Kids take up a lot of time and energy out of their parents. Some people don't have time for content creation anymore after they have kids. Additionally, parenthood changes the way you look at the world. Tycho and Buckley have talked about it in the past.
I think that becoming a parent can make an artist more sensitive, which can then result in their content becoming more safe/restrained, which may piss off their audience (especially if the artist was liked for their edge or black comedy).

I have consistently noticed than any time a creator has a kid they immediately lose their edge and their skills start to degrade. I don't think a creator has ever really improved from the transition into parenthood, It's fricking sad

        Anonymous

In terms of their creative output? Yes, they get worse.

But the creator themselves would say they get better. Because their kids have given them fulfillment, meaning in life apart from work, a thing to put effort into that will yield something money can't buy. The Penny Arcade guys did exactly that. Plus they got on medication that unfricked their brains and made them happier. Unfortunately the anger the meds took away was what gave them the edge to be funny. And then all the people they (i.e. Robert) hired who were also funny and witty left, including Robert, to do their own businesses and I don't even know who is there anymore because I don't even follow these guys anymore.

I'm glad they're happy, they deserve it. They were one of the few Internet people who spun what they did into something good and big. I'm sad they aren't funny anymore but it wasn't their fricking fault nerd culture went to absolute shit. It's not like they forced nerd culture to boil down to the lowest common denominator for maximum revenue. The people who fricking destroyed nerd culture don't even fricking know what Penny Arcade was or don't cite them regularly. Cape comics characters were about to fricking die and now they are going to be immortal, basically poisoning the entire fricking comic landscape forever worse than when they fired Karen Berger from Vertigo. Shit, Neil Gaiman seems wholly intent on producing dogshit adaptations of every amazing thing he's done, setting the precedent that even his stories aren't worth adapting given how little return they bring in. The Penny Arcade guys to their credit don't harm the industry with their shit comics unlike subhuman representatives like Kevin Smith who is probably 99% negative impact on nerd hobbies.

No they should be allowed to do that. Your tournament organizer should have age brackets. This is actually a thing that used to be a HUGE issue in Pokemon. When Wizards of the Coast ran the show they didn't want to do age brackets because they wanted kids to grow up and play MTG, but they weren't, so eventually they just got rid of the seniors division. It's one of the main reasons that Nintendo and Creatures parted ways with Wizards of the Coast, since they were basically kneecapping their earnings.

The issue with the dickwolves was that they were simultaneously trying to run a black humor webcomic that had a "if it offends you, don't read it, homosexual" stance and a big expo marketing itself as a nice and welcoming place for everyone. And when pussies started sending them emails about how they didn't feel safe attending their expo, they realized it wasn't really possible to do both.

Considering the tone of the "apology" strip, it's pretty clear they also thought you had to be fricking moronic to think it supported rape.

And then they backed down, which for me was the death of the strip.
Like, fricking morons happen to be in the majority, because it takes so little effort to be moronic.
But being right is not decided by democratic process, only an enormous moron would believe that.

That's just typical gen x capitulation. In theory they're jaded, too-cool-for-school nihilists with no loyalty to both sides, but in practice they always cave to the current thing for fear of actually being outcasts

Then a couple years later Gabe was still salty about it, it blew up again, people were boycotting PAX - not just tumblerinas and games journalists, but big companies. That's not fear of being outcasts, that's a legitimate commercial concern for a venture dependent on public interest.

I re-read the whole thing every few years and I'll say that the peak was 2006, specifically the Armadeadon arc. Felt like a real culmination of everything the comic was about and prominently featured all of the side characters in supporting roles. After this point the comic just doesn't feel the same, those side characters get slowly phased out in favor of their IRL friends and family, and the jokes involving violence between Tycho and Gabe disappear as well. It's like seeing your family dog get neutered and you slowly watch it get fatter and more passive until it just dies one day.

Penny Arcade was ALWAYS at its best when it could turn hyper-violent at the flip of a switch. That and profanity but used in clever and incisive ways rather than being lazy with it.

I feel like the very best of Penny Arcade is also the very best of Millennial humor. So many of their good strips have a very specifically Millennial slant of funny, but it's done well, rather than the numerous instances of it being done poorly.

There's also the fact that it is, well, a video game comic. And playing PC and console video games from your single digit years well into your twenties is pretty much the quintessential Millennial coming of age experience. We all did it.

Frankly I guess I'm not surprised that even the best of Penny Arcade doesn't resonate with some Zoomers. It's not quite for their generation.

There's been a lot of "which generation is worst" threads on multiple boards on Cinemaphile over the past few days, and one thing I keep seeing, which it's good to keep in mind, is that Gen X is stealthily responsible for a LOT of the ways things are shitty right now. We b***h about the Boomers, but the Boomers are in their 80s, 70s, and late 60s now. The Boomers are starting to retire, have BEEN retiring for the last decade. Whereas Gen X is in their 40s, 50s, and 60s. They're the ones in actual decision-making positions in Hollywood, at DC and Marvel, at the networks, at publishing houses, fricking everywhere. Yet people keep skipping over them, going straight from bashing Boomers to bashing Millennials. Who the frick decided we got to let Gen X off the hook?

          >Who the frick decided we got to let Gen X off the hook?
I think we should just stop blaming broad swaths of generations/people because the people who do that generally just need villains to acquire attention and power. It's how fascists behave - pick an enemy, define yourself as what the enemy isn't. In this case rile up the younger generations against an older generation, it's easy and doesn't solve anything. It's easy to think about differences in age and not actually address the real problems, which is again, what fascists do.

You're replying to a person who points out some of the worst offenders actually responsible for it going to shit. Their age has nothing to do with it.

Nearly every fricking argument in this world seems like it is between two people arguing over a thing they both have entirely different definitions for.

I almost had my face kicked in for calling someone a sissy because apparently among people who have been incarcerated that term means someone who took it in the ass in prison. Forget fricking trigger warnings any time there's a dispute about anything I just have to stop and make sure we're still talking about the same fricking thing because words don't mean the same shit for people anymore.

You answered your own question. The people upset about this have a totalitarian mindset. Totalitarians are typically completely humorless too, so they aren't equipped to even realize the point of the joke. I mean, how many comedians from totalitarian societies do you know? The Nazi or Soviet equivalent of Charlie Chaplin? Doesn't exist. The Nazis ended up banning a milquetoast comedy show because they were afraid that the audience might sympathize with the villain.

They were the first big webcomic, and the first big internet thing in general, depending on how you look at it. The fact that they were young members of the "in crowd", that is to say gamers making a gamer comic, helped with that too. This was during a time where a lot of people regarded the internet, or even computers in general, as a hobby at best and a waste of time at worst. It slots in with that general denial of [new thing], and people rallying around a popular, relatively high quality example of [new thing]. Kinda like how everyone remembers comix for Crumb.
