It's not. It wasn't well-liked among the die-hard Tolkien fans because it leaved a lot of things out (Tom Bombadil being the biggest one) and changed some of the characters (like some characters like Faramir were completely immune to the ring's powers).
The movies gained appreciation quickly among the die-hard fans, though.

I'll gladly spend time shitting on Jackson's trilogy. It completely missed the mark in so many ways, but Rings of Power will without a doubt be far worse; both as an adaptation and as a work of its own (if we're allowing adaptations to divorce from their source materials completely, which I think would be an insane mistake).
