Zoomers slice of the pie that is the American dream is laughably thin. I was at least under the delusion that I'd eventually own a house when I plugged my youth into the matrix.
Doesn't mean the market can't give you a house, just that you have to use your own wits first and foremost. Can't trust the israelites economic guidance like the boomers did.
Where is opportunity? What are your talents anyway? That takes a while to figure out and you'll run face first into a few walls on the way.

A character can only be as smart as their author, so not a lot on this case.

Most of them aren't that smart actually. I don't know about today, but 10 years ago your standard psychiatrist didn't know what a narcissist was or what PTSD looked like.
In my experience, most things were misdiagnosed as ADHD. Like brain fog can also be a symptom of trauma.

It's all kind of a farce. An illusion that keeps liberal progressivism chugging along.
            >Something's wrong with you? You need magical SCIENCE MIND MAN to fix you
            >The community can't help you, Church can't help you, your friends can't help you
            >Only magical SCIENCE MIND MAN can help you

Granted I did have serious problems and several qualified professionals did help me via YouTube. But I had to use my brain and choose which advice I wanted to follow. I had to do my own research and exercise discretion.
It's this lazy, hopeless, mind-numbing liberal compulsion to look to magical SCIENCE MIND MAN and NOTHING ELSE that gets me.

            Same thing, isn't it?

          Everyone's on meds nowadays.
And I don't think there's a single long-term study (as in over a decade) on any of them.
Psychology is a handy toolkit, but its history is pretty dark. It's not always wielded to help people first and foremost.

Therapists/Psychologists are often used to magically read other character's minds because stupid writers think that smart people are wizards. From a few conversations, or even just a look at how you stand, they're able to know your entire history, your family history, how you were molested and so on and so forth.

It's an incredibly lazy writing trope.

This is the real reason. Wong's an extremely eggregious example whose entire role basically boils down to "we don't trust the audience to read between the lines properly so we'll have her explain."
Even after her initial appearance, she does this in the Unity comeback episode.

In my experience, this type of person is dangerous. Personally, when my family forced me to speak to such a psychiatrist, I knew she was hired to look for signs of delusions so my narcissistic mother could lock me up.
Which would be hard, because I was holding down a job the entire time.
She ended up giving me a lot of tests and not telling me shit about the results. Huge waste of time. She was not in my corner.
There are plenty of "professionals" willing to throw their "expertise" behind abusive, dysfunctional families for a paycheck.

I was sexually harassed by the middle-aged cow at another psychiatrist's office I was dragged to by my mother.

Helga is young. Even a very gifted kid shouldn't be too threatening.

Psychiatrists are EXTREMELY dangerous and will intentionally give children brain damage with hardcore psych drugs because they stepped out of line against their homeschool parents. Psychiatry should be abolished. I was very lucky to escape my childhood with my intelligence presumably mostly intact, although the lithium tried its damndest to make sure that didn’t happen. Always remember to make a shrink’s day worse.

It's an industry where the person who is often the abuser is also the one writing the checks.

It’s not even about profit. It’s pure cruelty. Most psych staff are child abusers. Most shrinks either do it because of a check or because of a hidden desire to abuse what they see as moronic children, but people with 6-year degrees don’t stick around a profession because they’re getting paid 200 dollars per session.

Most of them were ready to say you were depressed and needed to touch grass. Advice I get for free every day, even back then. Frankly I was fricking shocked when I heard it.

I'm not going to debase the entire profession because there's a good community on YouTube who have really helped me out. But many will work with narcissists to grind their children into complete subservience.

              Anonymous

I've been to more therapists, psychiatrists, and psychologists than I can even remember by this point in my life. In my experience, the majority of them aren't malicious, just dangerously ignorant.
I think a lot of them aren't bothering to stay up-to-date on recent developments and discoveries, and are stuck with outdated knowledge as a result.
And when it comes to the ones who deal with children, the biggest problem is that they most often disregard the child's input on their life in favor of what their parents are saying, which in the worst of situations can lead to actively enabling abusive parents, but even in the best situations all it does is hurt the child. Another large issue is that many have a hard time putting themselves in the shoes of their patients, which does make some sense because people with certain conditions have brains that just work differently- they think differently and they process and interpret things differently, and it's in a manner that their doctors just can't wrap their brains around.

                Anonymous

But seriously, too many doctors who work with children ignore what their patients are telling them because "they're just kids, they don't understand." Which is a REALLY stupid attitude to have if you are in a career where you work with children.

This is why counselors are better, I went to one during middle school and it was just mental games and exercises with dialogue.
Had to confess of my impulsive lying but attending someplace with someone to give you the mindset to walk past the hard moments in a day beats $200/hr + prescription.
She believed therapy today was too validating and there needed to be an outside party to condemn or place a strict standard on their patient which prescription cannot do.
She introduced me into affirmation and how we can self-induce a placebo effect over the span of years with consistent mental dedication.

When I was really young, my parents were looking for a psychologist/psychiatrist for me, and we sat with a lot of them as a type of introduction to our family dynamic.

One of them said I sounded fine, it was my parents who sounded like the problem.

I have a hard time reading discussions about psychiatrists these days. Every time I read people talking about them here, I get dizzy and my head goes kinda numb. Just thinking how 12 years of medication and absolute shrink pseudoscience delusion could have affected me. I consider suicide every day even though I’ve scarcely experienced one sign of med toxicity throughout my entire life outside the psych wards. It completely ruined my life. I hope every psychiatrist in the country gets fricking lynched, loudly, in public.
