I don’t really mind Korra being stupid/unlikable. What gets me with her show is the shitty spot her finale left the franchise in. The next avatar will be in a modern day steampunk setting with spirits running amok, the wuxia vibe of ATLA is never coming back

I never got people's revulsion at advancing technology in the atla universe.
The original series was already at a ww1 level of tech what with ironclad ships, airships, tanks, trains, mass industrialization, etc if anything the technology leap in Korra was conservative.

I like planes, cars, even more ww1 type ships and fricking mechs in Korra. The problem with Korra was that it was TOO dedicated to the set 1920's aesthetic, while AtLA had tech all over the place. There was tech that was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci sketches, air balloons, and a giant fricking drill, it was more fantastical and its own thing. And somehow AtLA still kept an "ancient" feeling to it.
Korra also started veering into being more "western" and losing that Chinese flare, which will become more apparent when it's set in more modern times.
Again this is like not understanding why people wouldn't want space ships in LotR

Korra is the only character where the "Is she stupid?" plot criticism is not only valid, but is actually the most likely explanation for the scenario.

What annoys me about the show and Korra is that every critique plus and criticism about both character AND show will forever be overshadowed by the hamfisted lesbian romance that they threw in at the literal last second. Don't like it? You just don't like gay people, as if korra being a girl wasn't evnough of a shield from critique.
The show will always be held as "Look, a gay romance show that was always totally planned" and a beacon of representation. I don't even dislike Korra, I found her very pitiable and was rooting for her in S4 even, but holy fricking shit the pall of the show being lauded (by normies) for having her become a fricking dyke - for no fricking reason or buildup - ruins it.

Korra really set up a fascinating contrast to Last Airbender in the first half of season one.

Aang was a relatively weak pacifist that was really good at airbending but pretty shit at everything else. He was highly spiritual and an excellent diplomat, but the world he was born into required a powerful warrior and he had to learn how to be strong and assertive without losing his gentle nature.

Korra, on the other hand, is bending all the elements BUT air like a pro from childhood and is a martial prodigy with power to spare. She's lacking in diplomatic tact and is not at all spiritual, but the world she's born into requires a diplomat and tactician that can navigate more complicated matters of state and subterfuge rather than a one-woman army.

Which is why it's so disappointing that Korra doesn't actually become more spiritual or cautious or diplomatic, she just PUNCHES HARDER YAMATO DAMASHIIIIII

It's absolutely what they intended to do, but also they were writing an action cartoon for children where they needed a cool fight scene at the end of each season and it could never get too complicated. It's hard to do that character arc in that genre/

I've seen it put as Aang was a person who had to learn to be the Avatar and Korra was an Avatar who had to learn to be a person, sadly the show dropped the ball massively on making anything interesting of that.

        >Which is why it's so disappointing that Korra doesn't actually become more spiritual or cautious or diplomatic, she just PUNCHES HARDER YAMATO DAMASHIIIIII
Sort of true, she does noticably mellow out between seasons 3 and 4 but it's all off screen, and her defeat of Kuvira is sort of different from just punching her, (technically she pulls her into the spirit world and scares Kuvira into compliance).
Also fun fact Kuvira is the only bad guy/ threat of the season who Korra actually defeats herself
        >Amon
She merely shoves him out a window and then he ruins his own reputation by waterbending in front of everyone, before later blowing himself and his brother up.
        >Unalaq
That was mainly Rava and Jinora pulling a deus ex machina
        >Zaheer
That was all Jinora and the airbenders, Korra was out cold at the time

          >Also fun fact Kuvira is the only bad guy/ threat of the season who Korra actually defeats herself
Another fun fact, Korra with the Avatar State never defeats a single opponent, unless you count her winning an air scooter race with literal children by using it. The only time the Avatar State is used to successfully neutralize a threat in the entire show is when Aang uses it against Yakone in the flashback. She may as well have not even had it.

Which makes sense, since Ozai is just a very good firebender and Aang can draw on the combined knowledge of thousands of years of master benders. But still

            >The only time the Avatar State is used to successfully neutralize a threat in the entire show is when Aang uses it against Yakone in the flashback

I'm pretty sure this is intentional since the avatar state is so OP it could kill almost anyone pretty easily. Even in ATLA Aang only used it to blow out ozai(and the fish thing i guess) and if he got it before nothing would have been a threat. Korra got it way earlier so they had to kneecap her. She had it in season 2 but didn't use it much because most of the season is shit or requires political solutions. In season 3 Zaheer had to engineer scenarios to not go against her without having some kind of massive advantage because he knew she would be able to kill him. In season 4 she couldn't go into it for half the season and when she could Kuvira had mechs and armies and shit. You can almost feel the writers being upset they gave her full access at the end of season 1 when they thought it was going to be a one and done.

honestly a LOT of the series' issues just stem from the fact that it was originally planned as a very short series that just kept getting expanded and they very clearly did not have a plan to tell a story over that many episodes like they did with ATLA.

Obviously it had more and more specific issues too, but I do feel like if they'd gone into this one with the intention to keep it going toward a clear goal like they did with ATLA it would have solved a lot of the problems.

Yea I mostly agree. The avatar state stuff is just a really big example because a lot of the problems with it would have been solved by pushing it later on.

They managed it well in the original show by making it so Aang didn't have control over it for two seasons, and not having access to it at all in the third until the final battle. When Aang gives Korra her bending back, she also gains full control over the Avatar State somehow, even though she never went through the whole process with the chakras and shit. Despite being spiritually moronic and that being her first time speaking with any of her past lives ever, that gives her full control over the Avatar State when it didn't need to, and it would have plugged up that writing hole. Even then, the whole conceit of Korra as a show is that it stars a punch first ask questions never meathead who needs to solve problems diplomatically, something the show also sucks at, so her having an OP Avatar State wouldn't even help her all that much. At least not until the point in every single season where the big evil fricker who might actually have a point about the world at large is actually just a crazy psycho who we can deplatform without consequence, so now it's a good idea to just punch him/her to death, but then there would be no tension since Korra is supposed to be good at beating the shit out of people, so we just kneecap Korra for forced tension and have some deus ex machina, usually Jinora, solve the problem for her.

They had such an open field to make all her problems political and not solvable with asskicking. The non-bender rights movement, the civil war masterminded by an arms dealer, the anti-monarchists, the reclamation of the fire nation colonies... they wrote all the set-up, clearly with some kind of intent, and never committed. It's not like she couldn't still have cool fights along the way.

Spiritual problems and journeys as well. Crisis of faith on whether Avatar was really what could help the world in this new age of intermingling.

They even introduced common people getting possessed by spirits which is what makes the Avatar so powerful...only to quickly get rid of it so that it couldn't possibly be a threat either. It's like they they were stumbling blind in Smaug's hoard and never landed on any treasure somehow, I wish I could pelt them with water balloons every day for the rest of my life

I think that technically tracks. Not to be all "the devil shakes when a good man goes to war" or anything, but if you're easy to anger it's usually not as big a deal, so in Korra's case it's just not overwhelming enough to make her go Avatar State.

Out of all the critiques of Korra, the tech and the bending ones always seemed dumb to me.
Like you said, Fire Nation was already advanced so it makes sense that in the new peace tech would advance rapidly, and from a design standpoint, putting things with 1920 can be justified by trying to do something different. I do agree that they could've tried incorporating bending more prominently in the new tech instead of just making it like the real world.
And talking about bending, I never got the complaint about lighting and other forms of advanced bending becoming normalized, in my opinion it enriches the setting by showing the main system advancing, kinda like how a good high school math student would be some kind of genius in the past.

        Anonymous

I think it's because there's still in ATLA there's balance between the tech and the martial arts wuxia-ness of ATLA and the steampunk tech. Whereas they didn't bring back the same choreographers for Korra and downplayed/retconned a lot of the motions and martial arts spiritualism for bending so that Korra could be an instant expert. As a result the techniques go from being a skill someone has to learn and develop and have the right mindset for to just superpowers that you get because you were born lucky.

Bending in the original show had a spiritual "chi" vibe. It's one thing for lightning bending to become common, it's another for people to be finding inner peace and cultivating their yin and yang through ancient shaolin techniques in order to do their job at the local power plant. If those aspects of bending are being forgotten or discarded, that should be treated as an actual part of the story, but since it wasn't it felt like we lost some of the first show's neat worldbuilding and gained nothing in return. And not for the last time, either.

I wanted to like Korra, but just found the setting not as fun, and the characters not as likeable so I stopped after the first season. From what I've heard, I made the right choice.
Also, I heard there supposed to be another Avatar animation in the works that takes place not too soon after Korra, so how did she die?

This isn't an excuse. They knew how many episodes they had and the first two seasons suck. They made a bunch of filler plots that cut into the fricking story. Amon should never have been a thing season 1. With the amount of shit they wasted time on, it would have taken two seasons to tell the story well without the fricking garbage we got.

I'm so sick of people going but season 3 and 4 are good because they aren't much better.

Everyone keeps thinking the next Avatar will be born in a 1980s futuristic world. But in truth, I think Korra being a moron that keeps the Spirit Gates open has set the world back.

Spirits are buttholes with no regard for human life, the Spirit Vines cannot be controlled and before the gates were sealed humanity was constantly getting fricked over by Spirits.

I honestly believe, Humanity is going to become more clustered into cities again with the outside world being small villages living in nature. Spirits are rampant and so you have humans finding ways to ward them off and fight against nature.

I expect the major conflict the next avatar will have to deal with is a outright war between humans and spirits, only be cause of advancing technology humans can actually put up a decent fight.

    >"Is she stupid?"
This is answered clearly and repeatedly in basically every episode of the series.

Yes, she is fricking stupid, canonically. She's basically Sokka if he had breasts and was the avatar, but without his tactical mind. She's dumb, horny, good in a fight, but utterly incapable of critical thinking in most situations.

      >She's basically Sokka
      Huh?
Sokka is the most intelligent charecter in the show what the frick are you talking about. He's the while reason the avatar gang even survived past the second season. Unless you mean he acts like a buffoon here and they're because he doesn't take himself that seriously. Except korra actually does take herself seriously after she falls flat on her face.

Sokka was the smartest character in the group. Even in the first season he was working with the inventor, coming up with plans, and managed things like supplies. Just because someone acts like a clown for laughs isnt the same as being genuinely stupid, like Korra is.

The worst thing about Korra's setting wasn't just the way bending became boring and cheap, it was the fact that it was ultimately pointless. The show barely even used its own 'industrial revolution' setting in any proper capacity besides a few setpieces and gadgets. Most of the series was just rather lame melodrama mixed with marvel-tier worldbuilding about spirits.

Lesbianism is not a problem in the series, that is hot. The writers were pointing that Mako failed in his attempt to have a threesome. Forcing Korra and Asami going bisexuals or lesbians between the two. And sadly this is a reality. Women tends to experiment bisexualism or lesbianism when men are toxic macho rapists or incapable to grasp how to satisfy them sexually or they get bored of men. So the lesson is: know well the woman you are trying to date if she is fine with a threesome with a balanced likeness for women and men, she is the right one.

I really wish they'd factored this into the story more. The Blue Lotus just kinda exists in the background most of the time, but it would've helped things a lot if we actually felt the presence of these people who have been controlling her entire life.

Especially since some of the Blue Lotus guys were clearly regular, down-to-earth people who loved listening to pro bending on the radio for fun. You'd think Korra would be friends with those guys, but her relationship with the Blue Lotus is a total blank.
