Every single piece of media that "doesn't try to please fans" has been absolute garbage, whilst media that does try to please fans is usually good enough.

It's not about artistic integrity at this point, it's just observed fact. Anbody who sees a beloved piece of fiction and tries to inject their own ideas into it was never in a position for their own ideas to have any appeal anyway.

to be fair, although this movie predates woke-shit by a fair few years, but the Constantine movie with Keanu was fantastic, it threw away most of the comic source material and it was still great. I saw bits of it at work recently, people just stopped and stared at the crazy visuals and the intensity of some of the scenes.

But thats like the only one i can think of.

The scene where he's wrestling on the ground with the walking mass of bugs guy is great. Watched the behind the scenes of Constantine, and Keanu is actually wrestling with thin air and nothing else, but he sells that shit.

The Matrix Reloaded is one of the greatest movies ever made because it gave us MORE of what we wanted. People loved kung-fu man, they loved Smith, they turned that shit up to ELEVEN by carefully studying the fan response to the original, they gave us more slowmotion, more smiths, more kung-fu, more matrix

That my friend is why The Matrix Reloaded is remembered as the greatest movie of all time. Because they listened to the fans.

you aim to please the most critical and obsessive of your viewerbase because that ensures quality
as a consequence and by passing the quality control of those hardcore fans, the ignorant masses will also recognize its quality (even if they're too dumb to understand why) and will ride the wave of popularity if word of mouth spreads enough

No, I don't believe that. And I know YOU don't believe that these people are auteurs utilizing the ip to further explore themes within it. By way of rule, an adaptation should first be faithful to the source and then consider adding something, and that is a choice that deservedly should be harshly scrutinized. Both of us know that they want put gays and black people in it just for the sake of it, and probably deconstruct the brotherhood of steel as uni dimensional racist fascists and say the wasteland belongs to women because men caused the great war. I'm half joking but there's probably a 80% chance this is the actual plot of the show.
Anyway stop being a dishonest troony and remember there's a reason most people don't even know there's a Stalker book while shit like ghostbusters 2016 was memory holed.

Because the subsection of Fallout fans who throw tantrums on the internet is dwarfed by the amount of people who played through fallout 3 once and enjoyed it, and that population is dwarfed by the amount of people who have heard of fallout and are maybe familiar with the setting but have not played the games.

If it was successful initially on its own merits that would mean that the original concept was good. If you're not pleasing the fans who enjoyed the original work then you're just taking the existing surface level concept and imagery to make something that probably isn't all that interesting on its own

      How to please the fans:

don't touch the lore, just use it and set it off to the side so it's not in the way. Is it really that hard? What happens is you have these "auteurs" who think themselves above it and try to "elevate" the source material. It almost never works. Especially from American productions. You'd think they would open their peepers and take a look at the long history of failures and just decide not to step in it, but they also never learn. Fallout tv series should have been in texas or florida or london or fricking somewhere that the games weren't. Instead they have to drag out elements of the series that shouldn't be touched all so they can shit on them.

The only way you can adapt something from a book or video game to movies or TV show is make as true to the source as possible. Every movie of show that followed as close to the source as possible has been praised, but every single one that strayed too far failed.

The LOTR movies left things out more than added things in or changed stuff. The barrow-downs, Bombadil and Goldberry, and the Scouring of the Shire were not necessary in order to tell the story.
Now imagine a ‘Lord of the Rings’ movie trilogy that featured characters that never existed in the books having an adventure that was never written about. That!s what Amazon is doing with Fallout and it’s bullshit.

The Shining strayed so much Stephen King hates it. I don't think that's inherently an issue if the adapter is just as, if not more astute a writer than the creator of the sourse material, then it can be improved.
However, if the entire reason for the adaptation is the success and huge fanbase of the source material, then it's very fooling to stray from it. The whole reason your doing it is to appeal to a pre-existing fanbase and you're just not going to cater to them, just setting yourself up for failure. Especially when your writers are garbage.

        Anonymous

The Shining is a story, not a setting or IP. Adapting a story is one thing. Buying an IP as a stalking horse for your Mary Sues, self-inserts and Powerful Minority Individuals is the issue here.

It’s why I’m cautiously optimistic about Cavill’s 40k adaptation. I think we can probably rely on him to stop the cancer that is creeping wokeshit.

    Actual quote he said:

    >"It's kind of a fool's errand to try to figure out how to make [other] people happy... You've got to make yourself happy. And I've made myself very happy with the show."

They twisted the quote to make it more inflammatory.

That's worse. As a show runner, your entire purpose is to make other people happy and being happy with the final product yourself is just an obvious prerequisite.

Nobody can get their original script funded anymore. So they have to launder it through an existing IP with a sizable fan base. I think FX is the only network giving big budgets to novel ideas anymore. Or else Shogun would have to call itself a [Samurai Anime] adaptation.

fool's errand? It's literally the easiest thing they can do. Everything is already laid out for them. Fans don't care if its the same thing literally 1:1 to the video game, they want to see it. The thing these idiots don't get is that when you feed the fans what they want, you also capture ALL the other people who would never play the game but love to watch TV. First season of GoT proves this, no one wanted to watch a fantasy show about dragons back then.

this is what I've been saying. The games are already decently written. You have the gamer audience guaranteed and you'll introduce normies to it and they'll almost certainly enjoy it too.
The clown world insane reality that sounds like a conspiracy theory is that the people making these shows hate the material, they hate the original audience for the material, and they unironically use it to push for their politics, and studios comply both to not get cancelled on twitter, and to have a scapegoat for when the show inevitably fails they blame the racist review bombers.

        Anonymous

anon. the fallout franchise has already been raped inside out to appeal to normies. there is no such thing as a "gamer" anymore. Everyone plays video games.

the idea the existent audience will automatically embrace [new entry] that strips out everything appealing about the franchise and replaces it with Black folk is automatically false. this has never once worked. you either embrace, fully, what made the original successful or you're wasting everyone's time.

There isn’t an argument. Almost every post in here backing the TV show and its creative team has fundamentally misrepresented the complaints of ‘the fanbase’ in order to try to refute them.
It’s a leaf straight out of the anti-gamergate playbook and it’s depressing to see the same leftist NPCs still being completely unable to have an honest discussion, yet insisting on engaging in debate.

It's funny how you can tell a show will be shit just by the number of women/POC characters in the trailer. Rings of Power and Foundation come to mind as notable examples. Not having lots of ugly browns doesn't guarantee a show will be good of course, but their presence is almost always a guarantee that the show will suck.
