Not sure why Disney refuses to put House of Mouse on Disney+.

      Anonymous

It’s because that series has a running gag about Mickey eating cheese and IIRC, runs around on a hamster wheel at one point. Disney is super autistic about how its classic characters are presented, and for Mickey one of those rules is he's not allowed to be seen doing stereotypical mouse things.

I want you to stop and think for a second: how many times do you remember seeing Mickey Mouse eat cheese like a stereotypical mouse? And I mean cheese proper, no "Well he eats pizza in this cartoon and it’s got cheese so it counts :)". The only examples I can think of are
          >the aforementioned House of Mouse,
          >a couple Italian comics, which the main Disney company barely pays attention too so they get a lot of leeway
          >a single cartoon done VERY early
That’s it. Every other time you see him eating cheese it’s part of a larger meal, like your average human being… which is what Mickey actually IS. He’s not supposed to actually BE a mouse, he’s supposed to be a man who merely LOOKS like a mouse.

That was only the case for a period of time when Walt was alive (which is why Mickey lost his tail at some point), that's why House of Mouse could do it, because it wasn't a rule anymore, and it sure as hell isn't a rule today.

          Anonymous

          >it sure as hell isn't a rule today.
Are you sure? Because after HoM Mickey went right back to downplaying his rodent characteristics. Yeah you’re right on it not being a rule during HoM’s lifetime, but that was 20 years ago, during a time when Disney was in a slump. The leadership has greatly changed since then and Eisner was a LOT more willing to let creators experiment with established properties than Iger or… whoever the current guy is, I forgot his name and I don’t care to look it up.

            >Because after HoM Mickey went right back to downplaying his rodent characteristics.
I think it's less about them not being "allowed" to make jokes about Mickey being a mouse, and more about them simply not wanting to, not everything they stop doing is because of some kind of rule, sometimes different writers simply have different ways to write the same character, the House of Mouse staff obviously liked to joke about the fact that Mickey was a mouse, that was one of the things they did to make their take on Mickey stand out, not every writer after them is going to do the same.
            >The leadership has greatly changed since then and Eisner was a LOT more willing to let creators experiment with established properties than Iger or… whoever the current guy is, I forgot his name and I don’t care to look it up.
I'm also saying the rule still doesn't apply today because the current Mickey series has done multiple jokes about the characters' species, I don't recall any specific joke about Mickey being a mouse, but I would assume if they can joke about Donald and Goofy being a duck and a dog, they can joke about Mickey being a mouse if they wanted to.

Your theory seems less likely and more complicated than the simple “Disney doesn’t like these depictions of Mickey and so banned them”

                Anonymous

It's as simple as "different people write Mickey differently", there's nothing complicated about it.

                >different people write Mickey differently
                >every single different writer though has avoided one specific depiction of Mickey
                >this is not due to a Disney mandate, it’s just a coincidence
                >however Walt Disney did enforce that mandate, but it’s gone now because it just is okay
                Or
                >Walt Disney set a mandate
                >Eisner loosened it when he was in charge
                >since he’s been gone it’s now back

                Anonymous

                >every single different writer though has avoided one specific depiction of Mickey
It's not a "depiction" of Mickey, gags about him being a mouse were just that, gags about him being a mouse, except for a short or two like "When the cat's away" where Mickey is an actual mouse, having mouse traits has never been a big part of Mickey's character, so it's not like writers are avoiding it because "it's a rule", they just don't do it because that's not something that Mickey is known for.
House of Mouse had these jokes to contrast with Mickey's average dude personality, it was the exception, not the rule, something like that wouldn't fit in something like fricking Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.
And then there's also the fact that there's just not much that can be do with it without going into others things that mice do like spreading diseases or being pests, which is even something that HoM avoided, these jokes aren't as exploitable as Donald being a duck or Goofy being a dog, cartoon mice are usually only known for really liking cheese, which has never been a big part of Mickey's character, sure he likes cheese, but he's not like Bugs Bunny is with carrots.
                >however Walt Disney did enforce that mandate, but it’s gone now because it just is okay
It's gone because Disney died and they relaxed with what Mickey could do, simple as that, and if we go by the modern Mickey cartoons, they're still relaxed.
                >Eisner loosened it when he was in charge
                >since he’s been gone it’s now back
Walt was the one who enforced the rule in the first place, the later presidents didn't have such autism for Mickey, specially not for such a minute detail.
Just because we haven't seen something happen in a while, doesn't mean it's banned, specially if it was just some gags from many years ago, sometimes writers just want to do different things.

Mickey doing mouse things seems like a gag the Paul Rudish shorts would've done at least once, but I don't think they have. It wouldn't surprise me if the rule was still in effect.

            Anonymous

I actually thought about it and I'm not sure if they would do something like that. Like, I specifically recall Mickey drinking from a hamster bottle and having a big hamster wheel as a gag in House of Mouse, the joke there was about the contrast of Mickey, who was a mostly average dude, doing something so outlandish and animalistic.
On the other hand, I'm not so sure how they could work a mouse joke into a Rudish short without it being out of place, where the comedy usually comes from them exaggerating mundane things like painting a house or selling food, everything is already wacky and over the top, Mickey suddenly eating cheese or doing whatever else that mice do (transmit diseases? I dunno) would probably not be that much of a joke.
And I must remind you they've done jokes about Donald being a duck and Goofy being a dog multiple times, so it's not like they can't joke about the characters' animalistic traits.

The fact that Disney allows those episodes to stay up instead of having their lawyers take them down like they do with everything else shows how little they care.

Every episode is on Youtube and it's not illegal to watch a video on Youtube.

Despite how iconic it is, the original 1960s Spider-Man series isn't on Disney+ or any other streaming service, and it only got one DVD release in 2004, which is long since out of print.

What’s funny to me is how Star Command seemed way more respectful to Buzz than Lightyear.
In Star Command, Buzz is THE ultimate hero. He treats every living thing with respect, he follows procedure to a fault because he believes rules separate the lawful and lawless, he can go hand to hand against everyone from Warp Darkmatter to Zurg (who’s shown to be ridiculously strong), and even whenever he’s wrong it’s simply because of his unyielding optimism as opposed to being a jerk or just outright stupid. Buzz is the guy young kids want to be.

In Lightyear, Buzz is nothing but an incompetent screwup. He has to constantly be saved, told what to do, or has to fix his mistakes. He never feels like a leader or someone to make the right call, and his Buzz-isms are out of insecurity as opposed to a sense of duty (the mission log being the biggest example).

When I was a kid, I had some of the Star Command toys. I guarantee I wouldn’t have wanted any Lightyear toys. That right there means Lightyear failed the point of the movie.

all because Pixar and John lasseter are petty pieces of shit that thought the show was a disgrace to the Buzz Lightyear name, when they wanted the show to be more serious and 50s sci-fi drama or some shit like that. John Lasseter only said his vision of a Buzz Lightyear show was in the same tone as Space Ghost.
