I understand that’s the point, what I’m saying is not going deeper into the characters in order to enable that GoT style grey morality, or to leave the character work to a future screenwriter, is a crutch. I won’t go as far as saying that’s a hack move since GRRM is playing to his strengths as a plotter and his readers’ expectations, but the style is not for me.
Some of the best content in GOT like Typwin-Arya scenes, Hardhome etc was OC content. With a plot summary laid out, official GRRM involvement and millions of dollars it's almost guaranteed not to fail. Almost.

If they wanted to keep it low budget, make it a fantasy dipshit version of Deadwood. North of the Wall = Cold as shit wild west, no big central government, etc. Jon, Tormund, etc. are establishing a new town, Jon acts as sheriff, Tormund a tavern proprieter, etc. Fantasy Deadwood. Simple as.
A more focused, beyond the wall only story that isn't bound by the books could be kino in the right hands... Raimi comes to mind but he'd never sign onto it.
