King of the Hill

Someone recently posted that John Redcorn seems like he's pretending to be a native and is actually an Italian... That might be partially true. The evidence against this theory is that he was able to get federal land, he is knowledgeable about some native customs and the preservation of native culture does seem to be important to him. His skin also much darker than what I would expect from mediterranean people, and of the thing about Joseph's mixed ancestry being obvious to everyone except Dale and Joseph himself is a running gag that wouldn't work if John Redcorn was secretly white.

Of course... There are a few holes in John Redcorn's backstory. The most obvious problem is that the tribe claims to be part of died out before European colonization of the Americas, putting into question both what his lineage looks like and his claims that the Europeans stole the land of "his" people. The series never goes into full detail about his particular tribe beyond some information that they used to practice cannibalism but don't anymore. We also never see any other members of his tribe nor does he ever associate with any other natives as far as I can tell. When it comes to the land he managed to get from the government, he also seems to be able to act with full authority over it with no additional input from anyone else.

So I think that that there is a possibility that John Redcorn is indeed native american but far less native than he claims. So it's not exactly hard to imagine that his real lineage is something like him having an english speaking mestizo grandmother who had lost all cultural ties to her native heritage, which he tries to reclaim in a misguided way. Then his dad could be some Italian named Rosso-Grano.

They've explained why Nancy was able to pass off Joseph's skin color to keep up the lie about him being Dale's. Nancy comes from a mixed race family and her grandmother was Jamaican.

I would assume that her grandmother stayed in Arlen and was seen around town (except by Peggy though that can be explained via it happening before she moved to town) and everyone didn't care that Nancy wasn't 100% white and just white passing third generation mulatto.

Nancy told Peggy that DALE had a Jamaican grandmother.

Dale's grandmother is jamaican though I assume comically that any truth to this story neglects the fact she's still probably a white Jamaican

      >belong to my people
Isn't the whole thing about native tribes is that they didn't have a concept of ownership like most people do?

If there's any truth to that it's probably overstated especially given that Native Americans literally span all of North America and the possibility of every single tribe holding the same vague concept of not claiming land is stupid.

I don't know man. He canonically eats 9 small meals a day (somehow out-eating Bill "The Billdozer" Dautrieve), so if anything, his diet would keep the essence of tobacco forming from any of his lower ends. Then again, the amount of carcinogens he consumed over a matter of decades may have permeated into all aspects of his body. In one episode he was hospitalized after inhaling too much pesticide during a house call, which was likely exacerbated by his smoking habits. However, in another episode his kidneys were viable for organ transplantation even though he is a chronic smoker. Unless you count his oral cavity just as pleasurable.

he got tribal land from the government. in order to do that you have to be a certain percentage of native blood by law. so he is native.

Non sedentary societies do define border and areas of political control, the Mongols are a good example of that (although not all natives were nomadic, iirc the Muskogee and Iroquois weren't), the Indian removal act (that caused the trail of tears), the main beef between Natives and the US has consistently been that the US looked at (and looks at) natives as "sovereign" where it was convenient (like with land transfers made by the Cherokee to the US in treaties), and subject where it wasn't (like with the enforcement of the Indian removal act.

most tribes understood the concept of owning land
they spent thousands of years killing each other over that land

      Anonymous

They understood territory just fine, everyone does. The whole "trading beads for land they don't think they own" thing was a legend based off when one nomadic tribe sold some land that was depleted of game to hunt, only to learn that the people they sold it to were going to farm it. To them, they were selling hunting rights that were worthless, to the buyers it was a deed to a plot of land.

There is no "native tribes". Native Americans were an entire race with every sort of government and culture and language you can imagine. Some had great cities and strong confederations, others had great nomadic empires and sacred lands, quite a few had settled agricultural coieties, and others simply wandered around picking fights over game trails.

This. It's a lot more complicated than most people are willing to admit. The various native tribes were more commonly more similar to a hunter gather society than the more industrialized European societies. Which in turn meant very different values in land ownership and property rights.

Technically the israeli Lawyer pretending to be Indian who dicked him over when he made a deal for construction rights or something on his land so he could make a casino/music venue then it was a scam to dump toxic waste since he knew that the land had no gambling rights.
Though in general it would've been better if he had some inference of a Tribal community beyond himself. All we really got was a flashback when he was younger.
      >Tries to go to his fellow tribesmen to bemoan the situation with Joseph

The irony in this whole monstrosity is that his actor is a real Native American.

Frick. he fricking kinda resembles John Redcorn.

      >Victor Aaron Ramirez (September 11, 1956 – September 4, 1996) was an American actor of Yaqui descent. He was the original voice of John Redcorn on King of the Hill, which was taken over by Jonathan Joss in the show's second season following Aaron's death
      >Victor Aaron Ramirez was born on September 11, 1956, in Odessa, Texas. His parents were of Yaqui ancestry. Growing up, Aaron grew up in a mobile home with his brothers and sisters in a poor family. After graduating from high school in Austin, Aaron got married and worked for a casino. Afterward, he moved to California and became an actor.
      >Aaron died in a car accident on September 4, 1996, at the age of 39, seven days before his 40th birthday, when his car was struck at an intersection by a truck that ran the red light. The King of the Hill episode "The Order of the Straight Arrow" is dedicated to his memory.

Wonder what he would think of the treatment of his character in later seasons?

F, the most fricked up thing is that he's a great success for native american /first nation actors. I cannot respect Letterkenny and the off-shoot Shoresy for the inclusion of them in it. I know some that sounds racist as hell, but I mean it with a lot of love for the portrayal
