The jokes aren't good, it's all about controlling the energy of the room. If someone gives a shit set and you come out after it will be much harder to make the audience laugh, if you follow up a set that did well it will be much easier. If members of the audience already like you they will simply laugh when they're supposed to for that reason and others will laugh just because everyone else is laughing and they're matching the energy of the room
It's more about prompting them to laugh than telling jokes that make them laugh, if the energy is right they'll do as they're prompted. It's just manipulating the crowd conformity that occurs when you have a bunch of people together sharing an experience, the jokes are never actually funny. I listen to comedians on interviews or podcasts and find them really funny but their standup is always shit
