I hope to god it's true because it is just a massive waste of time, they are movie maker wanna-be's who ended up making a living out of podcasting about movies, they always try to make a shitty shlock movie and try to ham in some skits into their show but nobody gives a shit about what they actually are passionate about, people just wanna hear about movies like starship troopers and robocop.

they got nothing interesting to say but they are the only people doing ANYHING thats not a shat out 9 hour extended video essay (which coincidentally they also did that for star wars and started this dogshit trend)

tl;dr; mike stocklasa ruined much of youtube and movie reviews for decades

because they are great example of fall from grace. They used to be hip and interesting with so cringe its funny skits. Then space cop came out and they started a contrarian streak of loving moronic marvel tier slop and liking last jedi and rise of skywalker.
Also their xer values and attitudes are almost unbearable. They can still produce quality content, but its sparse and interlaid with bizare takes like kenobi show being good.

Because people have lost all respect for them. For me it was because of their favorable review for TFA. On top of that they were previously held in relatively high regard and acted as a friend simulator for a lot of people here, so when people lost there respect for RLM it made a much larger impression on them because of how much the channel meant to them. That leads to a lot of people feeling bitter, jaded, and maybe even betrayed by RLM, which naturally leaves to a lot of hate and anger toward them, which leads to posts like these. And then all that aside it’s also just funny to make meme posts like the OP, and RLM is a common target because everyone knows them.

Those are really bizarre picks for “most popular” aside from Harry Potter. Game of Thrones was popular before it went unfinished, with the tv show ending sucking and the author dying before finishing his books. The other three aren’t even contenders, nothing to do with their respective qualities, they’re just not up there with Star Wars or Harry Potter in popularity

        Anonymous

are you underage? 99% of the people in the world have never heard of neon genesis evangelion or game of thrones.

and journey to the west and romance of the 3 kingdoms are both literally hundreds of years old - and again stories that most people in the world have never heard of. they are pretty much only popular in one nation.

meanwhile. if you take a stormtrooper helmet and show it to any kid anywhere in the world they know what it is. if you show them darth vader. they know who that is.

even harry potter, while popular, doesnt come close to popularity or success of star wars. star wars is literally one of the top 5 most profitable/top selling franchises in the last half century. harry potter is a blip in comparison.

the force awakens bombed so hard that they had to spend millions of dollars running media campaigns that anyone who didnt like the movie was racist and sexist.

the force awakens bombed so hard that jj abrahams walked away and didnt want to do the 2nd movie and they had to bring in rian johnson - who fricked up even more.

the force awakens bombed so hard rotten tomatoes had to change their whole audience critic score algorithm.

No, that was the second one. Everyone, literally everyone, was saying that TFA was pretty okay and obviously it was okay to play it safe with such a big franchise after such a long break. It wasn't until the second one that people realized Disney wasn't playing it safe and that was literally the best they could possibly do and started to retroactively hate TFA as well.

and people were shitting on it to. the whole 'anyone who doesnt like the sequels is racist/sexist/etc' narrative started long before TLJ existed. just go to google and search news articles from the time. over half are critical of TFA - even with how much money disney dumped on critics to support it it still got a lot of negative and critical reviews. you are correct that TLJ amped it up but the disdain against the sequel trilogy was already strong long before TLJ.

No it was the first one to. It killed all hype. It was a boring memberry rehash that shit all over the OT. It set up nothing new or interesting, nobody liked the new characters, and everyone was thinking well maybe the second one will make TFA better. TLJ was the mail in the coffin, but TFA kickstarted it.

You're wrong or lying. Everyone in this thread was here for it when it happened. I don't know why you think anyone will believe your revisionism. It wasn't until the second movie when Johnson actively shit on everything from TFA that things were shit up. People fricking loved Kylo Ren and were hoping the rest of the series would focus more on him after the Han Solo reveal, for instance. People were excited to see Luke again. People loved Tr8or and were hopeful Disney would see that and make the storm troopers more of a focus, especially since they were failing to shill Phasma. TFA set up and made people hopeful for all sorts of shit, and it wasn't until the second one that people realized Disney was fricking the series and then started to retroactively hate TFA as well. Arguably, knowing that the plot threads went nowhere does make TFA worse in retrospect so some of the hate is justified, but hating on people that liked TFA immediately after it came out like literally everyone else at the time is just ridiculous to me. It's asking people to either be psychic or to 'revise' their original opinion, which are both unreasonable expectations.

                >everyone in this thread
nope. just you repeating that over and over doesnt make it true. TFA was heavily shit upon during release. just because it wasnt as shit on as the TLJ doesnt mean it wasnt shit on. go to google. search 'force awakens review' under news stories from 2015. the first pages are all either negative reviews or 'it was ok' paid reviews where they cope and try to defend it from the negative reviews. there are barely and enthusiastic/overwhelmingly positive reviews. go to google and see yourself.

                Anonymous

Nope, everyone here can tell you that the defense of TFA was that maybe they’ll make up for its shortcomings (Rey being a Mary sue, shitting on the legacy of the OT, where snoke was during the OT/PT, the new characters all being shit and pointless aside from Rey, etc) by saying maybe it will be explained in the next one. It wasn’t and was shit upon further, but the point is that TFA did not stand on its own and was relying on the other movies to make it good. It wasn’t terrible on its own, but it wasn’t good either. Compare that to fellowship or ANH which stand on their own as good movies. So yes, TFA is what started it all and got the ball rolling in killing the hype and the franchise, because it got people saying “well that was okay I guess, but maybe the next one will explain things better and make it make sense” and shit like that. You know it’s not a good movie because no one can go back and enjoy TFA because it’s not a good movie on its own, and since TLJ was shit TFA is even worse now and completely unenjoyable.

                Anonymous

The overwhelming opinion was that TFA was an overly safe "sequel remake" that would have its worth decided with where the next two movies went. Rey was divisive but only for her force powers and prowess. Kylo and Finn were very well received at that time. Hell, Finn is straight up a good character in it. Shame what happened to him after.

To say everyone was shitting on it is really disingenuous, about as much as the other guy saying "everyone totally loved it and had nothing bad to say." Ultimately though he's closer to right, there was more positive reception than negative for most people post TFA.

                >To say everyone was shitting on it is really disingenuous
i didnt say everyone. i said it bombed/failed despite disney shilling and marketing to defend it. sure some morons said they liked it but majority of actual star wars fans and randoms disliked it or shrugged/were indifferent to it at best.

the force awakens completely failed to capture the public's attention like the original trilogy or even the prequels did. the 'hype' around the sequel trilogy was entirely astroturfed by online shills, it was non existant in real life. there werent people lined up for days to see it, there werent endless conventions and events surround it, and the merchandise sold so poorly toys r'us went out of business. all fact.

just because i am arguing with someone who said 'the reception was universal approval' doesnt mean i saying the the opposite. i am saying OVERALL the reception was disdain to luke-warm 'it was ok' reviews.

see here how i offer actual proof of over 20+ negative reviews you can find if you just start 'the force awakens reviews 2015-2016" - these reviews are all within the first 2-3 pages of google results. outnumbering the positive google results.

I'm looking through the RT reviews from 2015 and they're largely quite positive. 4/5s, 8/10s and higher all over the place. Not many actually bad or even middling reviews. Most are happier than not. The only places that really had shit throwing over it were nerd collectives (read: here) upset at Rey being too strong and Finn being too black.

It was far from any kind of critical failure and the overall reception was, again, more positive than negative. It did in fact have hype around it that was not astroturfed, but simply for being a new fricking Star Wars movie with everyone wondering what Disney would push out after their huge acquisition.

                >looking through the RT reviews
do you not remember when disney threatened rotten tomatoes to completely change how the reviews and scores were calculated and how they demanded thousands of reviews be purged because they were deemed "troll" reviews?

between the disney sequels and miss marvel Hollywood freaked out and bought up imdb, rotten tomatoes, and metacritic. they are literally just advertising platforms. negative reviews arent allowed and get rejected 90% of the time.

i am pretty sure disney spent more money trying to take down/go after negative reviews than they even did on buying positive reviews(also proven).

those "review" sites have all been pozzed ever since.

No, the real honest answer is that chuds were obsessively bashing TFA before it even came out because it had women and black people while the general public loved it. And most people liked TLJ and ROS too. It's just that the hype TFA got for being the first new Star Wars in forever couldn't be maintained so the chudwhining drowned them out.

I went to see TFA with 2 of my friends from elementary school who I hadn’t seen in years cause we used to make our own Star Wars movies together and it was a big part of our friendship. Anyway, we were all looking forward to seeing it and reminiscing, and I hated the movie for the Black person, girlboss Mary sue, and for how it shit all over the OT and was just a rehash if it. I didn’t want to say anything so I was going to pretend to like it, but thankfully both of them also hated it. Point is, lots of people hated the movie, even if they weren’t racist it was a boring unoriginal rehash that shit all over the OT characters and their legacy. Only redditors and NPCs liked it.

They still bring him into the studio once a week, and pretend to record him while he gets shit faced, calls Rich a gay, and threatens to cave jacks face in with a bottle. they just dont bother editing and uploading it. Mike never watches their vids, so he doesn't notice the difference

friendly reminder the bad reviews for TFA only came out many months after the film's release when people had time to absorb it. RLM did their review literally 2 hours after watching it, so ofc it was gonna be positive after 10 years of starwars drought

Well... frick it. Jay here. No, I won’t be sticking around to reply to you creeps. I’m simply coming here to unofficially announce (if I do it on social media the fat frick will sue me) that redlettermedia is in a death spiral. This is the end boys. Mike and I are now no longer able to be around one another, it’s gotten that bad. The other day I was recording with josh and Mike stumbles in (drunk of course) rambling about his usual racist, sexist shit. Of course he tones it down on the show, and generous edits help, but the truth is that me, rich and josh have become increasingly uncomfortable around him. He straight up alienated culkin while playing some Tucker carlson garbage at Max volume on his phone, just wandering around obnoxiously while we had to sit through hours of terrible tapes (he just sits in so we can make it look like he actually watched the videos in the final edit, he watches about 5 minutes Max of each tape and gets us to give him talking points before shooting). This time he, slurring his words, asked if we were watching more “pretentious f*ggot shit”. Josh kept quiet and just grimaced but I got heated with him. Shit from the past came up. He lost his cool again. A camera is now broken. Needless to say court proceedings are booked over rights to the company and equipment. You won’t hear from me again. Sorry it ended like this

FYI, he spends the patreon money on trips to thailand alone and thinks we don’t know
