They used it for tension. They frick in Othersville. We get the flashforward to Jack and Kate off the island, and it’s clear that the baby is the source of tension in their relationship. We’re supposed to think that it’s Sawyer’s child with Kate conceived on the island. Only later is it revealed that it’s actually Aaron.

Good question.
The island is either magical or involving sufficiently advanced science as to be indistinguishable from magic. The electromagnetic core surrounded by exotic matter gives it unique space-time properties, which is what Dharma was primarily researching. Desmond’s exposure to this electromagnetism caused his time travel powers and ability to travel to the Flash-Sideways. The Flash-Sideways was created by Juliet’s detonation of the atomic bomb and is more of a shared collective consciousness state than an afterlife. The Island may just be a scientific anomaly given religious significance by the people who land there. It may actually have a will and magical powers. This is a key theme of the show and the island represents that.
Did the plane crash because the Island chose the survivors? Or was it caused by Desmond failing to press the button? Resolving questions like this defeat the purpose. Both answers work and are left to the viewer for speculation. Metaphysical questions about the nature of the Island and the Numbers are besides the point. They answered basically every question that needed to be answered when it came to the characters and the events on the Island from the Dharma Initiative to present day. Whether the answers are satisfying is up to you.
