They said this after they won a battle due to a literal superweapon, it had nothing to do with their battle prowess.

There are quadrillions of dothrakis in the lore, literally
Which makes the idea that they managed to cross the strait with a few dozen ships laughable

Well Dany is special cause hers magically regenerate after every battle. They all died vs the Walkers then are fully ready to attack Kings Landing lmao

I do wonder if one could interpret the dothraki as being much more feared than actually capable. Westeros has never seen them after all, they could be imagining all sorts of horror stories. The cities of essos also fear them (and there are anecdotal stories of their prowess), but at the same time seem to buy them off easily, suggesting they're not such a big threat after all.
Also remember roberts reasoning about would happen, not that the dothraki would storm the castles but that they would raid to the point where the people would willingly surrender to viserys (who robert thinks would lead them, a clear misconception betraying his lack of understanding of the dothraki.)

      >I do wonder if one could interpret the dothraki as being much more feared than actually capable

There's a lot of weird stuff going on with the Dothraki in the books and the TV show. For instance, I cannot think of a single instance where they made siege weapons of any kind, except maybe like small log rams. If even that because Dothraki basically refuse to fight as infantry. Yet they somehow managed to storm Essaria, the Sarnori city-states, etc.

Then we have tails of how apocalyptic they are in battle, but their main advantage seems to just be numbers and bum rushing banzai charges. Every time an enemy refuses to fight them on their own terms they either lose or leave. Note the Unsullied at Qohor, where the Dothraki just frontal charged liked phalanxes until they were all dead or exhausted, or even their final battle vs Sarnor, where they were being swept from the field by a chariot charge until their reinforcements surrounded them.

Like yeah they are tough fighters but they don't really seem that Invincible unless you play directly into their hands

        Anonymous

You’re right that their moron tactics won’t work well during a siege, but their sheer numbers mean they could besiege multiple places at once and still be capable of fighting off reinforcements. They would strip the land around them dry of resources too, and the thought of 100k rapist horse men invading your country is pretty terrifying. They would probably be less useful in the north but they would also have mercenary companies with them to help with that, even before the dragons they’d be formidable but with dragons they have a pretty good chance of conquering the entire continent. It’s already way more resources than Aegon had

It makes no sense. There's that one story where the Unsullied got their reputation by defeating a huge hoard of Dothraki but all they did was sit there in a phalanx and let the idiots run onto their spears over and over until they all died or gave up. Like a big wall with some spikes could do what they did. Seems like almost everyone in Essos is just a dumb pussy who can't fight.

      >They're an entire army of calvary

because of this i guess? they didn't show any proper tactics, but neither did any other army in the show so that's not really an argument

      >because of this i guess?

Ok, but the Mongols didn't do this as disparate tribes that kept slaughtering each other over skins skins wine. I haven't even seen the Dothraki use bows.

        >Ok, but the Mongols didn't do this as disparate tribes that kept slaughtering each other over skins skins wine.
well they got united, but yeah not very credible that the book/show united them just cause a prostitute got a couple of lizard pets
        >I haven't even seen the Dothraki use bows.
yeah, the tactics are terrible overall on the show, but they are clearly supposed to represent something like what the mongols did to medieval europe

          Eastern europe, mostly russia.

The Mongols would spare anyone with engineering or specialist skills on condition they served them. Sieges weren't a problem until they got deep into Europe.

Rape is an act of dominance of a more powerful person over a less powerful. People of colour are systematically disadvantaged and underempowered, therefore they cannot "rape" white people.

Right? Dany is like 'I'm gonna take control of all of Westeros and everyone will love me!' Even though she'd have to destroy tons of castles, farmlands, villages, kill lots of honorable decent men and rape/enslave their women.

Dany being a delusional moron is one of the things they unintentionally got right. She upends the economies of the cities she conquers so badly she leaves the slaves begging to return to slavery.

  10. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

They glossed over a bit in the show but the threat isn't from the dothraki, they weren't anymore a threat to westeros than the mongols were to europe. The issue was that Targaryen loyalists would use the opportunity to start a civil war and that they would be unified under Dany with a single goal of destroying the crown whereas the Baratheon allies would be divided between defending the crown and their own lands

Huns used heavy armor aswell so did every steppe military, GRRM just thinks Steppe armies were 100% light skirmishers for some reason.

The Dothraki use the same tactics Japs and Soviets did during WW2. Just charge at the enemy with thousands of men and hope you overwhelm them. The funny thing is, the only enemies they even face in their grasslands are poor villages of sheep herders and tiny kingdoms with barely any force to defend themselves with.

grrrm was too busy thinking up tax polices that he never put in the book to remember that mongols used armor and heavy cavalry charges

other than that i believe their main advantrage was how fast their entire army could move. both because of all their horses and because they were accustomed to eating things that didnt require making fires at camp, like raw meat, milk, and horse blood shit. at times they moved so quickly that euros thought they were facing two completely different armies which is one of the things that lead to the belief that they had massive numbers

Horse archers like longbows are a meme, they weren't used in isolation but as a part of a combined arms force.
Zerg rushes never worked even in medieval/ancient warfare, as seen in the battle of Watling Street when a handful of Romans BTFO a screaming horde led by a woman.

i dont know what you mean. horse archers were used very effectively by lots of the most powerful early empires, they arent a meme. early empires didnt even have the tech to do heavy cavalry charges
