When this came out did the adds have Arnie as the hero or was it a mind frick? I actually saw this one before the first when I was a kid.

Unfortunately it was not kept secret, and was part of the marketing that Arnie would be the good guy, which undermines the way the first part of the film was designed to throw you off. Pity. Studio marketing gays thinking they needed to sell it to the audience by spoiling shit.

Turns out they didn't need to anyway, and also turned out it didn't stop anyone enjoying the film. Just made the move a 10 out of 10 instead of giving you the WTF?-11/10 moment as God-Cameron intended.

It's like knowing Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father before you see Empire, (spoiler).

Which is proof of how well written shit really was back then. Movies were generally designed to be seen stand alone, even if sequel/part of franchise, and it really was a good thing. Challenging for the writers I'm sure, but really led to some great creative writing instead of just lazy flashback type stuff or some shit like that, or expecting you to watch an entire series nobody gives a frick about on Disney+.

        >Movies were generally designed to be seen stand alone, even if sequel/part of franchise
Danny Glover redpilled me on this one with both Lethal Weapon and Predator 2
Lethal Weapon specifically, as I watch them as a teen and never in my fricking life watched them all in order
I could only pinpoint the last one because it was the one with the babies

The way they were written was generally ambiguous, so that you could enjoy it if you had never seen the prior film(s), but also get more out of it if you had.

Early MCU had this going on a bit too for people who had read the comics or seen other material. I was a big IRON MAN fan since before the MCU, so I got a kick out of a lot of details the average gay would have missed, (condensed from decades worth of comics), but you didn't need to know it to enjoy the film if you came in cold.

That used to be THE accepted way to write a movie. Even with the exceptions where you pretty much should have seen the previous films, (like 'Back to the Future III' or 'Return of the Jedi'), they would make it as accessible as possible for any n00bs by trying to make a complete-within-itself film as much as humanly possible. That way, you could enjoy that film and actually want to go back and watch the others.

Aliens is a perfect example of DOING IT RIGHT:
          >b***h gets found floating in space
          >has some wiener and bull story about an alien wiping out her ship
          >Ellen Ripley's character and universe totally reintroduced
in a totally natural way where it could be only film introducing them
          >never saw first alien film? No problem
          >then see first Alien film and shit totally fits and they enhance each other like pottery that rhymes
          >true kino achieved

came here for this. black pearl is kino but dead man’s chest is more creative with worldbuilding, story, and action. World’s End is worth a watch for the conclusion to the Dead Man’s Chest story and the fun battles.

Phantasm II cranked up the action and it holds it's own as the best entry to the Phantasm series. Although I do like how the hemicuda was more prominently featured in the first

I have to disagree with T2. It was the first Terminator movie I saw and thought it was amazing (still is), but the original Terminator is an amazing sci-fi horror.

Aliens was good too, but Alien was fricking amazing by its atmosphere, setting, and how these were regular working class people that didn't have weapons against a dangerous creature.
