So its... horror where you've afraid of being electrocuted by something standing over yonder?

Too short form to be actually “scary”, mostly just unsettling, and the longer form ones fall apart because they lack mystery. I generally like the aesthetic, but that’s all it has going for it for now

This one was entertaining. It was a good mix of legimately scary and funny, but then the ghost of girlfriend didn't match the tone. If it's irreverent, odd, and scary, bits of "I felt a warm light wash over me, even as I just sat there playing" gets my eyes rolling.

I think it works more on a case by case basis.
Like, for instance, Warren Files, that would be Cinemaphile because it's mostly based on cartoon stuff
Angel Hare would also count as Cinemaphile
But something like, say, Local 58 would not be
White Stag Education would also not be except for the single episode with puppets since apparently puppets are counted as honorary Cinemaphile, but even I would agree that would be stretching to make it fit on Cinemaphile
DVD Menus aren't Cinemaphile, but those old DVD games that would come on DVDs along with your movie would count as Cinemaphile

That's not what I was asking.

analog horror is a term used to refer to a fork of the found footage subgenre that is more epistolary in nature. these stories employ various standards of information dissemination to mask the horror in plain sight: wilderness safety guides talking about creatures from another planet as if they're commonplace (gemini home entertainment); workplace instructional tapes with ghost in the machine messages from the victims of a serial killer (fnaf vhs); old recordings from public access that show an entire tableaux of seemingly unrelated phenomena (local 58).
the subgenre has come under some criticism recently due to the sudden and inscrutable popularity of several low effort series, such as The Mandela Catalogue, The Smile Tapes, and UrbanSpook. it is as a result of these slapshod series and other like them that so many people (like the autist who keeps getting his posts deleted) believe the ENTIRE subgenre is more of the same.
If you need a single video to convince you whether or not Analog Horror is something you'd be interested in, I'd recommend Local58's third upload, "Weather Service"

I'm asking why that matters for the definition. Because it doesn't seem too integral to me.

                Anonymous

go back and reread the longer post I made and you'll see how it IS integral. if you try to make this same kind of story without the framing device of an old VHS tape then it's not analog horror because it isn't ANALOG.
compare this against other internet horror series like alex bale's "don't feed the muse", adam butcher's "internet story", or catghost.

                Anonymous

I did read it, and while your examples were all using analog media, the initial explanation didn't indicate it was mandatory. You could still do a story with pretty much the same format as a VHS one but with a DVD, I would think. And according to what you (or whoever posted it) said in

                >So why is it called that?
because vhs tapes are Analog video recordings, whereas recent video formats such as DVDs are Digital.
                >And what was [guy] going on about?
guy is a spastic and should be ignored.

that would be an example of digital media. I don't understand how simply changing it from a tape to another recording that isn't online makes it not count for any reason other than technically not being an example just because it's not literally analog.

                Anonymous

both those posts are by me.
it's a superficial distinction, but a distinction nonetheless. think about how splatter & slasher films are both just about killing people with the details slightly tweaked, but people will still refer to them by their proper appellations. the difference between Marble Hornets and Alantutorial is the same as that between Texas Chainsaw Massacre and House of a Thousand Corpses, and if you don't understand THAT then you'll never understand it.

                Anonymous

My understanding is that a slasher is with a (more or less) human killer picking off victims as the movie goes while they try to hide, escape, fight back, or do stupid shit because they're either idiots or unaware of the killer, it's got a sort of formula or structure. And splatter is more about the gore, but doesn't need to have one killer going around chasing/finding people to kill. Like Cannibal Holocaust, that's considered splatter, but I don't think anyone would call it a slasher. I don't think the nature of what medium the facts are found on are a big enough difference if it's otherwise executed the same way.
Also, I don't know what the first two things you were talking about at the end there are.

                Anonymous

The distinction is mainly aesthetic. Analog horror usually tries to emulate the visuals of VHS tapes and their UI. If it tried to emulate DVD menus and shit it would be digital horror. It might seem shallow but the term wasn't exactly coined by science professors.

      >Does anyone know what the frick happened to the Walten Files?
I think a mix of perfectionism and technical issues pushed back the release of the next full episodes. That's what happened with the previous full episode BunnyFarm anyway.
Originally it was much shorter and featured a scene with Brian Stells from the first episode but after his computer was corrupted and he forgot to back up the files he had to start from scratch and decided to rework the whole thing.
Even when he did put out a release date for TWF4 it ended up being pushed back several times (with him finally finishing the episode on a previously-stated release date)

Oh also TWF4 went from a single almost two hour long episode to getting split into three episodes (30 minutes, 20 minutes, and 40 minutes respectively) released throughout February to finally cap off Season 1.

He's a guy who does horror comics in this faux-1930's cartoon style. He made some real classics back in the 90's ("The Trumpets They Play!", "I Was Killing When Killing Wasn't Cool", "The Biologic Show") but he's been notoriously inactive since then - his only standalone releases since were "Pim & Francie: The Golden Bear Days" in 2009 (basically a series of disconnected vignettes starring two creepy kids) and Amnesia 1 in 2018 (a compilation of various disturbing fake-movie posters by this fake cartoonist from the 1930's)
If you want an example of his work, check out "The Trumpets They Play!" below, although you should know it has a far happier ending than most of his stuff

while we're on the subject of analog horror, Amnesia 1 and 2 are somewhat similar to it in that it also plays upon the whole "spooky lost media thing". I hate how people like you will say shit like “it’s all shock no substance” as if that’s a substantial critique and not, like, a matter of opinion. Some people actually like shock and think that things like drawings, gore, and special effects are cool in of themselves. Ever hear of this thing called “rock music” and “metal”?

But let’s be real, the claim that the series lacks substance just isn’t true. It’s very much like the Poughkeepsie Tapes - a series about a hyper-predator like Hannibal Lecter that can only exist in narrative. The interesting part is trying to figure out just how superhuman the bad guy is. Is he a monster? Or just a dude on too many drugs? Does he have connections with the cops? Much like the Poughkeepsie Tapes, there is a pretty obvious anti-cop theme. But that’s the thing, this series has been dogpiled on by a bunch of midwits who think everything must have some commentary on capitalism or whatever the frick. Considering killing yourself.

Oh, you mean the fact that people die in every single instalment? Yeah. That tends to happen in horror series. There isn’t a Friday the 13th movie that lacks any and all murder. That doesn’t mean all the sequels are the same.

          >”Creepy” pictures
Talk shit all you want, but the guy can create some brilliant works of art. “Floating Jackie” and the subsequent “photo” made me gasp because it did look like a real drowned corpse I saw, once. If it’s so “””creepy”””, why don’t you give me a single example of an artist you do find creepy? I mean, it’s not like you lack any and all understanding of horror as a genre, right?

But, okay, whatever, let’s dig in and be belligerent about this. You know what Freddy Got Fingered had between it? Live action sequences. You know what The Painter (and basically all analog horror) lacks? Live action. Marble Hornets is the only thing that comes to mind. So if there’s no live action sequences, how can it be live action? The first episode looked promising, but when I came back the episode had changed? People said it was censored.

Is Freddy Got Fingered Cinemaphile solely for the Zebras in America scene?
Is Supernatural in its entirety Cinemaphile just for the one Scooby Doo crossover?

Dude, if you’re asking me “are there better places for this series to be discussed”, uh, yeah, obviously. I think anything horror should be in /x/. But I didn’t start the thread, did I? I came here to talk mainstream Cinemaphile stuff, saw the OP and checked it out.

If it was never released in theatres or on television, how can it be Cinemaphile? Analog horror is probably better suited for /x/, but it’s also very clearly an example of a cartoon. Basically,

It's Cinemaphile because literal Looney Tunes and Disney characters are in it heavily

don't bother arguing. just report and ignore.

    Why report? That’s lame.

Again, if my tastes are so obviously cringe and bad and stupid and lame, please give me a single example of horror media you considered good.

      >affects you this profoundly
Are you moronic? Or just ESL? “I gasped when I saw a drawing” is a “profound” response to you? Really?

      [...]
I’ve seen actual bodies IRL, I’m older than you, and I remember the Wild West days of the Internet. It’s really easy to act hard when you’re just attacking. If my tastes are really that dumb and adolescent, please, name a single horror anything that you like. Enthral me with your acumen, homosexual.

You sound like a massive b***h if you audibly gasp at any horror video, especially something this utterly pedestrian. If you want a recommendation I recommend you be less of a b***h.

      >what are jump scares
Nah, I’m not the b***h. You’re the b***h. You’re too scared to name a single thing you like because you’re scared of being criticized, and you can only insult me with information I volunteered specifically because I’m not insecure. So keep coping and acting tough, maybe it will impress the other kids at your high school. Consider suicide.

Yes, actually, you do have to provide an example because you’re criticizing me without giving me a metric. And why so apprehensive? I’d be happy to list some of my favourite horror media, if you like. I’m not ashamed of my interests like you seem to be.

It doesn’t matter who is calling you a broke homie, if you’re broke, you’re broke.

I feel like the whole series is just a excuse to show his art

Exactly. The guy literally said that he wanted to manufacture a way to sell his art and he succeeded. The only snag was that it made the selling of some merchandise inappropriate post-hoc (the whole “frick-toy Cory” thing). I think the guy could even spec into industrial music. It’s better than most of the stuff that rips off Whitehouse or whatever. I’m following this guy specifically because of how much he has improved and expanded his craft over such a short, improvised series. I think whatever he puts out next will have a lot more thought and precision, and a more consistent style. I’m hype.

      Here, i'll explain some shit.
      >The perenium is basically your taint. How the frick can someone get stabbed that many times there and how would you even tell?
      >Candles have different drying periods depending on what type it is. To make a big fricking monolith of a wax coffin, you'd need a frickton of the same candle.
      >How does one survive their face being fricking ripped off.
      >Sildenafil does not work that way on horses. In fact it's banned in racing because it can boost performance.
      >The police are brain-dead moronic in this series. They clearly hear a woman get her skull drilled and they just don't...react to that.
      >Why do they get stabbed so many fricking times? And why the woundfricking?
      >Wouldn't the pregnant lady be dead after her stomach was cut open? And she died before her husband, why didn't the husband do anything?

I never asked you to review the series. I asked what you considered to be a single piece of horror media that you considered good as a point of contrast. And you’re still terrified of naming one thing you like. How insecure are you?

Anyway, I’m glad you actually used your grown-up words to articulate why you don’t like something. Let me summarize what you said as a show of good faith, but first off:
        >Everyone knows what a perineum is, moron.
        >Why do you assume the wax is a monolith just because the outside is all the same colour? Have you ever seen a geode?
        >We don’t know if the horse was actually used to attack Mae. All we know is that the killer(s) tried to do that. They could have become angry and flayed the horse when their fantasies didn’t work according to plan.
        >People can survive having their whole body flayed for several hours, let alone just their face.
        >It wasn’t the cops who heard Isabelle screaming. It was the dispatcher, and they are trained to be stoic.
        >How is the police force sucking proof the series is dumb and unrealistic? It is extremely unrealistic, but that’s not because it shows cops to be incompetent, lol.
        >Woundfricking has occurred in multiple real-life killers. See Richard Chase. Are you seriously asking why a horror series is drawing from serial killers?
        >Do you know what a Caesarean section is?
        >You understand that “Observing Joe” was bound, right? This is what Richard Ramirez, as well as Leonard Lake & Charles Ng, did. Incapacitate man. Molest woman.

        Anyway, you essentially said:
        >”He uses too many stab wounds.”
        >”How would the coroner know?”
        >”The wax stuff doesn’t make sense!”
In other words, you’re mad that a slasher series (which may have supernatural elements) is unrealistic. Okay.

          >which may have supernatural elements
have we even watched the same thing
not once has supernatural shit come into play, unless you count how fricking fast these crazy little asylum homosexuals are doing this shit and how they just fricking know everything

Nah, it’s there. You’re just stupid and weren’t paying attention.
            >one of the morse codes says “bullets don’t work”
            >killer is supposedly “in the pipes” and “in the walls” like some sort of snake or rat
            >the guy wearing the skin-mask moves up towards the screen in an inhumane way
It’s not confirmed. It’s like the question of whether there were two killers, but it’s definitely a real possibility for anyone with media literacy.

It wasn’t even a jumpscare you pussy

Yes, you’re very tough and scary and are never startled by anything ever. I am very impressed by your immense courage.
            >also funny how you left out the part where I said it startled me because of it’s similarities to a real corpse I’ve seen
The guy makes good art. Keep being a miserable loser who disparages everything, lol.

Agreed, there's a difference between introducing supernatural elements and what feels like just wanking characters.
The Killers, although they might be supernatural, just feel like US is just having them be arbitrarily skilled where it stretches my suspension of disbelief more than explicit supernatural elements would.
