars. Because that is how much debt AT&T attached to WB before the merger.
They need DC and WB’s other IP to kill off that debt. It won’t work of course. But it will try.
They will be better off selling their game companies and the DC gaming license to Microsoft. Sony already has the Marvel gaming license, Microsoft will pay good money to counter that.
Microsoft 1st party studios aren't exactly top tier...it's probably smarter to let Sony or even Nintendo make games for DC.
And nothing of value was lost.
Selling the entire portion of DC? Unlikely. DC does have some popular IPs. Selling a portion of DC? Most likely to happen. And if they were to sell, it would probably be their less desirable and profitable IPs.
DC is such a dogshit brand that no one wants it.
Disney would want it. They can have Batman team up with Spider-Man etc. But they ain’t paying a lot for it. Especially after they paid so much for Star Wars.
Did Disney recover from buying Fox though?
Disney has Marvel, why would they want DC?

DC isn't worth shit to Disney.
Disney can make them into hits.
It can make its own properties into hit...it literally does.
DC is a failing competitor, there's no reason in wasting money to buy them out.
The IPs still sell thanks to decades of conditioning readers to be only interested in capes. A big official dream Marvel and DC crossover is a guaranteed hit.

If don't know if you've been paying attention, but the SEC and DOJ have been incredibly lax with M&A in the last decade.
The idea of the government stopping it is laughable at this point.
Besides, they can just argue that Image, Dark Horse, and manga keeps them from controlling the market.
They want to make board games with them?
Is Discovery's MAGAt owner getting DOJ subpoenaed yet?
>Will Discovery sell DC?
No. Next question please.
They literally said in their investor's conference that DC was their crown israeliteel and key to future.
@132332156
Your lazy (you) farming is obvious, you homosexual.
Naruto is 4 times as popular as Superman.
What hard hitting research and analysis.
>I don't like it therefore it's false
Pure copium
not even half as iconic though
>Muh nebulous notion of iconicism.
Who lied to you anon?
How much you wanna bet those numbers are because of the real life Ramen ingredient from which Uzumaki Naruto gets his name?
Naruto has two super successful shows, manga, films and a frickton of games.
Superman hasn't had a good movie since Superman II. No good Superman games. 1 suprr successful show and the comics are hit or miss.
Superman deserves better.
I'm not sure who'd make the most sense to buy DC. Microsoft maybe? Turn DC into game fodder and use the publishing portion to make comics for all their series?

who knew Shooter was a Omegaverse writer

Discovery wont sell DC even thou the only thing of worth they have is fricking Batman but they are most likely 100% outsourcing comics shit at best
If DC is outsourced it's just going to be centered around the movies.
good
>It's another "DC is totally dead for realsies this time" thread
I remember 3 years ago when people were posting that they would be dead in 2.

So whoever told you that was right on the money.
Worse, it's an idiot who saw the Youtube thumbnail and assumed that's what the video was about when it was the opposite of what he was thinking

They won't. They need DC as an IP farm. Otherwise, they would've sold it ages ago.
