Theatres are hurting, if I can wait a couple months for a film I will, they're too expensive, potentially unpleasant, and rarely is there kino worth watching on big screen. The only reason to go is if it's worth it, or avoiding it being spoiled.

Its true though. Due to a combination of the economy and changing interests (people prefer streaming, social media, and gaming over movies) theater revenue is on the decline unless a release is a big event movie like dune 2. And even those movies have lacking returns compared to the pre pandemic years

Why does RLM make Cinemaphile seethe so much?

      Anonymous

      Cinemaphile is "social media," now.
RLM is "old men," now (not early Internet meme Mr. Plinkett funny).
And young people HATE old people.

It's actually one of the things that I found hysterical about Mike's #4, but most endorsed, suggestion to "solve theater death,"
      >There's lots of good movies still coming out, right!?
      >So, what theaters should do is,
      >monopolize theaters nationwide into showing ONLY specific films
      >for very short runs!
      >The kind you'd see at indie festivals and that I recommend!!
      >THAT WAY, kids on their social media will praise those theaters' choice picks and positively spread the idea to all their friends to go see it!
      >"Gotta see it now, or you miss out!!"
FRICK NO, Mike. That would NOT happen. I know he's claiming he's being "optimistic" about his viewpoint to never let his memories of cinema events go away, but holy shit are you being ignorant about what modern audiences use social media and their home televisions/phones for.

      Like, wow.

        >"Monopolizing what theaters show is the BEST WAY to recover good film-making."
No, Mike. Audiences are not going to positively receive the idea that movie theaters will only show specific films, and only managers get to choose. That will not help profits or increase movie production or theater experience quality.

        Anonymous

Unironically, what would "save" theaters are well written, successful big blockbuster Marvel movies.

It fits all the criteria of being a social event that nobody wants to miss and appeals to a wide audience, while guaranteeing that people watch the next one because they don't want to be out of the loop.
Hilariously, Mike and contrarians on Cinemaphile would hate it, but that would have a better chance of actually reviving theaters.

You want revenue? You go mass appeal, you want blockbusters. Not Mike's delusional ideas of film festival trash.

They'd have to basically throw out a bunch of their newer shit characters that have failed and rebuild with some other newer characters played by white hunks next to some of the older cast that haven't dropped off. Something like Thor, Ant-guy, Guardians, Spider-man, Winter Soldier, and minimize the black characters while bringing in i don't know Wolverine, some new white actress to play something, and a new Black Panther played by Gosling should do the trick. And honestly, Marvel should just spit out only Avengers stuff and skip the shitty solo attempts except for Spider-man for a while. Anything less than this will just yield more and more box office bombs.

        Remakes are NOT sequels. See

        >Mike lumps reboots/remakes in with sequels/prequels and existing IPs
Is he fricking moronic? Nobody would have cared if they made Spider-Man 4 and 5. Instead they rebooted Spider-Man back to highschool...then they rebooted him back to high school again.

I saw the 2018 Halloween film in theaters. Why? Because it wasn't a reboot. It was a SEQUEL to the first film (that negated all the films that came after). I didn't see the Rob Zombie Halloween movie in theaters because it was a straight remake/reboot.
I love A Nightmare on Elm Street and all of it's sequels. I hated the 2009 remake because it was just the Nancy origin story again.

There is a really big difference between contemporary movie franchises getting sequels and legacy franchises getting sequels and reboots after 30+ years because Hollywood actively refuses to produce anything original because it's risk-adverse and answers to private equity vampires. Modern Hollywood deliberately raised a generation of people who don't go to the theaters to watch the most beloved films of our time. It's been 40 years and we're still talking about Back to the Future because no Hollywood movie today even comes close to it, because they don't fricking attempt to make an equivalent great film.

Greeks didn’t like public mourning and honestly it was a culture of repression. That’s why you had people acting like lunatics during tragedies because that was the weird way they internalised and came to grips with their emotions, they literally had a tax so that everyone could be bought a place to go see them. It was extremely uncivilised to cry in public in greece for example, which is why when emotion came it was so extreme (ripping clothes off, clawing at yourself was common). People for some reason still inhabit this mind body dualism- your body is you in many significant respects. If you don’t even have control over the bones that bore you since infanthood what really was your mind and free will worth? It’s a symbolic thing but an important one, your corpse belongs to you, it is you, even if there’s a soul that is still the case

I’ve thought about this a lot lately, actually, and my conclusion is that I see no purpose in being buried in a public graveyard unless you live in a pretty small town. Really, it’s ended up being an extension of my musings on how huge of a mistake the size of our cities is. I’d rather be cremated and spread or kept by my loved ones that buried amongst acres and acres of dead.
But if you live in a small town? Or, if you have family land, which I think is the best option? Yeah, throw me in the ground. And no expensive coffin or even treated wood. Make sure the worms can get me and something beautiful can grow there.

This is hard for people to imagine who have lived their whole lives within the movie eras, but there's nothing that says the kinoplex or feature length flicks have to be an institution forever. All forms of media in the past had their time and eventually faded into obscurity. Movies still have some life on them in asian markets where everything still has novelty, but that too will eventually fade. And movies could have lasted longer if they didn't make them aggressively brown, gay, and slop, but there was always an end coming for the moving picture as a major industry.

I wonder if people think the same about aquariums.
        Did fish not count?

Also, as a man who lives near the Henry Doorly Zoo (Lied jungle rainforest, nocturnal exhibit, Desert Dome, free flight aviary, insect pavillion, safari, Scott aquarium, IT HAS AN IMAX for crying out loud!) that is costs LESS than $20 for entrance to the ENTIRE park for the ENTIRE day and it is absolutely phenomenal. It's legitimately ranked as the #1, BEST zoo in the world. It's the best zoo on planet Earth, and you can't even see it all in one or two days. And it's worth it. Super worth it.
Like, if you live in America, I am right now shilling and promoting and advertising in this post that visiting Omaha, Nebraska to see the Henry Doorly Zoo is a completely positive holiday weekend trip.
Zoos are terrific, in my opinion, Mike. You idiot.

In my honest opinion I don't just think that movie theaters are dying, I think the whole medium of cinema is dying. Young people don't care much for movies. Cinema is becoming more of a niche thing save for the big blockbuster events like Barbie and Avatar. Everyone is on TikTok and Instagram. I think people on this board underestimate how insanely fricking popular short-format videos are.

Nobody goes to the theater anymore, moron. I've been to 6 movies in the past half year and the only time there were more than 5 people in the theater was for Godzilla -1 opening night and even then it was like 15. For half of those movies, I was the only one in the theater.

I remember going to see Shin Godzilla on a limited run when it first came out. 2 nights only, so I bought my tickets in advance and saw it with one family member. Night 1 was the English dub, so I skipped that and chose night 2 which was original Japanese language and subtitles. When we got there the theater was surprisingly packed. Living in Southwest US, there were a lot of cholos and shitty looking people in the crowd and I was already rolling my eyes. For the entire runtime, I was shocked because everyone was intently watching. No phones, no conversations, no kids, no shouting, screaming, or clapping, everyone was keeping up with the subtitles and got all of the humor. It was one of the best packed theater experiences I'd ever had. Always felt like I may have missed out on something since I skipped Minus One, but maybe not.

AI is a completely utilitarian tool and everyone knows it. That's all it'll be used for. It has no artistic potential in terms of producing an entire work of art on its own. It's passable for your usual Hollywood slop with brainless writing but for more impactful movies with real technique and thought, even old action films like Indiana Jones, it won't be able to compete. It isn't the same and no one wants that. They want AI porn and fake dark fantasy visuals.

The reason is obvious, movies are worse yet prices keep going up for both theaters to show movies and for moviegoers to see
Even if movies are good, the current prices make it hard to justify, nevermind the current slop that comes out
But prices won't go down until budgets do and ~~*Hollywood accounting*~~ will keep that from happening
It will only get worse as prices will go up even higher to account for less moviegoers (with hikes being blamed on rampant piracy rather than bloated budgets and Hollywood greed)
People use that Gabe Newell quote about piracy being a service problem all the time but i disagree, piracy is a value problem
Like other anons have said, $4 movie theatres seem to do well even though they're just showing old classics

People are spending more money than ever on movies I'd bet it's not even close.
There's nothing that theaters can do that will make people cancel their subscriptions and go back to buying tickets. The market has moved on to a different product. Expecting them to do both, pay for subscriptions AND movie tickets is insanity.

You're a fricking moron. People paid for cable for 30 years and the box office kept breaking records. Oppenheimer and Top Gun Maverick proved there is still a market for movies. Stop making woke shit and the people will come back.

No. No they won't. Anomalies exist. Theaters need movies all around to make more money. One or two making a billion is nice but it's a bandaid to a gaping wound.

moron. The movies that weren't named Oppenheimer and Top Gun were all woke shit or reboots. Stop with the woke shit. Stop with the reboots. And yes, people will show up again.

OK, RedLetterMedia, here's how capitalism works in the most basic of basic ways:
    >supply
    >demand
    Too many theaters?
    Not enough demand?
You close as many theaters as needed to match demand.

    THAT'S HOW.
Costs will solve themselves, and quality will only improve.

Make going to the movies feel like more of an exclusive event. movie theaters should double as a merchandise hub.
instead of allowing funko pop shops / hot topic to eat up their pontential profit.
coordinate with studios to add at minimum 2-3 month hold for films to be released to streaming
    its a gamble but needed

Unironically they should dedicate a theater in a multiplex where you are openly allowed to use your phone (without volume).

I think the future of theaters is private theaters. Where they only sell membership to whites. They would RAKE in the cash

whites already get screeners from studios that they watch in their own private theaters
