Joe Pera

There is nothing "sincere" or "wholesome" or "comfy" about this guy.

He is definitely a pedophile, but everyone famous is

To me it always looked like this is a borderline mean-spirited impersonation of the guy's science teacher from high school. But the show is mostly good, except for the terrible episode about the Who song.

You should unironically seek help if this is your takeaway from the show. Second guessing everything is a sign of schizophrenia.

There certainly isn't anything genuine about it. It's all a "post-ironic", sarcastic parody. It's fakeness masquerading as sincerity. Horrible shit for midwit gays.

It's a sarcastic, ironic act. If you aren't smart enough to understand that, I can't help you.

        Anonymous

It's not sarcastic at all. Your brain is literally too melted from layers of irony and years of post-ironic detachment to even recognize a straightforward, wholesome exercise.

Well, I just disagree with that. Pera does post-ironic "comedy". It's fake. The whole thing is fetishistic and gross. I'll double down and even call it satanic. It's no surprise that he is friends with the Townsends homosexual. The "orange fool is just a drink and not a political statement" guy. Another pseudo-le wholesome pos.

            >It's fake.
It's fake in the sense that he's playing a character, obviously, but genuine in the sense that he's not making fun of people who act like that. It's Mr. Rogers for millennial adults who are tired of irony.
            >I'll double down and even call it satanic.

I've discussed this on here before and I think I've come to the conclusion that he was probably mostly sincere but that he carries a hint of irony with him, which is something inherent in his generation. If his intent was to create some sort of cynical, satirically ironic portrait of simple Midwestern life then I think he failed because I myself and others have derived a sense of coziness and sincerity from the show.

It is insincere to "attempt" sincerity.

        Anonymous

I don't agree with that statement at all; however, I didn't say he attempted to be sincere. I said that I think he was sincere but that he cannot escape the ironical tone inherent in his generation.

The show itself is a purposeful attempt at sincerity. And if you are attempting to appear sincere, you aren't being sincere.

You want sincere Midwestern comfy nerd guy sharing his interest: do that. Don't have some comedian from New York give his modern day Larry the Cable Guy act. We're POC that deserve fair representation on the screen.

The fact that he's playing a character is irrelevant as long as the intent of the show is not to make fun of the character or the type of person that he represents. The depiction is done with love, not mockery, that's really all that matters.

It's a comedy but the jokes don't feel mean spirited. There's a world of difference between mocking someone and acknowledging their quirks.

            Anonymous

I disagree. If someone makes an attempt to appear sincere it often comes from a place of sincerity anyway. The key element is intent. Consciousness of your own presentation does not preclude sincere feelings.

              Anonymous

You don't get it. If you have to try to be sincere, you aren't.

I don't agree. I think we've become accustomed to irony. I think it's even become habit. I think it's gotten to the point that we've begun to mask our sincere feelings with irony as a defensive mechanism. We wish to avoid insults and taunts from others so we hide our sincere beliefs behind a veil of irony. It can be hard to break this habit. I often have a knee jerk reaction to express myself with irony though my feelings are sincere. I'm giving Joe the benefit of the doubt that he is the same way.

                Anonymous

The show takes a stereotype of what sincerity is and makes a parody out of it. It's dishonesty on display as honesty.

                Anonymous

Could be. That's what this whole argument has been about and it's probably impossible to know for sure. I think the show is pretty cozy but I find it most appealing when the characters aren't the focus.
