I've been rewatching Adventure Time and I just think that somewhere between early and middle AT Marceline got "defanged" somewhat. I'm a little disappointed by the loss of her blatant delinquency, but more than that it feels she had a significant amount of character development offscreen that I didn't get to see, and it extends to her genderswap too (albeit more excused since that universe was reset into normie world). Anyone else feel like this?
season 1 marceline is peak
Yes, she lost her edge.
That's why the evil Marceline in Fionna and Cake was better than the mainline Marceline had been in about a decade.
Evil Marceline barely had any characterization, you just have a fetish for evil women.
I mean, considering the problem with AT Marceline was too much characterization over the course of a show that ran too long for the original interpretation to keep up with...
What specific characterization? It's the opposite if anything. She was reduced from a multi layered character with principles, albeit chaotic ones to one dimensional, single-minded moppy lesbian retard that exists only to further wank bubblegum and be her plus one. She even lost all of her sass, wildness and sarcasm. No, being stiff, grumpy, boring and dependant guard dog with deadpan expression is not exactly the peak of """maturity""".
Facts
She went from a mysterious amoral older sister type into an angsty little cinnamon bun for Peebs to help grow. Just compare a song like this to Everything Stays, would think they were from two completely different characters.
i wish this was in the game instead of the finn song now. or maybe it was and i forgot about it, idk, but i remember playing through the game like 3-4 times because it'd get slightly harder with each playthrough
Seems it's in the 3ds version, albeit really compressed and easily drowned oyt by the battle itself.
I also don't understand why a punk rock anarchist type would be in a relationship with a fascist dictator, blah blah moral code notwithstanding.
Never heard this before. I remember seeing the game announced a looong time ago. I've always said that marceline felt completely different in the early seasons, and was a lot cooler. I'm glad this thread exists, I feel heard. Can you tell me more about this game song?
NTA but there's no real context for this song. It's just music that plays in Marceline's boss fight in the 3DS version of the game. I actually think this song of all things makes more sense to direct at PB than Finn because of all the anger conveyed in it. I always imagined that as the song accompanying their initial violent breakup. Then Obsidian came and did that in a lamer and gayer way.
everyone does
hence why i've seen evicted, henchman, it came from the nightosphere, go with me, heat signature, memory of a memory, what was missing, marceline's closet, return to the nightosphere, and daddy's little monster upwards of 10+ times and stakes/obsidian only once.
i do like princess day and ketchup though, bite me.
What Was Missing and I Remember You permanently altered her character
Yeah pretty much, she became a really sappy conduit for Simon and Peebles and whatever moody issues she apparently has. PB had this to a certian extent where her ditziness and handwaving was turned into sorts of morbid curiosity and major vigilance
I think Simon/IK's arc turning into what it was kind of ruins him as a character and subsequently Marceline as a result. I always took Ice King as a tragic, cautionary tale and him coming back to Simon due to the writer's fixation on him kind of ruins it. He just gets a second chance at life and gets to find his magical wife, which is funny considering how Finn ended up getting 180'd into the mirror image of Ice King for a time (arguably worse) and his character never really recovered from that since all the female characters started to slowly distance themselves from him. I never understood the point of that other than shoehorning Bubbline since Finn and Marceline had a lot of chemistry the first few seasons.
At least you're honest that you're a loser but introverted =/= loser =/= attainable to you. lol
I’d say It Came From the Nightosphere did it first with it introducing her daddy issues.
i still think these episodes are good by themselves, even if they marked a change for the worse, at the time it was nice to get a little more depth to marceline's character.
it was probably on DS then, i didn't get a DS till the 3DS was already out and didn't get a 3DS until a few years after that.
Good
I actually kinda like introverted gloomy Marceline because that makes her seem less unattainable for a loser like myself
Like she's become more chill, understanding and down-to-earth
Are you also into Ramona Flowers by any chance?
She basically stops interacting with Finn completely after S4, some guy went through every episode and the amount of times they have their chummy scenes drops off sharply after S4
It's because they worked too well together and the Bubbline ship was already retconned from a former friendship turned frenemies into toxic exes on a fast track to getting back together because muh toxic yuri
Hey, weirdly enough the quality dropped off after that point too!
I still don't get why they decided to make her half demon too. Like, Vampire Queen, that's enough right there. But to add demon on top of that? It's just muddling the character's basic concept. And this is just personal opinion here, but when you start adding demon into the mix it feels like that should take priority as a character's main "thing" over something as comparatively mundane as vampirism.
wait, so you're trying to say hunson wasn't vampire satan? he ate fries with ketchup, and probably a lot of it. he also sucks souls, like a vampire sucks blood, and hell is red like blood cause marcy likes red things. dude, read a book.
No, Marceline was some kind of Antichrist who got turned into a vampire later. I know, it's dumb as hell.
okay you win this one i do remember that being a part of stakes now but like that was late AT which actively goes against much of the established canon of the early seasons, and i am an early season lover so i would take anything from those as canon over stuff that came after.
I'm fairly certain the whole demon thing was established as early as season 4.
Vampires are cooler than demons. Vampires have a recognizable aesthetic and traits, demons can be whatever.
Vampires can also be all over the place. The only trait they have 99% of the time is blood drinking, and I shit you not, the Japanese have invented vampires that don't even need sustenance.
I agree with you fundamentally, but it's not too big of a leap from Dracula in the novel he originated from. Dracula was both a vampire and a black magician taught by the Devil himself. Most of the supernatural powers you associate with vampires were most likely actually intended to be dark powers passed on to Dracula from Satan, rather than abilities vampires innately possess.
No.
Did you prefer Marceline or Marshall Lee?
Star.
good choice!
Iceline
your not the only one op. Personally I blame Rebecca Sugar for making her cringe fan fiction canon
She certainly did fall off hard, so did PB to an extent and i think the issue lies mostly in the fact that show seemingly couldn't write romance without devolving the characters to simple "angsty exes" archetypes. If they naturally showed PB and Marcy's relationship healing as PB went from being always on edge around her to being annoyed and then to finding Marcy's teasing endearing and Marceline herself slowly tunes down the teasing from dragging Finn into their drama to inside jokes it would have made the whole thing easier to swallow and actually engaging.
it was all downhill once her clothes changed the first time
I wanna be Marceline's pet
Punk Marcy best Marcy
She became a raging dyke, and thus since no LGBTQBRAAP+ representative may behave in any way negative or else we shall be reminded of marital abuse statistics among female same-sex relationships, the writers could not have Marceline behave in any way other than superb and swell and perfect in every way.
She is quite literally not a raging dyke.
Be that as it may, the writers believe it to be so.
Yeah.
She's a happy dyke.
I need pictures! Pictures of Star Marceline! Specially in her Purple Outfit
Here you go anon
They made her the drama dump character. Having a complicated character isn't bad but it consumed her to the point that she was hardly even recognizable as the same character from the early seasons. It didn't feel like character development as much as it did character drift. What they wanted the character to be about later was different from what she's about early on. Also, they had to make her nice and docile for PB. It's the only way such a relationship could even work.
