Loser-core thread

>"Loser-core is a comicbook subgenre where it includes at least a millennial character or a bunch of characters who struggle with life, dead end jobs, drug abuse or housing problems. Stories often take place in big cities and have light comedy, drama or fantasy elements. But most of these stores often provide a social commentary as well. Loser-core is especially popular with young adults as it allows them to relate themselves with the characters and their plights which sometimes hits too close to home."

Because mental health and mental illnesses are stigmatized as frick in almost every country, no matter how developed and far ahead they seem. Asian countries like Japan are very hierarchical and homogenous, they dislike anyone who stands out and is different / non conforming to societal norms. I'd actually storytime some of the arcs of Octopus Pie if I had the time. I posted the entirety of the epilogue comic over a year ago since it was only about 30 or so pages. I like the comic but even the author admits that there's not really an active fandom nor does she really want to cultivate one.

Also, anyone ended up playing Perfect Tides since it kinda falls under this genre and OP's comic artist was the one to create it.

There was an Occupy arc, since the comic was written during that period. However, it’s not a particularly political comic outside the recurring gag of the mom being obsessed with 9/11

How would Frankie fit in that trope? She's in her mid 20's, stuck at being a care taker in her family establishment where she's suffering from mobbing and has a terrible love life.

      Anonymous

I think she does fit into the trope, but there's less focus on her perspective and story since it's really the story of Mac and Bloo. She works a taxing, somewhat unfulfilling job, and is navigating that while trying to get a man and shit like that. However, we only get glimpses of that since her issues aren't the focus of the show and it only matters how Mac perceives her.

How the frick Octopus Pie is a variaton of Scott Pilgrim formula? One is a pure SoL while the other is a fighting/fantasy comic. Only thing they share in common is that they both include losers as protagonists.

        Anonymous

Doesn't Octopus Pie also have "light" sci-fi elements in the background, though? Near all these SoL comics targeted at a millennial demographic have a casual fantasy element added to it. I believe the term for it is "magic realism".

          Anonymous

I think Scott Pilgrim is way too invested in fantasy to be labelled as casual or magic realism.

            Anonymous

Maybe, but on the other hand no one comments on nor find anything strange about all the more fantastic events around them - people exploding into coins, the vegan guy's telekinesis, Nega Scott, etc.

You could make the case that these are all more of Scott's own delusions, but either way the Magic of the otherwise mundane setting is silently accepted as part of the world. Which is Magic Realism, which is the opposite of science fiction.

          >Doesn't Octopus Pie also have "light" sci-fi elements in the background, though? Near all these SoL comics targeted at a millennial demographic
This has been the case since the beginning man. I mean Peanuts is basically SoL but has an anthropomorphized dog in it. Love and Rockets wasn't just a name, originally the story had sci-fi elements that got phased out overtime. "SoL but there's a secret agent/robot/talking ___in the cast" is just a SoL comic staple.

Octopus Pie delved into some fantastical or absurd sitcomy elements like Scott Pilgrim but I think the big difference is that Scott Pilgrim "gamified" aspects of Scott's growing maturity and life while a comic like Octopus Pie was very much a sitcom up until the final half of the comic where it was very character driven.

Just "loser comics" already conveys all the info if understood as a genre honestly.

          Anonymous

I doubt that. Smiply labelling it as "loser comics" would be way too diverse. Loser-core is particularly about millennial young adults who are struggling in their small everyday world. It conveys a particular genre of comics where this is narrated in a semi humoric and a dramatic fashion. I mean it's not like they're actual losers but more like sympathetic underachievers who deserve for more.

I'd suggest millennial SoL for this particular genre. I think that would be a better labelling.

            Anonymous

I agree that Slice of Life is a better genre nomer.

Ghost World was good for this, Scott Pilgrim was a bit too fantastical to be part of the genre.

            Octopus Pie is great though.

            Anonymous

I think the best term would be 'Misfit'.
The character usually is not depicted as inferior or a deadbeat, but either due to a permanent string of bad luck or unusual aspirations/inability to blend into mainstream society has become a loser.

Btw, this trope is as old as time, the Noir detective is a typical example, as is BCS, as others have mentioned.

        Anonymous

Not that anon but I'd say that "Struggling", "Loser's Life", "Going Nowhere", "Losery" etc all kind of capture the feeling. I kind of agree with him too, it's a really boring modern trend to just tack "-core" onto the end of words instead of coming up with names for genres. It's not like they called Rock "Berry-core" or Metal "Loud-core" or Fantasy "Fantastic-core" or something dumb like that.

I think it has elements of it. I don't think they're totally losers or anything but I do think they have their own personal issues that makes them "losers" in small ways. Like, Eve and Park's breakup hinged on the fact that Eve's too much of a coward to leave what's comfortable and familiar while Park has aspirations to be something bigger than where he's at when the comic begins. Eve hated working at Olly's but she was too afraid to leave it until Olly basically made the decision for her. Also, she's an English graduate which automatically makes you a loser.

It's just another turn of the wheel. If you think everyone is going to suddenly wander around hunting each other for remaining resources like a bunch of feral cats then you've spent too long reading pseudo-expert fanfictions. Having land won't do shit since you'll probably be reliant on some part of our diesel powered, offshore factory society (fertilizer isn't much made in the USA). Also, being feral individuals to one another isn't how humans a special has every acted - people ban together to make shit more livable (like we've always done) either for the community or at least for their little band - either way that benefits individuals/families.

It's just that the idea of (young) adults being financially, academically, emotionally, and even geographically balanced is getting more and more distant and fantastic all the time, to the point it's becoming bordering on science fiction, like what robot maids or video phone calls were back in the day.

Comics can be more personal than cartoons

      I agree with that

funnily enough this conversation reminds me of this piece from Simon Hanselmann about dealing with television producers. Gives a lot more legitimacy to these more amateurishly produced comics when you realize that basically everything that makes it to the "big screen" has gone through multiple editors/producers, is likely being written by multiple people with completely different experiences from the creator, and is animated by people who don't even speak the same language. Comics and writing are THE medium for loser-core because nothing else allows for a competent, complete production of it with the hands of one person, everything else requires too much of a group effort for it to truly be the creation of a single person

It's definitely worth checking out if you've got the time. The whole comic is about 1000 pages but its broken down into smaller arcs that are pretty manageable. You can check out any of the first 30 chapters and it's pretty easy to keep up with since they're more like a sitcom. Later chapters focus far more on the characters growing up and developing as individuals, so it's a little harder to keep up without having read at least a bit of the comic.

Page 1 is the best place to start but if you want some suggestions, I'd definitely check out 05-10 for starters. After that, the comics story really starts kicking in.

Anyway, I hope you like it if you decide to check it out.

Anon accidentally makes a good point. Most modern SoL webcomics focus on women in their mid 20s and are written from a liberal perspective. We need to reinvigorate an old literary tradition and make webcomics about someone truly relatable: A middle class 20 something straight White man who saw a Ryan Gosling movie and decided to make it his entire personality.

How about SoL comics about former CIA operatives who have involved in south American contra operations and eventually gotten themselves involved with drug business and cartel? I'm tired of reading a bunch of college graduates whose only concern in life is paying bills and getting high.

I wanna make a loser comic. Not because I want to be popular, but because as someone who's been a loser all his life, I literally can't write anything else. Can't write about hanging out with friends or doing exciting things when I mostly just sit at home and hang out on Cinemaphile.

Write about the character you want to be

I still need to understand the character I want to be, at least somewhat, or else the series is gonna be disingenuous. Don't get me wrong I have plenty of charismatic outgoing characters. It's moreso that I mostly see them from an outside perspective than an interior one.

That's correct. Do research on extroverts and hobbies and other things, get into the mindset of competition and why people enjoy certain things, so you can write them more convincingly. It'll be a learning experience for you and your readers
