      These.

      Have faith or hope

Try to hold on a little longer

It's in fact a very old-fashioned morale presented in a fricked up modern way. That was great.
      Also

I'm sorry but if this surprised and impressed you ...

Nope zoomer brainlet. When it came out, the tropes were all that the army wouldn't show up, or that if it did it would be before something like this happened, or that the situation would be different and the protagonist wouldn't give up or find another way, or external forces would kill them. All sort of stuff but not that, in addition to the cavalry arriving just a bit late.

          >Watching the film again (it had been a while), I was trying to recall out who the narrator was. For a minute I thought it was Ricky Jay. Turns out the narrator was the assistant editor, a fella named Hugh Ross.
          >Originally, Dominik wanted a woman to do the narration. Ross was in there just as a temp track. And, as so often happens, they fell in love with the temp track. No one could do it as good as Hugh. Oddly, even Hugh couldn’t do it as good as Hugh. When it was time to re-record, he got nervous, or something, and it lacked the essence they loved from the first read. So some of what you hear (much of it poorly recorded, according to Dominik) is that initial voice over.
          >Dominik said that when the movie played festivals, Hugh Ross was part of the gang that travelled with it, and it always freaked people out to hear him talk from the back of a car after watching the movie.

wrong!!! Stephen Maturin is much, much harder to cast than Jack. Bettany is the one who can't be replaced. Today they would cast someone hispanic, but Stephen is first and foremost an Irish person. Being Irish is fairly central to his character.

It must have been amazing to have lived in NYC during that set of time when all of them went up. To go from regular multi-story brick buildings to the behemoths a century later.

Oh like breaking the tradition of the Nervan-Trajan dynasty and instead of adopting the most qualified man to be Emperor you appoint your spoiled brat son?
      I'm still mad.
Because of Commodus, we got the Severans. Because of the Severans, we got the Crisis of the 3rd Century.
Yes, yes Aurelian saved the world. He literally saved the world and there should be a golden statue of Aurelian in any town or city where western people enjoy physical safety because Aurelian died for your sins and Europe would be Africa-tier without Aurelian pulling our balls out of the fire.
But then we had smarty pants Diocletian who strapped us into the Dominate and was too clever by half and accidentally invented Feudalism and accidentally re-enabled Kingship and fractured western civilization until the Venetians sacked Byzantium and kicked off the renaissance 1000 years later. We lost a thousand years.

This show is about as vapid as you can get with symbolism.

        Anonymous

I've never understood this criticism given that the show never tries to use the symbolism for anything beyond aesthetic value, so it comes off as redundant, or disinformed as in the people that say this seem to believe that it's intended to be meaningful

          Anonymous

It comes off pretty disingenuous when some creator used tons of religious imagery trying to appear deep when none of it means anything or goes anywhere. He added those things on purpose but in his own words, it was because they looked neat and would provoke discussion, which is a bullshit thing to do if you never intend to elaborate or do much with it.

Like most of these films, the ending is effective in relation to the rest of the film. It's complicated - happy and tragic at the same time.

this movie is both shlock and pure kino. Why aren't more films like this? Why don't more crypto-conservative Euro directors come to the USA? Verhoeven is a treasure.

        >this movie is both shlock and pure kino. Why aren't more films like this? Why don't more crypto-conservative Euro directors come to the USA? Verhoeven is a treasure.

Because most modern directors try to make movies like this thinking it's some sort of parody or joke. But they are unwilling to go all the way.

Paul Verhoeven goes 100% serious with the story and over the top with the violence and satire elements. But the story is never compromised for laughs. OCP is a company that is ruthless its enemies. But if it existed in real life, most people would want to work there since the pay is so good.

It's what happened to the TV show "The Man in the High Castle". It's an alternate reality story where Nazis won World War 2 by developing nukes first several years before any other country. Then they nuke any country that doesn't submit. No one can stand up to them. So America surrenders after they nuke Washington DC.

The 1st Season was serious and dramatic. There's even a scene Nazis casually talk about burning "undesirables" that are a drain on society. The writers thought that by showing the violence of the Nazis that people would be horrified and support the rebel characters.

Instead what happened was that fans actually enjoyed the writing. They talked about how the Nazis were so powerful and ran a tight country. That the Nazi economy was prosperous, no homeless, etc.

The TV show writers on Twitter went apeshit and said "that's not how you were supposed to enjoy our show!!" For the final Season, they turned the Nazis and Japanese into scared idiots. Suddenly the rebel Fighters were super strong and could fight the enemy head on and win. Blacks rebel and The Japanese literally run away scared. They withdraw their entire Japanese military the USA.

If Paul Verhoeven directed the TV show, he would have dialed the violence to 100%. He would not have pulled back. He would have made the rebels struggle and earn a victory. Not the BS ending we got.
