Lord of the Rings The Rings of Power

>But it’s important to remember that Tolkien himself envisioned a number of different people telling stories set in his world. “In his letter to Milton Waldman, it’s letter 131**,” Payne says, “[Tolkien] said he wanted to create an interconnected mythology that still would leave room for ‘other minds and hands wielding paint and music and drama.’ He wanted other artists to come after him and continue to push the boundaries of expanding what Middle-earth could be. It’s a terrifying but awesome responsibility to take the man himself up on his wish and continue his work in building out Middle-earth.**”

    >When is a TV series not a TV series? When it’s a 50-hour movie. “That’s really how we’ve approached The Rings Of Power**,**” says McKay, explaining how — unlike practically all other TV shows, which survive from season to season based on ratings — Amazon have already commissioned five seasons, which the duo have already mapped out in full. “We even know what our final shot of the last episode is going to be,” teases Payne. “The rights that Amazon bought were for a 50-hour show. They knew from the beginning that was the size of the canvas — this was a big story with a clear beginning, middle and end. There are things in the first season that don’t pay off until Season 5.”

Maybe not but they have been typically demanding when it comes to this show already.
It was the Tolkien Estate who chose who would do the English -> Quenya translations for the show, they wouldn't allow Amazon to pick their own people

Sounds like a massive loads of headcanon
The entire family is controlling as frick. The fact that they demanded they be the ones to decide the translator for the show should tell you something, they also had final say on the showrunners
Doesn't mean they will made the right decisions but they have retained a large amount of control considering the money Amazon already payed them

but with the modern climate they cant risk a lawsuit for infringing on the work of tolkien becouse they force black elves down peoples throat

The only want control over the things they care about. Tolkien said that language was the foundation of middle earth so they probably want to make sure its done right. I bet you the show will also heavily features music/song too.

To break it to you, skin tones were not a big thing on Tolkien's mind. He would mention hair/beard colour way more often then he would describe somebody as being pale to swarthy.

Are you moronic? Are you a zoomer too young to have used the Internet before the Trump Administration?
Intersectionality, Gender Theory, Marxism, ANTIFA, the Frankfurt School, "Hate Speech" Laws, CRT, Communism, Postmodernism, Transexualism, etc., were all literally invented in Europe. There presence in America at all is sopleky due to Europeans spreading their cancer.
Europeans also openly acknowledged thus but claimed it was a "GOOD thing" and called you a "redneck" for disagreeing for 50+ years (IRL and then also online, including on Cinemaphile) and couldn't shut up about how America was "too rightwing" and and "racist" and needed to abandon Jesus and guns and embrace Socialism and homosexuality and abortion. That went on for decades, all the way up until about three or four years ago.
Then they turned on a dime the second they couldn't deny the insanity of terrorist shit they had supported anymore and SUDDENLY patriotism and nationalism and Christianity and traditionalism and white suppremacy were suddenly cool and not "for rednecks" and America was bad for NOT having these things AND WAS ALSO the source of all Leftist evagelisim and retroactively always had been.

There is no such thing as a plot that is mapped out in full from beginning to end. Things always change from one season to another. If one character or another receives critical acclaim, one leaves, another one enters, there is always tinkering that changes the roadmap. But that said there is no fricking way they have five seasons even dimly arranged, this shit is going to die season 1 and maybe get a second if it's lucky. Everyday people are not THAT into the series and fans truly hate this abomination. I will be genuinely shocked if this goes past season 2, and mildly surprised if it gets even that.

The Hobbit trilogy will literally look like a masterpiece compared to the TV show. They don't have the rights to the Silmarillion. They can only use the LOTR trilogy and the appendices. That is not enough source material for a 10 hour, let alone a 50 hour TV series.
This will be 100 times worse than the Halo TV show.

Checked. They are allowed to use the LOTR Trilogy including the appendices. So if something is mentioned in BOTH the LOTR books AND the Silmarillion, they can use it. If it's only in the Silmarillion it's verboten.

They will make shit up. They will fill screentime with interpersonal drama, politics or le epic quip.
I'd even wager money that at some point they'll literally say the "The Shadow that bred them can only mock" quote as an "epic win" against the doubtful.

But is the Oath of Feanor in LOTR though? I don't think it is

It only "might" be the Oath of Feanor. I'd have to go and look through the appendices and see if they mention it somewhere, but a "problem" is Tolkien's style of writing. Sometimes he will condense a few years of happenings into a few sentences. Which will leave it open for complete interpretation by the unprofessional and untalented hollywood/amazon writers.
Alternative scenario is they get sued and the entire series really goes up in flames before our eyes. Arguably that timeline would see more justice done than our own.

That's what is legitimately worrying. They don't even have the outline of a plot. Like everybody is supposed to watch because they heard of LOTR already. Like a few images of sword and fantasy world is all that it takes.

They don't need to awe me with their writing in the trailer. But they'd actually need to show that there's a story here. And I doubt we will get one, and I doubt it's going to be very cohesive.

              >Hell even The Lord of The Rings would be too long for a series format
I beg to differ. I think it's actually the perfect length for sort of longer-mini-series territory. The excellent 1981 BBC radioplay (find it and listen to it if you haven't) was originally 26 30-minute episodes, later edited to 13 one-hour episodes. Both versions break up the story quite nicely - about five hours for covering Fellowship, four for Towers and four for Return. It's not much longer than the full EEs.

The WB case over Hobbit left the Tolkien estate effectively bankrupt. They settled with WB in the summer of 2017 and Christopher was forced to resign a few weeks later. Three months later the Amazon deal was signed.

It wasn't set in middle earth you fricking moron it just stole races and monsters from that setting. But it was an entirely different world, based on Wisconsin actually, which is where Gary grew up. And Christopher Tolkien was right to do it. Stealing the creatures was fine but he should have at least changed the names (which he did later anyway, for stuff like treat and Balor). Not that it was much good anyway, because I'm the end most fantasy settings don't actually need these other races and it just led to DnD being filled up with freakshit. I get so fricking sick and tired of DMing for people and they want to play a tiefling. Like, that's a literal fricking demonspawn. Why the frick would that be tolerated in this starting village? You would be lynched on sight. No, you cannot play a gnoll, those are vicious cannibal savages. No, you cannot play a goliath, they live thousands of miles away, why the frick is one here?
      >b-b-b-but you have no imagination
Shut the FRICK up. I am so sick of these fricking twats who think le epic freakshit race = creativity. It doesn't. You're picking a race out of a book. Why don't you play a fricking HUMAN which is what you are statistically most likely to be in this world given demographics, and think of something to make your character exotic or interesting from there? Like holy frick frick off. At least in LOTR the races serve a narrative purpose. You just want to be a special snowflake homosexual.

Never played HeroQuest but I've heard of it. Runequest was also supposed to be good. I mostly play basic DnD now because it doesn't contain all these sõyisraelite races.

            Anonymous

NTA but HeroQuest was basically an introduction to D&D. It was a boardgame in which one player played as the Dungeon Master and the others picked from pre-selected heroes with their own statlines. It was much closer to modern games such as Descent, in which the players follow a campaign of missions exploring the gameboard, and the DM essentially just controls and rolls for the opponents. Very much so a boardgame, but it was one of the things that got me into D&D along with the introductory scenario in the 1st ed red book my friend had that his dad bought years prior.

Based. I don’t play dnd much but the last game or campaign or whatever they’re called I played in I told the DM I wanted to be a white human who used longswords. One guy wanted to be a dwarven automoton, one guy was a lizard man, one guy was a half giant. One guy wanted to be a snake/woman hybrid thing and he kept rolling to seduce random npcs. Dnd people need to be exterminated

This is somewhat of an overreaction, but I tend to agree. I like having an ensemble cast of heroes as much as the next guy, but there needs to be some kind of care taken to build a story and bring them together instead of having tieflings, half-orcs, and dragonborn all living in the same starting village. If you're DM'ing with friends that just want to play a tabletop version of Streets of Rage, that's fine. There's a place for that, and it can be good fun. But for me it sucks the fun out of it at times, when you're all building a narrative together and the rules and setting just allow for the stupidest, zany shit. I get it's what D&D has sort of devolved into, and it's part of the charm, but the most fun I have is when everyone gets together and discover other worlds and these creatures creep in slowly.

It's great when everyone actually DOES roleplay, you know? The hulking half-orc has to wear a hooded cloak as the party trudges along the main road to the pub, wary that at any moment the townsfolk could find out there's a monster among them. I've found that in situations like these the players tend to appreciate more attention given to their character even if negative. It makes them feel like they're actually playing, you know, a CHARACTER. Instead of a stat-sheet they exploit to get bigger numbers.

my friends and i always set our homebrew campaigns in middle earth, our dm was a huge tolkien nerd (ended up growing up to be a lit prof) and was very good at filling out locations and lore so we stuck with that and never did any of those homosexual demonspawn races, and the only time we ever went outside the elves/dwaves/men/halflings fare was the time we did an evil campaign where we were all orcs/goblins

      Dear Miss Hill,
I send you the enclosed impertinent contribution to my troubles. I do not know what the legal position is, I suppose that since one cannot claim property in inventing proper names, that there is no legal obstacle to this young ass publishing his sequel, if he could find any publisher, either respectable or disreputable, who would accept such tripe.

I have merely informed him that I have forwarded his letter and samples to you. I think that a suitable letter from Allen & Unwin might be more effective than one from me. I once had a similar proposal, couched in the most obsequious terms, from a young woman, and when I replied in the negative, I received a most vituperative letter.

Imagine me, a writer active on Twitter, with hardly any writing credentials except tumblr fanfic. I somehow land a lead writer gig on Rings of Power because I sold myself well.
To "push the boundaries" and "expand" Middle-earth, I decide all elves from now on are Asian. I'm talking specific pale Korean beauties. I will also introduce dark elves into Middle-earth, the Japanese gyaru (think Aika, a whole bunch Aikas).

How did this change come about? We're just going to pretend elves were always like that. No explanation.

Taking that quote alone and without any context is pure dishonesty. Here’s the full quote from the letter to Milton Waldman:

    >Do not laugh! But once upon a time (my crest has long since fallen) I had a mind to make a body of more or less connected legend, ranging from the large and cosmogonic, to the level of romantic fairy-story-the larger founded on the lesser in contact with the earth, the lesser drawing splendour from the vast backcloths – which I could dedicate simply to: to England; to my country. It should possess the tone and quality that I desired, somewhat cool and clear, be redolent of our 'air' (the clime and soil of the North West, meaning Britain and the hither parts of Europe: not Italy or the Aegean, still less the East), and, while possessing (if I could achieve it) the fair elusive beauty that some call Celtic (though it is rarely found in genuine ancient Celtic things), it should be 'high', purged of the gross, and fit for the more adult mind of a land long now steeped in poetry. I would draw some of the great tales in fullness, and leave many only placed in the scheme, and sketched. The cycles should be linked to a majestic whole, and yet leave scope for other minds and hands, wielding paint and music and drama. Absurd.

      That letter is super long

      >But an equally basic passion of mine ab initio was for myth (not allegory!) and for fairy-story, and above all for heroic legend on the brink of fairy-tale and history, of which there is far too little in the world (accessible to me) for my appetite. I was an undergraduate before thought and experience revealed to me that these were not divergent interests – opposite poles of science and romance – but integrally related. I am not 'learned'† in the matters of myth and fairy-story, however, for in such things (as far as known to me) I have always been seeking material, things of a certain tone and air, and not simple knowledge. Also – and here I hope I shall not sound absurd – I was from early days grieved by the poverty of my own beloved country: it had no stories of its own (bound up with its tongue and soil), not of the quality that I sought, and found (as an ingredient) in legends of other lands. There was Greek, and Celtic, and Romance, Germanic, Scandinavian, and Finnish (which greatly affected me); but nothing English, save impoverished chap-book stuff. Of course there was and is all the Arthurian world, but powerful as it is, it is imperfectly naturalized, associated with the soil of Britain but not with English; and does not replace what I felt to be missing. For one thing its 'faerie' is too lavish, and fantastical, incoherent and repetitive. For another and more important thing: it is involved in, and explicitly contains the Christian religion.

Preview for the upcoming EW edition
      Couple of quotes
      >"Numenor was one place that we were just laser-focused on saying, 'We need to get this right,'" explains co-showrunner JD Payne, who created the show with Patrick McKay. "It's never been seen before. People have some ideas of what elves look like or what dwarves look like and what those kingdoms might look like. But Númenor was, in some ways, a blank canvas."

      >"We were not interested in doing a show about the younger version of the same world you knew, where it's a little bit of a prequel," McKay explains. "We wanted to go way, way, way back and find a story that could exist on its own two feet. This was one that we felt hadn't been told on the level and the scale and with the depth that we felt it deserved."

    >new Lord of the Rings has women warriors in it
wow cool this is exactly what I want there's nothing that gets me more erect than a woman in realistic armor cutting off the heads of orcs and paynim
    >it also has lots of Black folk in it
this is where I start getting butthurt and start growling disgruntledly, but I suppose I can tolerate a few blackamoor pickaninnies as long as they aren't negrifying important established characters like Elendil or Feanor or Bandobras Took

if they start putting gays and trannies and communism and transparent complaints about Trump into it that's when I'm going to do something drastic (in minecraft)

      >negrifying important established characters like Elendil or Feanor
Negranor would be hilarious to see tbh. His only redeeming qualities are speech and craftsmanship skills.
      >inadvertently sucks all the life out of his mother causing her to wither and die
      >ends up falling for Melkor's slander
      >refuses to part with his treasure denying everyone the chance to revive the literal sources of light in the whole world
      >kills his own kinsmen - and is the first to do so
      >disrespects, abandons literal deities who would like nothing more than to nourish elves
      >takes a chunk of elves with him, places them under a terrible oath
      >betrays his own followers
      >causes more death among his own kin
      >charges in and dies like a tard
His misdeeds end up haunting Middle-Earth for thousands of years to come. Talented as he may have been, he owed most of it to his lineage and spent his life as an insufferable prick. Having him be a kang would make only too much sense.

no they will sell it as a great success no matter what
everyone is adapting the netflix model of viewership reporting

where in the past it was ~70% of the show or movie
      now its the first 2minutes

and when they self report they include figures i the range of
(amount of minutes of the show(sum of a given season)) x the number of views according to the netflix standard
and you get "minutes watched" in the hundred millions or billions

    >Elves are, by Mortal standards, extraordinarily good looking. In LotR, Faramir notes their reputation for being "wondrous fair." Legolas is "fair of face beyond the measure of men." The beauty of both Galadriel and of Arwen is mentioned repeatedly, and there are numerous other mentions of Elvish beauty throughout Tolkien's works. Elves as a group are often called "Fair Folk."

    >Elves are pale skinned. Most Elves have dark hair and grey or blue-grey eyes. The Vanyar, the least numerous of the three Kindreds of the Eldar, have blond hair and blue eyes.

Galadriel was described as an AMAZON which is specifically what Tolkien calls warrior woman type, Tolkien called Eowyn this at first and then changed it to say that Eowyn was just somebody capable of great feats in combat in times of crisis
What this means is that Eowyn is not a warrior woman at heart, yet Galadriel is or at least could be if she wanted to be

            Nice quads
Is this supposed to be agreeing or refuting me? I can't tell
Either way the mediocre Kingdom of Heaven movie basically did a much, much scaled down version of this trope with Eva Green's character who nominally worked with the moderates but only to consolidate her power and secure a kingdom following the succession

            >you have not seen wut i have seen!!!

You don't have to have a 6'4'' actress playing Galadriel when the film industry has been making Tom Cruise look leading man height for more than three decades. In fact, Morf scaled to Galadriel height would be packing much more muscle than a Debicki-like lanklet ever would.

Reminder that any talk about race in relation to Rings of Power is a deliberate distraction to cover this part up

How 'Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' got a major boost from J.J. Abrams and a 'GOT' producer

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power lands on Prime Video Friday, Sep. 2.

    By Josh Weiss

With great budget comes great responsibility, which ultimately landed on the shoulders of showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, a duo with a limited Hollywood track record that includes co-writing the screenplay for 2016's Star Trek Beyond. Luckily, that very project put them on the radar of producer J.J. Abrams, who apparently went to bat for them when Amazon was looking for its creative leads.

“We were a little bit of a dark horse. And Amazon talked to absolutely everybody — whoever had any idea for Lord of the Rings," McKay recalled to Vanity Fair.

“We were passionate about the material and had a take that matched Amazon’s appetites and ambition," added Payne. He continued: "We felt like hobbits. We felt like two very small people in a very big world who had just been entrusted with something that meant so much to so many different people."

The showrunners also had the benefit of relying on Bryan Cogman, a veteran writer and producer on HBO's Game of Thrones, who boarded The Rings of Power in an advisory capacity. Who better to guide Payne and McKay than someone with intimate knowledge of how mega-expensive fantasy shows come together? And when production finally got underway, director J.A. Bayona (A Monster Calls, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) was tapped to helm the first two episodes.

        >Even among the Eldar she was accounted beautiful, and her hair is held a marvel unmatched. It is golden like the hair of her father and of her foremother Indis, but richer and more radiant, for its gold is touched by some memory of the starlike silver of her mother; and the Eldar say that the light of the Two Trees, Laurelin and Telperion, has been snared in her tresses.

In current year she's a 7/10 human. This is a good thing!

            doesn't come close to her

Ya, she actually looks like a mystical creature.

She was a great casting. Strangely beautiful, regal, yet ominous and alien.

This new casting is just some random somewhat pretty girl.
