ITT: relationships that were destroyed by editorial bullshit

Dick and Kory were gonna get married in 1993, but Batman had exploded just 4 years earlier thanks to Batman 1989, and combined with declining Titans sales, Batman had started being a bigger priority whereas a decade before, it was the other way around.

There was a Nightwing mini planned for 1992, by Pamela Winesette and Art Thibert, in where Kory would get captured during an alien invasion and Dick would save her and then propose to her. But the editor, Jonathan Peterson, left to go do shit with Image, which had just been founded at this time, and Art Thibert also left for Image. So with the editor on that gone and Batman taking more priority, Batman editors managed to nix the marriage and relationship in New Titans #100 and ultimately pull Dick from the franchise within the next couple years and put Roy as leader in his place.

Issues #81-83 of Mark Waid's run on The Flash refer to Nightwing and Starfire as husband and wife, just to hammer in how fast the rug got pulled out from under them.

What other relationships were ended because of editorial?

Dick moving on from Starfire was the best thing that happened to his character. Stafire is a terrible character and deadweight that is tied to an awful franchise.

None of his relationships are good but starfire was the best one considering she was literally created to be his love interest.

Dick Babs is bland, boring and toxic. Dick Shawn was just weird and rushed. Dick Bea had nice longevity potential but failed thanks to Ric Grayson. Dick Helena was a passionate rollercoaster destined to crash. Dick Kory was created to help push Dick into being a man and she did her job well. That should be respected and Dick should continue to respect her.

At this point I’d rather Dick not marry or be with anyone romantically. They all suck. I’ll wait it out until he cheats a really nice romance to support. Hopefully DC doesn’t nuke itself or myself interest before then.

The actual Nightwing book begs to differ

The disaster that is the Titans books kind of disproves that. You could hate Nightwing solo but it is nowhere near as bad as the Titans franchise in the comics.

I’d say Jon Kent and Damian Wayne’s friendship because BENIS is a hack (but he’s not the sole hack in DC. I gotta be fair).

Yeah this one. Now they are pushing Dick and Jon as if there is a secret cannon where they had a long brother like relationship.

Dick and Jon are lovers, not brothers

Damian has a lot of friends that just kinda vanish or don't get carried over to other writers (probably because he keeps getting reset characterwise).
Also Jon & Kathy, romantically or otherwise, fell to the same curse.

because every new writer wants to be the one to give him friends

Why do you care? Any ship somehow canonized at one point or another sucks. That what sub-par or soap opera-tier writing does to characters.

Not really. There are many canon romances that are just fine like Lois and Clark or Sue and Reed. However they benefit from being known as THE romance. So DC/Marvel know not to duck it up and fix it if it does. Once the normies decides your canon romance, it’s pretty much set in stone!

Dick unfortunately doesn’t have that pleasure so we are stuck with shitty ass ship writing that destroys his character.

        Neither of those are good.

Mr fantastic and superman's romance are set in stone because they're both in their forties and nobody care about their love life. Meanwhile Nightwing is a young adult and best know for being DC's sexy eyes candy reachable guy. There's no point in comparing these.

Beside, as shitty as his love interests are, the shipping war is the best Nightwing has to offer atm.

    Kyle and Donna.

Byrne wanted Donna in his Wonder Woman book/Wonder Woman franchise in general, and Carlin wanted to push Jade, so they nixed the Kyle/Donna relationship and forced Jade into the book, making her the back up lantern over Guy or John, and making her his ~one true love~.

Thinking about it, this and Dick/Kory happened within like 3 years of each other. I'm curious if there's any more examples around this time because Dick and Jade seemed to have been victims of compartmentalization ie a batcharacter can only be with other batcharacter and as the daughter of GL she has to be in the GL book (since Carlin hated JSA). Donna only being with Roy after breaking up with Kyle might qualify too, as they're both seen as Titans characters first as opposed to Wondy/GA characters.

Good. Donna was better off getting her Amazonian powers restored than being Kyle's depowered wienersleeve waiting to be stuffed in a fridge.

Killed before it got started, would have been better than Laura x Warren.

Tim and Cass were going to bond and eventually hook up over Spoiler’s death, a romance that would get complicated once Stephanie Brown returned from the dead.
