Nothing about it made sense. What idiot designed a colony ship that needs to be landed to inspect a planet? They had no means of calling for help? (Don’t tell me that a movie with time travel and faster than light space travel drew the line of realism at FTL communication.) There seemed to be a society that trained the space rangers, so where were they?

Lightyear shit hit Goodwill and Value Village less than a year after release, I'd go back a week later after some random dump, and it'd still be there, untouched. Parents take their kids to these places for cheap toys, and Disney stuff especially is what they go for, but even when they practically gave this shit away, it never moved

This wasn't a movie for kids, it was a movie for Disney adults who grew-up with Toy Story, but also used words like "fridging" to describe why Bo Peep needed to come back as a detached c**t in TS4

Reading through this thread I think this movie is extremely overhated by people who didn't watch it. I thought it was a cool sci-fi story that used time dilation and time travel in an interesting way. I don't give a shit about the "character assassination" of Buzz Lightyear of all fricking characters, or a lesbian couple with 5 seconds of screen time that didn't feel forced or shoved in your face.

One thing that was memorable for me was the part where they showed how much food had changed in the century he'd missed from time dilation. The troopers he's with make a sandwich with a single slice of bread inbetween two slices of meat, and when he points out how weird that is they explain why it's superior to his idea of a sandwich and that they think he's the weird one. Food actually does change a lot over time, and lots of foods that were common a century ago would now be weird or gross. But it's not something that I'd ever seen brought up like that before.

However, I think the film should have just been a new IP rather than being the Buzz Lightyear movie. It gained nothing from the ip, was completely different from the established characters, used none of the existing lore or story to subvert it in interesting ways, and created expectations it was never interested in meeting.

It's extremely basic sci-fi. There's nothing wrong with taking an existing concept, but they did nothing interesting with it on top of having characters that are both extremely boring and extremely ugly.

Even as a standalone IP it would have sucked. They fundamentally needed to change the setting and the characters because it has a super shit foundation.

I liked the first act where he travels farther and farther into the future. Once that stops it just becomes generic sci-fi and the twist is really stupid. I didn't hate it, but it's definitely the worst Pixar movie.
