‘Lilo & Stitch’ Director Got ‘Frustrated’ by ‘Frozen’ Praise

>“To be clear, I think ‘Frozen’s’ great,” Sanders recently told The New York Times while celebrating “Lilo & Stitch’s” 20th anniversary. “But it was a little bit frustrating for me because people were like, ‘Finally, a nonromantic relationship with these two girls,’ and I thought, ‘We did that! That has absolutely been done before.’”

I can't believe that people think that Stitch sold anything close to Frozen.
Frozen sold 2/3s of what ALL of the other Disney Princesses did combined. And the others had a 100 year headstart.
Frozen sold so well that it's not even under the Disney Princess line, it's just under its own Frozen line.

Disregarding Pixar movies, Lilo and Stitch and Pirates carried Disney through the late Eisner years. Stitch merch was so huge that the parks effectively treated him as a new member of the Mickey gang. Yeah, the franchise was mainly on TV and video, but that was the norm back then since the core Disney animation studio only rarely did sequels.

Well I think the success of Lilo & Stitch is nothing to scoff at. The original movie alone was fantastic and they got a bunch more content added later at a time when their TV projects still had a budget.
His artstyle will be cemented in the minds of children for years to come, it's been mimicked and payed homage too for over 20 years now. Franchises like Ice Age are looked at with apathy after so many years and ones like Frozen are replaceable. The Lilo & Stitch director has reached heights few can only dream of.

Modern science lets lesbians have babies, too. Gay marriage was argued because it meant more gay couples would adopt, but it turns out as soon as the technology became available, gay couples were willing to pay to have their cells converted into sperm to have gay/lesbian babies with both parents' DNA and their adoption rates have been dropping as the procedure becomes more available. The largest adopters have always been and remain straight Christian couples.

It literally is available and it actually is just that easy. Taking a "blank" ovum or sperm cell from literally any other human alove and injecting the DNA from a zygote is piss-easy, just difficult to do at a large scale and super against the law due to scientific ethics preventing what would be in this case "human testing".

Actually it's pretty hard. Fun fact it's easier just to manipulate a stem cell than snipping DNA, and also has no risks of weird mutant babies.

It's also easier to create eggs than sperm.

This. Lilo and Stitch can be enjoyed by anybody, Frozen is only liked by kids and coomers. If you are an adult watching Lilo and Stitch then you probably saw it as a kid or heard its really good, if you’re watching Frozen as an adult you either have kids or your pants are down. Frozen is a terrible movie for anyone above the age of 10, L&S is a timeless classic.

Lilo and Stitch was a product of the early 2000’s experimental period, one which soured many on the brand as people had become accustomed to the “enchantment” angle of musicals and fantasy. In the eyes of many, Lilo and Stitch probably felt more like a Dreamworks film with its modern setting, music, and more sarcastic wacky humor. So the dynamic between Lilo and Nani, while moving, didn’t register as groundbreaking because the film was non standard Disney anyway. Frozen on the other hand was stuffed with the familiar hallmarks of Disney, fantasy, princesses, and music. It came out on the heels of two other princess flicks that played the love dynamics straight, so to have the finale be about non romantic love being the solution was seen as groundbreaking in that context.

tl;dr it’s because Frozen was a princess movie breaking its conventions, Lilo and Stitch meanwhile wasn’t conventional to start with.

Except Frozen isn't the object of nonstop critical acclaim. Its success is because Let It Go was a massive hit song and the character designs translated into merchandise better. Giving Elsa a sister was a stroke of genius because the film now had two princess characters to turn into dolls, costumes, accessories, etc. It certainly taps into the sibling market in a way other films didn't.
Yet nobody is going back to Frozen because of any merits to its writing.

I think you're neglecting the real reason being their relationship was the focal point. While a big part, Stitch and Lilo were the focal point of .... Lilo & Stitch. Ontop of that it's 1. a princess movie 2. a climate more suited to make a mountain out of molehills especially in overhyped media.

        Anonymous

You can say they're sisters, but like Nani is totally Lilo's mom.

          Anonymous

That was kind of a major issue for them? Nani basically HAD to become Lilo's mom, which meant giving up any freedom she had as a sister, she gave up her hobby/potentially future career in surfing, gave up her availability to date the guy she likes, and has to devote herself to any crap job she can while also raising her young weird ass sister without any help from anyone else.

Nani's life is fricking tragic and the fact that she was forced to become 'the mom' is one of the main reasons her relationship with Lilo splintered so much, because both of them know she can't really do it and the change is extremely awkward for both of them.

            Anonymous

Feel like Frozen and Lilo and Stitch end up dealing with two different scenarios. A sister who barely has time to be anything but the responsible one and the one who's never around. Lilo and Stitch explores their's better, but that's because Frozen was framed more towards evil sister redemption then the frickery that was the rewrites. Meanwhile Lilo can focus on the fraying tensions that are defused when Stitch brings them together again.

            Anonymous

Nani does not think of Lilo as some kind of burden.

              Anonymous

She doesn't want to but the fact remains that she DID have to give up her goals and freedoms to care for Lilo. She does this because she loves her, obviously, but it's clearly exhausting both physically and emotionally for her in the movie, especially because, again, both Nani and Lilo know that Nani can't really just 'become' a mom, they're sisters and a lot of their relationship drama is them trying to find some way to salvage that sisterly relationship/love despite the changes that have taken place and how different their lives are now.

But in this case, it doesn't work when it makes more sense to view it literally rather than figuratively. Families that suffer sudden deaths also tend to fracture as well. Not to mention by this point Disney didn't seem afraid of ambiguous single mothers, if they wanted Nani to be a single mom they probably could've gone for it.

Good theory but I doubt it. There was only 18 months from the premiere of Lilo and Stitch: The Series and American Dad. I don't think a Disney cartoon based on a Disney film would be on Seth's conscience unlike say something on Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon. Roger only became a crossdresser in later seasons as well after he had to go out in public in disguise in some first season episodes. The writers probably really enjoyed writing Roger cosplaying as any zany character he could imagine- it gave his character a whole new angle.

Lilo and stitch did the sisters relationship story so much better than Frozen its not even funny.

Seriously, Elsa and Anna had almost no actual relationship. 90% of it just seemed to be Anna being delusional and projecting the friendship they had when they were basically toddlers onto Elsa as an adult and excusing everything she does, while Elsa pretty much only pushed Anna away at every turn, until the last minute where 'sisterly love' just magically cures everything.

Nothing in Frozen beats the emotional weight of this scene. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0BYbPjlujc&ab_channel=MadMike
