It doesn't get any better later into the story, I finished season 1 recently and it's just more of the same, the characters are just there for fighting, they have no agency, motivations, dreams or anything but some weird gimmicks and then inner dialogue during the fight scenes

Nah, JJK is pretty good in comparison to the shit we have now, but Gojo as a character is indeed quite bad.
Shibuya Incident is one of the best arcs in the history of mangas, and one of the reasons why is the absence of Gojo for most of it.
Having that said, I did not like his flashback thingy in the manga, but found it lovely in the anime.
