Can anyone remind me of the origin of this meme? Were there two different teleporters in Star Trek?

Realm of Fear has always had a moronic premise. Moving while in a transporter beam will kill you, yet humans turned into giant tardigrades that live and move around inside the beam?

Isn't it from TOS with McCoy's fear of transporters? Is that not the stated reason? And isn't that why it's usually the medical doctors who don't like transporters, like Pulaski? I know he explicitly states it that way in Abrams trek, at least.

        Anonymous

McCoy doesn't like transporters because of the possibility of them malfunctioning and splitting you into two different people or turning you into a blob of meat

        that episode aired in 2013
in 2008 the issue was discussed by the character Sheldon in season 1 of Big Bang Theory, episode "Jerusalem Duality"

      >Were there two different teleporters in Star Trek?
The explanation of how it works and how it actually behaved throughout the series didn't match at all.

It's supposed to transmit your actual atoms through a matter-beam and your unique pattern as information so you get re-assembled just as you were at the target location.
But we see again and again how it can make multiple copies of people and store people's pattern in a computer almost indefinitely, as well as actually merge people together and then later split again.
It's obviously just a copying machine, not the magic portal device it gets sold as.

    It's this simple.
If you don't believe souls exist, you don't think it kills you.
If you believe souls exist, it know it does kill you.

Souls are supernatural and would obviously be able to travel faster than the speed of light. They can also obviously remain outside the body unless you're one of the small subset of people that does believe in souls, but does not believe in an afterlife. Absolutely no reason to believe that the soul wouldn't be able to inhabit the new empty vessel during or after its transmission.

        Anonymous

        >souls
you're assuming the soul can't find the recreated vessel.

If souls don't exist, it ultimately doesn't matter since we are just the sum of our parts.
If souls do exist, I'm sure it could travel to the new body. It's essentially doing that on a much smaller scale every instant of everyday as we replace the old cells in our body.

Or souls don't even exist in a physical space as we understand it.

Why would your soul just jump into your other body? Our souls aren't constantly seeking a body to inhabit. When we die, our souls presumably leave our body, because they've been unshackled from them. If you step into a teleporter and it cuts you into trillions of little pieces and transports them across the galaxy, your soul gets left behind at the teleporter and presumably leaves as if you just died.

What arbitrarily links your soul to your current body? Does a new soul form with the new body? Or is the new body now a soulless husk? If that's the case, what even is the function of a soul?

No that would be YOUR theory. MY theory is that souls are paracausal beings capable of free will, shackled in these meat sacks. When we die they're free from their chains. Why would they go float over to the new body? They're not organic so they wouldn't be transferred with the trillion little pieces either.

What arbitrarily links your soul to your current body? Does a new soul form with the new body? Or is the new body now a soulless husk? If that's the case, what even is the function of a soul?

God presumably placed your soul in your body when you were conceived. Your body didn't create it. It's not organic or biological. Yes, in a non libcuck fantasy the body that comes out the other side would be a soulless husk. We don't know what that looks like but I imagine it'd be pretty damn scary. Souls are our true selves, piloting these meat sacks that we were forced into until it dies.

                >Just like how he doesn't place it in another body if you have a nice day
You literally have zero idea that is the case. Just what you pretend to be true because someone else told you it is, which they also have no proof of and just feel it is right. For all you really know, that soul goes right on to a new body to start over, and you can't prove any different.

Well no, that's when it matters the most. Since then my consciousness, the one typing this right now, would cease to exist and a new one would take its place, possibly not even knowing. I would not 'take over' the new body, I would simply cease to exist as if I died from my point of view.

what if souls do exist and they function like flash memory and once you power off it gets wiped to blank but its still there
so then using a replicator/transporter would be like creating a save state

Transporters would be possible without necessarily killing you if they just moved your atoms from A to B without passing through the middle space, without disassembling you, sort of like a personal wormhole. That way there's no implied death and no question of whether it's really you on the other side.

Other way around. Your soul will continue on in it's new body. Otherwise your new body would end up as a lifeless husk. If souls don't exist, it kills and replaces you, but it doesn't matter, because there's no deeper "you" to lose.
