I'm 21, and I was raised on a lot of 2000s memes back when I was a kid.
Memes were barely a thing, let alone relevant to the general populace until ~2007ish.
The only people in the know about them were forum browsers.
I'm getting pretty tired of younger Gen z conflating the mid-2000's with the 2010's.
We didn't call them memes but I remember Mr. T Ate My Balls (and 'Mr. T vs' that grew out of it) and Yatta edits and Fight! Kikkoman and AYB.
we used to call some memes "macros". I think either because some people created them using macros, but I dunno.

"macro" became a general linguistic term for internet pictures later on it's weird how nowadays most 'pictures' are assumed to be on the internet kinda like how we refer to all phones as 'cellphones' aka 'cellular phones' despite modern phones no longer containing bees
