No, it literally kills you like your conscious is gone and replaced with an exact replica with all your memories, emotions, whatever. No one can tell the difference, not even your clone, it's just that your original self or your clone that goes through the transporter sleeps forever.

Sorry to burst your meme bubble, but even in TOS we saw people moving (That Which Survives) and even talking (Wrath of Khan) while being transported. You're alive through the entire process. The you at the far end is the you from the start.

Transporters are in-universe the safest way to travel. Sure, they occasionally de-age people to childhood or beam you to an alternate universe or do some other wacky but they don't murder you ever time you transport. The fact that we see people moving and talking in the beams shows that their consciousness persists throughout the process. They take you apart and put you back together but you're always you.

You wouldn't know otherwise. If the real you died and a copy was created at that exact moment, the copy would just assume it was the real you continuing your life. But you would still be dead.

                Anonymous

The fact that people can move and talk while being transported shows that you are wrong. They are conscious the whole time. There is no interruption in their stream of existence.

Didn't Riker get duplicated in one episode? How could that happen if it's only the original you being transported?

        Anonymous

Because of a unique set of circumstances. When those crop up the transporter can do some really wacky things like splitting you into two people, de-aging you, or whatever the plot demands. By all rights they should just store a Young You version in memory and keep you alive forever by beaming your memories into it every few years.

The basic function of the thing is to move you from one place to another and it does this 99.999999% of the time. Those are pretty good odds.

It's like the faster than light teleportation in BSG. It doesn't kill the host and reanimates a copy, it's simply transporting converted matter through a higher dimension with less entropy (subspace), and the subject gets reconverted to matter at the destination.

That's not how they work. In the Trek Universe consciousness is just the quantum state of all particles in your brain. The transporter simply moves those particles nearly instantly from one position to another while maintaining their quantum state. In fact it's shown that consciousness never actually ceases from the perspective of the transported in at least three episodes. The transporter doesn't make a clone of you, it transports the exact particles that make you to another place at FTL, including their quantum state.

Fun fact, the use of the transporters have to have dedicated memory banks larger than those used by the ships computer for the explicit purpose of remembering the quantum state of a transported person. They use up a mind boggling amount of memory in order to account for all the trillions of particles in a body.

What is the point of a transporter when you have replicating technology? Why beam Picard down to a planet when you can just replicate him? Then you have two Picards, one on the planet and one still in charge of the ship. It just makes more sense.

90% of Star Trek is "we could easily do X but our weird quasireligious mentality prevents us from doing so"
Look at how in-universe eugenic supermen are perfectly possible and it's considered a deeply capital offense to create or even be one

        >it's considered a deeply capital offense to create or even be one
Humanity literally started a near species ending world war over this and only just barely survived. IIRC the "supermen" also unleashed a bioplague so not only was there a massive destructive war, but the survivors then had to outlast super aids.

Basically the ST take on eugenic supermen is that, like AI, they will nearly always end up trying to take out "regular" humanity.

Probably not a good idea to be deliberately creating clones of people to do things the original person doesn't want to do for themselves.

Usually replicators don't go that deep. They can only produce inanimate matter like food or tools, dead salad and dead meat, but no living things.

The idea of a transporter that murders you when you leave and builds a new you at the far end is an old one in sci-fi. Simak did it in Way Station in 1964.

Your idea, on the other hand, is stupid. Who gets to be captain when there are a bunch of Picards? Who gets to decide which one stays alive when you inevitably have to murder a bunch of them? What do you do when the copies inevitably decide they have a right to live past the time you decide to murder them?

Remember that time the Romulan sun went supernova and it somehow instantly destroyed most of their empire, including planets that were hundreds of light years away, even though if the supernova were spreading at the speed of light, it would have taken centuries to reach them, and also basically everybody in the galaxy could look up and see it happening

In the 20th century we discovered that space and time are inexorably linked; we now call it Spacetime. In the 21st century we will discover that matter itself is also a component of this. You are the space that you occupy. This solves the problem of "what if a clone with your exact quantum state was created right in front of you, where would your consciousness be?" Because you are currently occupying space it would stay in the space that it exists at. The new clone would occupy a different space.
