ITT: Characters who get way too much hate

I really don't understand the seething hatred so many fans have for Terry Long, he was simply a normal dude. It can't just be him being a self-insert, because other self-inserts rarely get this much hate and I doubt most readers at the time were even aware of that.

I hate the "hatebase" this character this character acquired because, while the guy does have flaws, it's become difficult to point them out in a polite space without the assumption that you're among those who respond to the characters existence with racial slurs.

That implies its possible to hate a minority character without hating the minority which crumbles your entire view.

Is Muslim Spiderwoman allowed to fight crime outside her home without a male family member to escort her? If she testified in court against a man, would she need at least another woman or, preferably, another man to back up her testimony for it to even be considered?

False. Ben Reilly got the same amount of vitriol Miles did for the same reasons and it only went away when they stopped trying to force him as -THE- Spider-Man and let him just be -A- Spider-Man.

That sounds like a wrestler name. That sounds like an unstoppable monster heel who has a bunch of squash matches while trying to take over the company, only to have his plans derailed at the very last minute by a fan favorite underdog. Might be cool.

Is there an accepted way to have an Asian master of martial arts portrayed any more? If the character was some street-wise kid I wouldn't think of them as a master, even if they were good in a fight, just from the age difference.

He was a grown ass man, and Donna really didn't need to get married.
It really felt like they forgot the Titans were supposed to still be relatively young.

  8. 2 weeks ago

I think Terry Long wasn't just based off Wolfman, but Len Wein as well.
In a way I think Terry was a sort of fiction suit for DC guys in the office, many of which just had goatees like that, to insert themselves as Donna's husband. Almost like a comic version of Being John Malkovich. It's probably not realized by people now, but Donna was considered one of the sexiest women in comics back then. Even Alan Moore wasn't above fanboying out about her, having John constantine comment on her having a beauty mark in a discreet area. Now she's mostly associated with her confusing backstory. but back then she was basically a younger, more approachable Wonder Woman

Do people still like Donna? After the cartoon on the Johns run excluding her it seems like a lot of Titans fans are happy to pretend Donna doesn't exist.

Donna is hampered by her status as a TT character. WW fans and writers don't care because she's not organic to the WW books and is under different editors. While on the Titans side she's a casualty of the cartoon being unable to use her and the fight between the Titans office and the Gotham office which cuts off her most important relationship among the Titans.
