Jodorowsky's Dune

Be honest, Cinemaphile...if for some UNFATHOMABLE reason this movie got made as Jodorowsky intended, with his vision COMPLETELY INTACT, budget and length be damned, and it got a wide release...do you HONESTLY believe it would've had a chance?

Not really. I'd like to see it, but Dune is better in book form, it translates badly to screen.

      Not a fan of Lynch's OR Denis's vision, eh? I haven't seen either, so I wouldn't know.

        Anonymous

I liked Lynch's version a lot, even though a large part of it fundamentally misunderstood from the book, like the ending. But it had the most soul so far. I don't like Denis' that much at all besides some of the effects like the shields.

          OP

It's give or take. One of the other anons said that Dune is REALLY hard to properly adapt to screen. I have to agree. Reading the damn thing is like a Rorschach tests in and of itself, so how Lynch and Denis interpreted it is different than how you or I would do so.

            Anonymous

Oh definitely. So much of it is in people's minds or complex scheming so it doesn't always make for an immediately interesting movie to non-fans unfamiliar with Dune. And I think the follow on books are almost un-filmable. They wouldn't make much money anyway. Would still love to see someone try. The Children of Dune miniseries was decent.

I think Dune: Messiah would make a wonderful film. It's much smaller scale and it reads almost more like a crime thriller than the other books. Imagine the nuke scene on screen. It's my hope that Denis' Dune is successful enough to take us all the way into Dune: Messiah on film.

Lynch's version was the best because, in order to make the "unfilmable" Dune into a movie, he intentionally broke cardinal rules of filmmaking, like having significant portions of character dialogue be internal.

            Anonymous

When I first watched it, I honestly didn't mind the internal dialogue and thought they added much needed info. I don't get the hate for them unless it's on some movie with silly and simple stories/characters.

no one minded, it was part of the film.
one critic must have written about it and a utuber clown read that critic's critique and then all the imbeciles watched that utuber and now perpetually repeat the exact same things through their recycled mindless mouths.
              it is usually the case.
most of the morons in this thread likely only know about jodkmaoejeroksky's version vision of the original vision version because of a utube cancer.

American Psycho uses it. And I think Sorcesse likes to use it, and you get a kind of hybrid-monologue version of it in Goodfellas and Wolf of Wall Street. But I can't think of a movie off the top of my head has multiple characters use internal dialogue like Lynch did.

        >Not a fan
I like them both, but I don't think the theme and style of Dune translates well.
Take LotR - movies are wildly different from books, they are much more action focused, and it works.
I doubt you can do the same with Dune and still keep it good.

Literally this. Dune is way better as a book. Still would want to see Jodorowsky's take on Dune though.

most non druggies don't understand how deep that conversation has gone since the 60s. some "drug users" nowadays don't even consider weed a drug which Jodorowsky definitely smokes and has admitted to. some place it in the same category as cigarettes and coffee.

I don’t know much about how far it got, but I do know that Jodorowsky did a lot of research.
I don’t see the point of posts like this one. The movie was not made, get over it, however we can take away something from Jodo, in his perspective and insights into the media itself.

That might be good so they could at least get the whole story out. I still think there's something really comfy about seeing them in the live action desert though.

I would watch a book series spanning animated anthology. 30 minute- 1h long episodes that go through the entire mythos of Dune. All done in Mobeus' BD style with fluid animation.
Maybe one day when people forget about dunc and the zoomies get nostalgic.

    It’s always difficult to say.
In the documentary, Jodorowsky says he didn’t read dune, my guess is that he would’ve made his own movie, like Kubrick did the Shining, people would’ve liked it, but it would not be seen as Dune canon.

      Anonymous

I think he actually did say he read Dune but the way he phrased it was confusing. He said he locked himself in a mansion or something for two weeks and read it. He definitely didn't give the impression he cared about the story at all, though, in the anecdote or at any other time in the documentary.
