I tried Lower Decks. I tried. I had a friend who kept shilling it to me. But, it's just constant "DUDE REMEMBER [insert Trek episode here]!!" with lots of swearing and toilet humor. It's a baby show that just happens to have some swearing. And all it does is make me wanna watch the shows it excessively references. I'd rather watch any of the pre-Kurtzman shows for the umpteenth time. I know I'll have a better experience.

Most adult animation is made by manchildren who take a thing from their childhood, and since they never grew up, their idea of making it more “adult” is adding swearing, gore, and sex. It's worth pointing out that TNG was very age-of-sail influenced and was often used as a platform for philosophical pondering or morality plays. Yes it had dumb episodes like Die Hard in space when no one had any better ideas, but at its best it was classic sci-fi: using a futuristic setting and the advances implied therein to ask questions about humanity and the world.
That's no longer the case. Now it's mostly influenced by memories of itself warped by cultural osmosis.

Star Trek: Lower Decks fits perfectly into Modern Hollywood’s toxic notions of feminism.
Nothing pisses off modern Hollywood writers more than an earnest portrayal of romantic love. It all stems from the toxic idea that a woman in a relationship with a man is “surrendering power,” so a female character craving love from a man is seen as backwards and obsolete.
This is also why Boimler and Mariner will never be allowed to be together. Modern Hollywood writers are obsessed with platonic friendships that fulfill every aspect of a romantic relationship except exclusivity and intimacy. Again, this is because the idea of a woman being tied down to a man for those things is seen as anti-feminist and backward.
The show is okay with portraying serious, long-term “lesbian” relationships, and various hook-ups with men as those do not challenge the writers’ preconceived notions of female empowerment. Promiscuity is empowering, women dating each other is empowering. Men and women being soulmates is not empowering.

I still don't get how a transporter can't work as a replicator for living matter, just feed it matter and have it beam out new copies of someone formed from the pattern in the buffer. Obviously there's all kinds of ethical concerns (and existential ones I guess) but from a purely technical standpoint I don't know why it wouldn't work. The incident that made Thomas Riker wasn't even on purpose and it still worked, surely that could be replicated on purpose to create copies of people. Fuck now that I'm thinking about it you could replicate Soong-style androids, the transporter disassembled and reassembled Data and his complex positron brain dozens of times, just have it replicate more Datas if you want more.
They absolutely dodged the actual ethical question by having T'Lyn accidentally merge all the Tuvixed crew into a big guilt-free meat blob. Probably not best to dwell on the fact that it means T'Lyn unintentionally committed several cases of manslaughter...
I do think the "make a teleporter clone," route is the closest thing you'll get to a "good" answer to the actual Tuvix dilemma, but it's not a completely neat solution ethically since the clones of the original/Tuvix are arguably still deserving of personhood too. Usually cloning is not a defense for murder, after all.

This makes me wish there was a TNG episode where some mad scientist kept transporter-cloning people to colonize some shithole asteroid or something. The meat of the episode would be Picard trying to figure out what to do with all the 'new' people, are they legally distinct individuals? Do some of them want to stay, and others go? What safeguards can be made to prevent this sort of thing from happening again? How does it feel to BE a transporter clone? What if you're a transporter clone and your original gets killed off in act II of the episode? How do two clones interact with one another, and with their original? What are the various reactions of the crew to this dilemma, how do they argue their points of view?

I saw the episode. Not my favorite, but I liked it. I'm glad we didn't see that ship killer, I'm getting a vibe it's going to a whole thing. I thought the episode was going to be about the captain realizing she needed an engineer and learning a lesson but just feels like it was breezed over.

But this also meant that Mikey had to keep his promise, and he conjured up this Jenny plot for the finale. And that’s how we ended up in this mess.
