..its not that it was "bad" it was just the least good part for me of the manga.. i am way more a fan of the violent dark magical fantasy setting and fights that come after
to be fair it's mostly just griffith and casca. aside from them it isn't so much the characters themselves since they're more of a backdrop and you're right to say their characterisation is light. it's more what joining the band of the hawk meant to guts. until then he was emotionally broken from trauma and unable to connect with people, even couldn't be touched at all by anyone around him from living so long as a lone wolf with his experiences festering in his mind, ultimately he does what he can to survive and disregards the emotions of other people in the black swordsman arc. the band of the hawk was literally the first place where he experienced a sense of belonging, it was more than just another mercenary group. griffith was genuinely his first friend in an otherwise unforgiving world.
i have my own issues with berserk, particularly the pacing after a certain point and how the tone changes after the tower of conviction arc. but as a fantasy and horrorgay it is to me one of if not the greatest accomplishments in the history of dark fantasy media.
