The only way to give the sequel any chance of having as much cultural impact or being as profitable as the first movie is to do something weird and out of left field like this. The first movie worked as its own singular product too, any conventional sequel would just ruin that

      Anonymous

Doesn't make sense to me. There are many successful sequels that didn't have to try hard to be different. And a very common complaint about failed sequels is how they are too much of a departure from the well-liked original.
The whole point of a sequel is to follow an already successful product and get guaranteed views from fans of the original, like Marvel did for a decade. Making a sequel drastically different in format, tone, and target audience guarantees that people will hate it only because it's too different and feels like being robbed of a proper sequel.

        Anonymous

If its done well, having the sequel be tonally different can work out. But it has to be done well, and current Hollywood doesnt seem to be focused on making good movies. For example, there is a massive shift in tone between Star Trek The Motion Picture and Wrath of Khan. Wrath of Khan despite being a sequel is a highly regarded movie.

I don't think anyone wanted a Joker sequel though. Putting the same character in a different style of movie is a good idea. Plus Harley Quinn is a pretty silly character so the movie needs to be silly too.

          >Plus Harley Quinn is a pretty silly character so the movie needs to be silly too.
That's a good point. They seem to be using her origin story for this, where she's a psychiatrist who becomes fascinated and corrupted by Joker. That's a fairly wild concept, and it needs camp to be pulled off well. Even when they gave her much more serious portrayals in her few Black Label series, they switched up the scenario quite a bit to make it work.

            Anonymous

That's not a wild concept that's an everage woman and it has actually happened. More than once

        Anonymous

Sure, this is how it works in most cases, but Joker was a unique product among comic blockbusters (not to say it's superior or anything, just different) and people didn't go to see it for action or adventure or quips or anything that can be dragged across sequels. It was a meme and a cultural moment that also happened to be a compelling, character driven adult drama. It was entirely self contained and left no room for a conventional sequel. It was a one time thing, like Taxi Driver or King of Comedy. We know everything we need to know about Bickle, Pupkin, and Fleck and witnessed the climax for them as characters. What could be expanded on or duplicated from the first movie that wouldn't make a sequel completely redundant? And don't say Batman because that would also be a complete departure from the first film, just a far less interesting one that the studio would never greenlight with another Bat franchise also going. If they want to replicate the meme/cultural moment success of the first movie they need to do something weird, nobody is going to be intrigued by another movie about a loner incel. My point is that Joker doesn't beg for a sequel like Star Wars or The Avengers so you can't plan a sequel for it as if it does. Its risky but a musical has the potential for a far greater payoff than something redundant.

          >My point is that Joker doesn't beg for a sequel like Star Wars or The Avengers
I agree with that, but the decision to make a sequel has already been made. So what's worse - a decent yet underwhelming sequel that maintains tone, format, and themes, or one a musical with a contemporary pop star, of all things?
How would a Taxi Driver musical sequel be remembered, to use your example?

            Anonymous

I think a Taxi Driver sequel would have been a blight on Scorsese's career (if he even made it) and it would flop at the box office. Its harder to say what would happen with a musical sequel but at the very least people would say "remember that weird Taxi Driver sequel that was a musical?" instead of forgetting about it entirely. In the case of Joker I would much rather watch a musical sequel than waste my money on something redundant. I'm excited because it's a weird idea and it might be terrible, but at least it'll be funny to see the funny incel meme man sing along to classic rock. If it was just a straight sequel I'd assume it was a shitty cashgrab and wait until word came in on its quality post-release before seeing it myself. I didnt enjoy Joker in a way that left me wanting more of the same. I just think its an interesting decision, and something I'd rather see when I dont care about having more of the first movie. Aliens changed course dramatically from Alien and I think thats part of why its so well remembered compared to other horror sequels from the time

The only jukebox musical that I liked and actually worked well with the concept was Across the Universe, and only because they completely centered the themes, characters and setting around The Beatles. Instead of just jamming in a lot of random songs together. Now I do like Moulin Rouge, but not as a movie, it's just a collection of set pieces. I can watch some of them individually and like them, but not the whole movies.

      Anonymous

I am hoping that they draw heavy inspiration from Across the Universe. It will have to be like an extended setpiece for a series of music videos strung together with some plot. It needs solid theming and stylization, and they should play around with how 3d space works, like staging scenes inside the character's heads or rapidly switching sets in ways that aren't possible irl.

        Anonymous

What I wonder is if they'd stick to the setting, Joke 2 likely takes place between the 70's and 80's, but who knows. Or maybe they discard that and just like Moulin, use music from any decade they want. This can work but it's gonna be fricking tricky. When I though this was a musical I though, oh well it'll likely be just like Sweeney Todd, edgy, dark humour, macabre, that sort of thing, hell the original Sweetey Todd could easily be re-worked into a Joker/Harley musical. But Jukebox? I really have no idea.

          Anonymous

Anachronisms between the songs and setting are not something that would bother me, but I am certain it would upset a lot of people. There was a lot of butthurt when Evan Peters covered a Nirvana song in an AHS season that took place in the 50s. I thought it was just fine. https://youtu.be/jXX--sSjs1c?si=rXryxCGPk1_HI_EW

This kind of thing sucks not because muh anachronism, but because it’s completely fricking pointless from a narrative perspective.

Ehh, I feel like half of everything Ryan Murphy does on AHS is just fricking around for fun. Joker 2's strengths will be its style and theming, not so much its narrative, if I had to guess.

I'm 100% sure the director was told (perhaps by producers connected to the sectors of the government, perhaps by such sectors themselves) to take the sequel in a different direction "so as not to encourage acts of male rage" or some such nonsense.
I also wouldn't be surprised if the movie attempts to "deconstruct" the Joker character by making him pathetic or weak or whatever. Burdening him with fricking Lady Gaga as a sidekick or whatever is pathetic enough.

As an homage to Bickle and Pupkin, his weakness worked just fine in the first movie. What I don't want to see is for him to become reformed. Joker is almost always dumb when they make him not crazy. His character arc in this should have him making peace with becoming monstrous.

Your low IQ spergout is both naive and moronic.
If you believe the director had "carte blanche" on a mainstream Hollywood project about a white agent of chaos at this day and age without being"advised" by the powers that be (not to mention the indirect pressured from peers/press) you belong on reddlt with the other lowest common denominators.

Yeah the theory about government connected people shaping the story is WAYYYY more likely and higher IQ. Todd Phillips definitely didn’t earn the respect and clout to make whatever kind of film he wanted after the success of The Hangover franchise and Joker. Adding Lady Gaga as Harley definitely isn’t a logical narrative stepping stone and is just being done to make Arthur look pathetic or weak because he wasn’t that at all in the first film!
Just because the CIA writes Nolan’s films doesn’t mean every single film production is being run through Langley.
I’m just trying elucidate why you think adding a musical component and well-respected artist to a film series that has already taken a different approach from traditional comic book adaptation is a step back and degradation of the first film.

Why is a musical sequel with Lady Gaga in a main role automatically going to be terrible?

Won’t argue with most of your list, although Zach Galifianakis I’d say is the reason 3 of those suck. Haven’t seen Starsky & Hutch in a bit, but I recall it being a decent flick. And Road Trip is a solid first feature, flawed but a perfectly acceptable directorial debut. My point is that Phillips has proven himself commercially and critically with his previous films, and Joker proved he could provide a compelling, unique vision of a well-established character. He’s earned at least a little hope and optimism.

The only sequel that would have worked would be a series of short stories about Joker, all from different perspectives so each one is a different story and tone. All to enhance the legend of Joker from the overall perspective of a film crew documenting him and the tales of him.

it is unironically a humiliation ritual. The popularity of the first film angered a lot of people as it was perceived as fueling the incel, alt-right, anti-establishment, etc. movements.
There is no need for a sequel, this movie is a Hollywood redact. They want to trash the reputation of this brand and retroactively ruin the first movie so that people remember it differently.

    Lol
My dad worked on this movie and the headlines make it seem more confusing than it is, it’s not a sincere attempt at a musical, it’s very much a weird and experimental thing that is going to 100% filter normies. The first movie doesn’t state when it takes place but it visually is clearly supposed to be reminiscent of the 70s and 80s and this one takes places in the same time but has songs from modern times (90s and 2000s) but isn’t addressed at all and is supposed to punctuate the chaos and jokers mental illness. some of the songs don’t even fit the atmosphere of the scenes they’re playing in and will just play over serious scenes and will be handled completely seriously. It will be very surreal and tongue in cheek and like I said normies will be in the theatre and I can guarantee one saying “uhhh what the hell?” In confusion. Trust the process bros, it’s kino
