That film failed because it was already on Disney+ before its theatrical run. Worse Pixar movies have made more money.

Probably didn't help that Turning Red was a movie that was essentially relying on being ragebait (already a pretty bad business strategy) to sell tickets and then having the release coincide with the Russian invasion of Ukraine (which literally kicked it off the front-page of every newspaper on the planet).

All-in-all, like Lightyear, it was a movie that didn't really need to exist and either should not have been made or been produced on a vastly lower budget so anything short of being a summer blockbuster wouldn't automatically condemn it being a box office failure.

Man. Riley was really cute in this movie. I noticed it way more than the last one. The environments and backgrounds were also improved. The new emotions (Nostalgia, Ennui, Envy, Anxiety, Embarrassment) retconning the 5 core emotions was annoying, but I got used to it. It's a little weird that Hockey had such a major focus, but seeing Riley body slam the DEI characters was great.

Turning Red was a better film too on almost every metric.
Looked better visually, had a lot more visual interest and detail in the setting. The human characters looked more appealing design-wise.
    Better color design, lighting.
    Better score.
Better or more fun acting in terms of the main characters.
A lot of the staging and shots in Turning Red were more interesting too.
    Had better action scenes.
Story was better too, it could get obnoxious but was a lot less on-the-nose or bland with its messaging.

It actually feels jarring looking at Turning Red and Inside Out 2 side by side. It just looks like an immediate downgrade. Inside Out 2 feels a lot more safe I guess, so it looks more bland as a result.

It’s weird seeing a concept like anxiety become a mainstream character sort of thing. I’m not sure how to feel about it. Seeing the kid’s bedtime book say how anxiety starts “spiraling”, the anxiety plushie with the shaking-with-fear feature, etc. It’s strange. I’ve spiraled, I’ve shaken with fear, but it’s nothing I would want to put in a storybook or give a plushie. It’s like they picked me (or anyone with anxiety) up, without permission, and brandished us towards a crowd saying “look, look, look!” Like my inner faults and miswirings have now been shared with the world in a way I don’t like. But this also might just be my paranoia issues talking.

No you're right. It's bizarre seeing anxiety being commoditized like this.
