I feel like a good GI Joe game should be a mix of both. Characters based on different firearms (Bazooka having Bazookas, Roadblock being a heavy gunner, Scarlet's bowgun, etc) mixed with melee weapon characters and brawlers like Snake Eyes, Quickkick, Shipwreck, and Lady Jaye.
Something like Captain Commando, with a variety of firearms and melee weapons your guy can pick up and use, but with character-specific weapons as well.
Yeah that'd be great. There's so much roster potential too I know people go to the standards but GI Joe has a frickload of cool characters.

Not the same character. TF Karai was a loyal elite soldier of Shredder, not an enemy of his like SR Karai is.
But this games canon to the show? As I remember all old TMNT games, while based mostly on 87 show, added a lot of other characters, who never appears in cartoon. Karai, Archie ones, even frickin Tatsu from movies show up once. So I always believe that games was separate thing.

You're only listing black guys, but there were other diversity characters like Storm Shadow, Quick Kick, and Spirit mixed in. Plus Covergirl wasn't just 1983's female character, she was a character expected to sell an expensive vehicle toy.
This was nothing new as nearly every toy line added a black or minority in later runs or brought back established ones with new gimmicks like MASK. It was rarer to get a new female character or even a female figure in the first run.
Conventional wisdom was that boys wouldn't buy female figures. Hasbro probably got spooked by 1987 being the first year that sales went down instead of up (from $49 or $52 million in 1982 to $170 million in 1986) and ended the token girl policy.
Conversely, little boys weren't noted for being racist.

With a few exceptions like Zartan or Serpentor where the character was the draw, with most GI Joe vehicles the selling point was the vehicle, not the driver or pilot packed with it. After the early years, as the cast gets bigger, a lot of the driver characters don't get much attention. As one of the few female Joes, the cartoon made more use of Cover Girl than her vehicle, making her a rare exception, but I'm not sure how much kids were buying a missile tank to get Cover Girl, or how much they were buying it because it's a missile tank.

That canceled line was going to be extensive and INSANE. Cobra-La got one figure pack and was explained in depth by the Movie. The majority of 1995 was going to be Star Brigade, including 12 alien "Manimals" from the "Lunartix Empire" and a wave of Joes plus Cobra Commander turned into meat puppets by alien chestbursters. Supposedly there was going to be a direct-to-video cartoon explaining this, packaged with "Striker the Manimal Terminator", but no preproduction work has ever surfaced.

She gains a buff to her speed and (I think) strength after landing a few hits without getting hit. That's the thunder aura thing you see. Even her animations change a little. Buff wears off if you get hit or don't hit anything for a few seconds, but it's pretty easy to get it back up.
